  1. Yep, if multiplayer mission designers include Tomcats and AIM-54s, they will have to really be careful with AWACS placement.
  2. LOL I wonder if Cobra's saying "Oh crap they found that picture I used!" Pretty much the only thing up for discussion anymore on at least one of the planes in development is what version of Tomcat we're getting.
  3. I believe WWII news is getting rolled into news for the entire range of DCS products, so unfortunately we likely won't hear anything until the next newsletter comes out (assuming there is anything to report). Last thing I remember hearing was that they were starting to turn to the Spitfire while they fine-tune the 190 and 109.
  4. I don't see how it won't be one, but I certainly hope so and not just because I really want an F-14. If anything but a Tomcat is announced the LN forum will look like the final prison battle from The Walking Dead. This community is...enthusiastic.
  5. If you can currently run DCS on high with 60fps I think you should be fine with what you have for DCS World 2. A good idea would be to take a look at the specs Wags has for his computer in his profile sig and compare your current gear to that. I'm assuming he's recorded his vids on his own computer while running the alpha and it seems to run just fine with what he has.
  6. Back when Rudel was doing the streaming prior to MiG-21 release, didn't someone point out that he had a DCS style icon on his desktop that had an A6M or other such Japanese plane on the icon? If my memory hasn't failed me on that, with that and the flag in the teaser I'd say some type of WWII Japanese fighter as one of the three is a given. Since Japanese fighters have never been my forte I had to pull this off Wikipedia. If LN is continuing with the trend of very late war fighters they could always make a very late war Zero assuming they can get enough info for it: A6M6c Type 0 Model 53c This was similar to the A6M5c, but with self-sealing wing tanks and a Nakajima Sakae 31a engine featuring water-methanol engine boost. Granted this may not have been a common opponent to face in the PTO, but then none of the German aircraft we have were a common opponent in the ETO from what I hear. Even if the LN Zero is a mid-war variant, if they are making a Corsair then I don't think it would be a massive issue. Not to mention VEAO is making a P-40, so I think we could end up sticking with PTO aircraft that are of similar performance. Obviously some would take it up against the Dora/K4/P-51D but that would be their choice/problem.
  7. You are correct I had forgotten that BST has the distinction of being a partner. Whether this gives BST more tools/support than LN we don't know, not to mention many of their products are in beta release (not a bash on them). So probably poor example for me to compare them to LN's potential future progress. Don't get me wrong - if LN:Next turns out to be an F-14 I'm not expecting it to come out in 2015 (unless Cobra says otherwise, and I doubt he would paint himself into a corner stating it on the forums). I'm going with at least a two year expectation on it. I think that if any 3rd party could produce a quality F-14 sim in less than four years it'd be Leatherneck.
  8. I don't know what kind of timeline we're looking at (only LN knows this) and you could be right on the 4 years estimate, but I wouldn't count LN out on producing a good F-14 sim faster than that. Assuming of course if LN:Next even is an F-14. At the moment I know of only one DCS 3rd party that announced a DCS F-14 module, and they have yet to produce any of their other announced modules for DCS. So already LN has left them in the dust when they produced the MiG-21. If Belsimtek is any example, once a third party learns to code in DCS they seem to be able to turn out modules fairly quickly. Not trying to bash that other 3rd party though, not only have they had unfortunate setbacks that have caused them issues, but their primary focus is on FSX and not DCS.
  9. The hinting has been very unsubtle when it comes to the F-14 being one of the three next modules. I don't figure Cobra for a masochist so I don't think he'd willingly invite the pitchforks by doing that. I could be wrong though, he could be into that sort of thing. There might be a gimp in his basement. Cobra is there a gimp in your basement?
  10. They probably want to hold off the pitchforks and torches for as long as possible, this being the ED forums and all. I'm hoping one of the three is an F-14, simply because you guys are scaring me about what would happen if Cobra announces anything but a Tomcat at this point lol.
  11. I've seen that happen on the range before, she had a squib load and didn't realize it. If you hear a pop but no recoil, the weapon fails to cycle (in a semi/full auto) but there is a spent casing, then you need to do a barrel check. That's why she has to cycle it by hand, it didn't jam it was that a bullet lodged in the barrel and no gas made it back to re-cock the gun. I saw a guy make that mistake with a stamped metal WASR, the receiver looked a bit like an inflated balloon afterwards. Cutout of a rather nasty squib example. I'm going to guess this was a competition speed shooter and cycled too fast before he realized what was happening. Either that or he was a crayon eater.
  12. Interesting, will definitely have to take a look at the beta and hop into all the vehicles that are controllable.
  13. Yeah gotta agree with cichlidfan, if you're thinking it means a lovely 3D cockpit I wouldn't get your hopes up. I got a bit happy reading that as well, but unless someone who has downloaded the beta says otherwise, I'm not going to get my hopes smashed by assuming that driver cockpit means what we want it to mean. Might just mean being able to hop between two positions, the difference only being the HUD display and what commands you can use. Though if that is all it is, that certainly could suggest multi-crew support might not just be a aircraft thing in the future.
  14. Thanks ED, happy to see a date named. Definitely okay with the delay, not like I'd have time to look her over during the Thanksgiving holiday anyway. Now if I can pick up a better simpit setup maybe I can actually get back to flying in DCS more than brief training flights.
