  1. Comparison JA37/AJ37 Width (wingtips): 10,6 m/10,6 m Length: 16,4m/16,2m Weight empty: 9500kg/9500kg Max takeoff weight: 18600kg/20500kg Max weapons weight: 1700kg/3600kg Armamanent: Cannon (fixed), missiles/Cannon (pods), rockets, bombs, missiles Engine: Volvo Flygmotor RM8B/Volvo Flygmotor RM8A Power: 125 kN/117,6 kN Source: Flygplankort 1987 (FS/Undsäk)
  2. I am surprised no one has mentioned one reason as to why we might not see the JA 37. At least not a fully functioning one... At the time of the J 35 Sweden introduced STRIL 60 (a combat/tactical control system) which introduced "datalänk" (data link) for sending data between aircraft. I think the J 35 was the first fighter in the world to use a system like this. With the JA 37 "jaktlänk" (fighter link) was introduced in the 1980's with the same purpose. This system has since been developed for the JAS 39 into "flygplanslänk" (aircraft link). I think (not 100% sure though) that parts of the old "jaktlänk" system is still classifed since the latest system is based on it. A JA 37 would be pretty useless in-game if this wasn't simulated properly. This is mostly speculation on my part but it would make sense...
  3. Reminds me of a poster I had at my office when working for Volvo Aero: "The fastest SAAB - powered by Volvo".
  4. Well in modern times (after 1900) Sweden came close to being invaded twice. Both times by England! :poster_oops:
  5. A common misconception is to think about Sweden as being neutral. The Swedish standpoint has been to be neutral in wartime and to have a stance of non-alignment in peacetime. That means we could work closely with NATO (which we did...) eventhough we weren't a NATO member.
  6. I got mine from a friend who was a AJ37 pilot at the time. If you look around there are plenty for sale on numerous auction sites.
  7. Regarding the "not a realistic scenario": I did my military service in the Royal Swedish Marines on the northern sector of the Swedish Baltic coast during the last years of the Cold War. More than once did the Swedish airforce (using Viggens) chase nosy Soviet aircraft and ships away. They didn't fire but they DID intercept. All our training was aimed at keeping SSSR away from our borders. This is the official aircraft identification manual given to Royal Swedish Airforce pilots and I think the cover of the 1987 issue speaks for itself:
  8. I am also a happy MFG Crosswind user. Can't really understand how I managed without them. I also really can't understand how some armchair pilots don't find good rudder controls essential? Not just because you need toe brakes for a lot of the planes but because it is impossible to make coordinated turns without them. Of course a twist stick etc works but not using rudder input other than when taking off seems strange when flying the most advanced combat flight sim on the market.
  9. Glad you enjoyed them. I've seen that plane IRL and the guy who flies it the pics is from my home town. The thing that won't come through via the pictures is the sound it makes. Here is the link to the gallery I borrowed the pics from: http://www.e-pic.se/Aircraft/Aircraft-sorted-by-type/SAAB/SAAB-AJS-37-Viggen/
  10. I added a few items to your list.
  11. I love this plane but one thing worries me. DCS: Europe 1944 isn't even half finished yet. No map, no ground units (or at least not enough), no bombers, no transports, etc, etc. With that in mind it seems weird to introduce another scenario before the other one is ready. I know this isn't because of LNS but it would be cool if there was some sort of common direction. I really don't think DCS will benefit from another map waiting game... Still, I will buy the F4U and I will love flying it! :pilotfly:
  12. That wasn't entirely because of the plane though. USA restricted sales of the JT8D technology on which the RM8 engine was based. India (or at least Rajeev Ghandi) was interested in buying it but the US of A didn't allow it. You will also have to remember that Sweden's laws regarding sales of any weapon technology at the time severly limited the possibilites to sell the Viggen abroad. The Gripen story is totally different in that sense.
  13. Sorry if you saw an attack in my post. That wasn't my intention. I just think that your statement about Viggen not being noteworthy was wrong. At least from a technical standpoint.
  14. Each to his own I guess, but couldn't you please mention one other plane from the period that had STOL capabilities? Could you mention a plane using a onboard computer with integrated circuits before Viggen? Could you mention one plane that had a after-burning turbofan with a thrust reverser prior to Viggen? SAAB made a pretty special plane here just like they did with the 35 before it. It's OK not liking it but saying it's not noteworthy or even special is a bit over the top if you ask me...
  15. Ugly?!? :megalol: This is sheer aviation art!
  16. In case someone hasn't seen a Viggen cockpit here it is: http://www.4pisr.se/index.php?option=com_panodisplay&id=320
  17. I don't use it. That is why I find it annoying that it is ON by default. :)
  18. So you are basically saying: "leave the darn thing on and get better in the process"? :)
  19. Look for "Internal account balance" under the header "Payment system". Of course you will have to be logged in to see it. Even if a module isn't included in the bonus system you will find info about your current balance.
  20. @Yo-Yo: I had problems taking off in the K-4 when transiting to 2.0. Then I noticed that takeoff assistance was set to 100% by default. I remember this from when I first got it as well. As it is an assist, wouldn't it be better to have it off by default since it does more harm than good?
  21. You guys should contact the Arboga Robotmuseum: http://www.robotmuseum.se/Mappar/0T/index_t.html They have knowledge about systems used and a collection of robots.
  22. THAT and camera pods to do some serious aereol... I mean aerial recon would be a neat feature!
  23. You can have all three running as separate installs if you want to since they are installed in separate folders. DCS 2.0 Alpha DOES NOT include NTTR. You will have to purchase it and then install it into 2.0. Not sure if the MM supports the map yet (haven't tried since I installed it using the command prompt). And yes, the NTTR map only works in 2.0 and it is the only map that works in 2.0 since Caucasus isn't updated to the new terrain engine yet. Modules that you own are automatically activated in 2.0 (and 1.5) when you have them bound to your DCS account.
  24. Have you updated to the latest downloader? DCS didn't find it automatically for me so I ran it from the command line: In the /bin/ folder LShift + Right mouse click. Chose "Open command prompt here" (or something along those lines - I am on Swedish OS). Type: DCS_updater update and then hit Enter. I had some modules taking forever with the first updater but with the new one it was blazing fast. Perhaps that will be the case for NTTR as well.
