CH Fighterstick - does it play well with Black Shark?
DieHard replied to Morgy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi, I use 104th's Crunch's CH .map since BS1 that uses my Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals. I have not flown the Shark for a couple months but his profile was still working then. http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/index.php/files/file/131-dcs-blackshark/ He hasn't minded helping me when I PM'ed him within DCS in the past. The Pro Throttle's mini-stick needs a minimum 14 deadzone in both its X & Y axis to eliminate its annoying drift. For help with this, Bob Church at CH Hangar Forums helped me. I have had my CH Products gear for 5 years and still use very little dead-zone. Their controllers are really built well, but for $125 USA per each, they better be. I wore out a Logitech and then a Saitek controller in 2 years per each. Concerning the Pro Throttle, this "Franken Potato" variation by username Ghost is very tempting, I will probably do this one of these days. Ghost is somewhere at the top of the food chain concerning higher level thinking, for sure, especially as to the various ways he programs the controllers using the CH Control Manager . Does the Mi-8 Throttle Up / Down (RCtrl+Home or RCtrl+End) function similar as the Huey's Emergency Governor does for emergency power, increase rotor RPMs when needed? How much use does the Mi-8's Throttles get used during flight? Deciding the need to map buttons for this function.

I am learning the Mi-8 currently. In the DCS opening screen, "Instant Action" has a Cold Start mission sortie to work with. I wanted a night version of this mission to investigate how the various lighting systems function. So I played around with Cold Start day-time mission in the Mission Editor and figured out how to set it to start at 2300 hours. Then I added this modification to the Mi-8's QuickStart Missions listings. It functions just fine, no big deal. But I wanted to add this night-time version to the "Instant Action" menu. I have wondered how to do this for some time. I have been with DCS since the Warthog's first non-beta release. I had no idea how to do this. I did some searches in the DCS World directory without any luck. I did a search of this topic in this forum with no luck. Almost posted an inquiry here to ask how this is done. The last second before almost posting it, I looked again in the QuickStart folder in the DCS World sub-directory path and I saw the "quickstart.lua" file. I opened it with Notepad++ and there it was, the solution. I just copied the programming format by typing the necessary language and added the new mission. It works great. I am very newbie into the Mission Editor editing process and related infrastructure concerning things related to the subject.

I fly the Huey usually, the way I fly the Shark since BS1. I do not check the checkbox for the "Central Position Trimmer Mode" option under Special in Options. I don't use Peter P's workarounds. I position my Fighterstick where I want it, click the trimmer button, release it and let the Fighterstick go to its center within .5 seconds. In MP, using a 159th's server mission, trying to takeoff from a FARP in a high mountain pass at zero degrees Celsius with outer guns and rockets and a full tank of gas I could not takeoff very far and hardly any altitude except a few feet with the "Force Trim On" trimmer switch turned on, as to a typical cold start start-up. I had full engine and rotor RPMs. I landed it. The only change I made, I turned this switch off, which means I am now flying freehand cyclic. I had no problem taking off or flying the Huey except typical high altitude challenges of flying a helicopter up high and no luxury of having the trimmer functioning. Why is this? With the trimmer switch turned on, why the difficulty of gaining altitude?

(see Message #14) I just ran the training cold start session this morning. This training session does not follow the updated flight manual change since the initial beta. Where the Start Button used to be is now an idle stop detent button, titled, "Throttle Stop" (RWin + T). I have the throttle "Corrector" mapped to my CH Fighterstick's throttle wheel in Options: Axis Commands. But the Fighterstick's throttle wheel will not move the corrector to full right turn of the Corrector. I have to use the detent button pushed in and the "Page Down" key to get to the Corrector's pre-start setup. I was playing around on a MP 159th's server mission, where I landed in-country, and manually shut-down. On re-start-up, this is the only way I could initialize a manual cold start start-up in game other than the "Left Win + Home" keys start-up cheat. Maybe this procedure will help. I am currently reacquainting myself with the UH-1H the last few days having not flown her since its early beta. The last 2 months I have been learning how to use Combined Arms more effectively in MP. The 159th server allows Huey and Mi-8 to drop off various support battle equipment in transport drops is why I am re-learning the Huey, and still need to learn the Mi-8. I purchased the Mi-8 for $14 on a really good sale awhile ago and have never learned it, yet.

Just want to say, this mission is one of the best I have played in MP in some time. It is right there with Tyger's 74th and Moa's Stallturn stuff. It is great for CA and Huey and Mi-8 CA support sorties. Every time I play a new mission start time from 0:00 it is a new and varied game. Hat is off to the mission designer. Thanks

Should be able to utilize a reference point and create a custom snap view to a joystick / controller button. That is what I have done with the other DCSW modules in my livery. Do a forums search for custom snap views using my username.

(re: Message #1) I only used your clear glass mod and substituted yours for the original. It works great. Still works with the latest DCSW update as of today's date. I saved the original file in a My Documents stash, just in case. Thanks.

(re: Message #13) +1 Thanks

+1 The 159th's public server sometimes has some fun CA scenarios. For me, theirs is the best I have found lately.