  15. Really only have moments from two real life experiences, most of my "oh sh*t" moments in DCS pretty much ended in a fireball. Only one DCS moment really stands out right now, was the time I setup a head-to-head with my P-51 and the AI 190. Had zoomed in too far on the mission editor and didn't realize that what I thought was 100 ft away was actually about 5-10 ft head-on. I hit the fly button to start the sim and was greeted instantly by a loud BANG through my headset that made me jolt as the 190 struck me with his wing. I managed to land without engine and gear (though not without shearing a few pieces off, but walked away) but the 190 was not so lucky. Recorded it but never got around to uploading it. My two real life moments weren't anything as serious as what happened to outlaw (glad you and your instructor walked away from that). I was a student pilot in high school and flew a Cessna 152. I imagine I looked rather comical in it since even in HS I was a tall guy (my instructor would joke that at least I had an armrest for the throttle as my legs were shoved up against the instrument panel). My instructor had some quirks that was for sure, such as yanking the throttle to idle at bad times to teach me to quit taking my hand off the throttle. During one flight he had me land at a grass field. I was used to a runway that DC-10s took off from so this really tiny strip felt like asking me to land on a carrier at night. At the very start of the runway was woods and at the very end was more woods and power lines marked with large orange balls. I didn't much care for getting close to the trees, so I would stay high and then do a dive bomber approach to land once I passed them. My instructor said he could see I was "tree shy" and that he was going to show me just how close I could come to them without hitting them. We take off and as he comes in for a landing I look down through the trees and start getting a bit worried. I immediately hear WAPWAPWAPWAP against the landing gear and scraping that continues down the belly of the plane all the way to the tail. Without a word I turn and stare at my instructor. He doesn't look at me, just laughs and says "Well that was a bit too close but you get the point". We checked the plane to be sure there wasn't any damage before taking off again. Needless to say he did not cure my "tree shyness" that day. The second incident I didn't find out about until I landed and we were filling out my logbook for the day (think this was a month or two after the tree incident). Two guys who had just landed (think some Piper model) had walked into the break room and said "Hey you guys flew the Cessna that landed a little while ago?" As we had been the only Cessna in the air at the time we said "Yeah that was probably us". They respond with "Sorry about flying over top of you that close, we didn't see you until we were right on top of you". Both my instructor and I give clueless glances at each other and my instructor says "Well... we didn't see you either. You sure it was us?" Them: "Aren't you the Cessna with the tail number blah blah?" Me: "Yeah that's us" Them: "Well that would be you we flew over" Instructor: "We had no idea" So basically we had someone accidentally buzz over top of us and never even saw them, glad they at least saw us eventually.
  16. I can see doing that in a 190 since you can roll back the canopy, but I don't see where using it outside the holster would work for the 109 unless you jettison the canopy completely. Granted there are small window ports (IIRC) in the 109 but I'd imagine they wouldn't allow much of a field of fire. Having it able to be fired in the holster through the port would be a very interesting feature though. I can't imagine there wouldn't be a way to plug it, just a matter of digging around and finding what specifically they used. Maybe something as simple as a wood stopper shoved in the pipe in the cockpit.
  17. :smilewink:True but that wasn't the entirety of that post. I very much agree with Buckeye that this current comment of yours doesn't rule out an F-14 anymore, but it seems pretty clear to me by your wording in that 6 month old post that "DCS: LN Next" wasn't going to be an F-4. But I shall cease messing with the marionette strings now, some still have hope for you to feed upon.
  18. The next project isn't an F-4, people really need to let it go already. Cobra's statement below also likely eliminates an F-14 as well since the RIO is the same issue that eliminated the F-4 as the next project. Except Cobra already said it isn't one flown by USMC and Hellcats were flown by USMC pilots in WWII. So our guesses of F-5, Harrier and Hellcat are wrong.
  19. Well it'll be a US Marine aircraft, and I guess we have a pick from the aircraft shown in these two lists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Leatherneck_Aviation_Museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_Aviation#Aircraft_.26_armaments I don't think it'll be a WWII aircraft since Cobra said they weren't leaving jets anytime soon, but who knows other than LN right now (and producing a WWII aircraft doesn't mean they are leaving jets). But I agree with Raven that there is a good chance of it being a Harrier if it is a jet. The other jet I would put forward would be the F-5E, as it is used by US Marines as an adversary in training (F-5 would also make a good compliment to the MiG-21).
  20. Welcome to the club amigo. Like others have said, you have to unlock the gear first. There is a switch in the cockpit in addition to the shortcut. Just don't do what I did first flight and start hitting random levers while trying to find it because you'll find something else instead.
  21. Definitely, and when posting the ones I did earlier it was intended to give an idea to any skin makers, I don't expect LN to produce all the different liveries we keep asking them to. I'm hoping someone does make that Egyptian "Crocodile face" skin from the Bezcl pack, whether player-made or LN made, as I'm looking forward to some middle east scenarios when ED releases their map.
  22. Wouldn't mind seeing these make it in. With the first one it would be nice to see a US and a Russian one.
  23. Silver beat me to it. That maneuver you did reminds me very much of that Egyptian MiG incident, so seems definitely possible for a MiG-21 to pull off that maneuver from your video in real life.