Nice to know this, might come in handy some day when I build a new PC and purchase the Ka-50 World module, then. I waited to learn the Ka-50 until the English download version of BS1 came along on July 26, 2011, before my March 14, 2012 purchase of the BS2 Upgrade, way before World came out. I never had an issue as to what this thread topic is about, my Ka-50 is an English translated cockpit. I don't see separate Ka-50 language versions as a current purchase, well, things change. Thanks.

How to enable autopilot to follow heading mode
DieHard replied to erjdriver's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Learn how to fly using the Flight Director in freehand, not using the "R" Engage / Disengage Route Mode, fly to where you want to go. Eventually when you get battle damage and lose your 3-amigos autopilot, hydraulic damage and radar altimeter you will be forced to fly freehand without the luxury of even using the Flight Director if you want to RTB and get repaired. Using the targeting cursor and the Shkval TV screen, engage autopilot "R" will fly to wherever you put the targeting cursor, providing if you setup the K-041 targeting system correctly and specifically the Auto Turn On Target Mode push button so it lights up. You need to read the Ka-50 flight manual a little, fly a little bit what you are studying, go back read some more, fly a little bit more, etc. It took me about a year to fly her fairly well and another year to learn how to use the combat systems effectively. I am still learning! I taught myself, nobody helped me except a few questions on forums, what I researched in the forums archive and the DCS Ka-50 tutorials and third-party tutorials other guys have made; YouTube videos also help. For me, the Ka-50 is the hardest to learn aircraft DCSW has to date. About 95% of my sim flight time was/is in MP online. -
(re: Message #1) EMP or NEMP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_electromagnetic_pulse https://www.google.com/search?q=EMF+pulse&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=electromagnetic+pulse https://www.google.com/search?q=electromagnetic+pulse&ei=xrqBVcfuHsbYtQXx-IPwBg#q=nuclear+electromagnetic+pulse Is the Mig-21 lead lined or lead lined underwear at least? How are the electronic systems protected from EMP? What happens when an EMP hits Iron Man? The wikipedia reference does state that the older vacuum tube electronics has a better chance of survivability compared to the newer solid state systems.

Yep, not just the P-51...

Just thinking, this is a tough crowd (DCS) for a funny reason

(re: Message #1) I think you may have read this, as to exploring the jet's performance concerning outer envelope boundaries. It is referenced within Chuck's Mig-21bis Guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-uSpZROuEd3SlphQlItbWJLRm8/edit?pli=1 Did a search to Wikipedia for the US version YF-110, but this was the result: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-21 Google'd YF-110: https://www.google.com/search?q=YF-110&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4477th_Test_and_Evaluation_Squadron Yeah, let's jury-rig the Su-25's flare dispenser... http://aviationweek.com/blog/we-didn-t-know-what-90-percent-switches-did I am purely speculating, me not being an aerodynamics engineer or a flight systems modeler, but in DCSW using the Mig-21bis, forcing extreme maneuvers, will the flight model here allow extreme maneuvers without being restricted within its modeling? I can easily force flameout in a few particular experiments, no problem. But will forcing extreme AOA allow positive recovery results as discussed above in the readings and video? -

CH Hangar forums has a how-to to disassemble the Pro Pedals to R&R them. http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/index.php/files/file/317-ch-products-pro-pedals-disassembly-guide/ -
I bled them dry experimenting how they work within the Taxiing Training Session. The lower right panel shows a pressure gage. When the air pressure is at the low yellow limit, there is no longer air available for braking. I was parked on the ramp with the engines running at idle. Is definitely possible!

Unlock nosewheel for taxiing. Lock it for takeoff and landing. Do the Taxiing Training session that comes with the Mig-21bis module. Learn how to steer properly when taxiing. Map your controllers appropriately. Remember to UNLOCK the nosewheel after landing after releasing the drag chute. There is a pressure gage at the base of the stick that shows very nicely the action the rudder pedals work when applied compared to using the brakes only to see what is going on. Read the manual and Chuck's Guide. :) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-uSpZROuEd3d0NuYzJfbWFnblU/edit?pli=1

These issues and a whole lot more can be achieved using the programming features of the CH Products "CH Control Manager" in Mapped Mode if you so wish to do so. The process is quite intense as to the learning curve. The 104th Phoenix's "Crunch" (username) is one such individual that will steer you in the correct path to get on your way and at CH Hangar's forum, look up 531_Ghost (username) or Bob Church. Of course this is only unique to the CH Products controllers. http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/

What that means is the 3 "joystick" flap positions are assignable. I have 3 buttons on the backside of my CH Products Pro Throttle. Using CH Control Manager in Direct Mode I set one button for Landing Flaps Out (down), another button for Takeoff Flaps Out (down), and another button for Flaps In (up). The Flaps In button will raise the flaps all the way in or up in one continuous action whether the flaps are fully extended or just part way. I try to setup my CH controllers the same way for all my various DCSW sim aircraft so I do not go nuts relearning each aircraft as to muscle memory moves with my fingers and have some sense of uniformity. This assignable joystick action works great. I did not have to figure out what key combinations assignments that were not being utilized to define each action. All I did was directly assign a button to each. As a test I chose Instant Action: Takeoff , as I am just setting up my controllers and am not yet ready to figure out the cold start how-to. There is a Flaps Out light indicator to know if the flaps are out or in. Thanks for this thread to figure out this flaps issue. I wanted to see what others were doing, then it came to me how to setup the flaps 3-positions. I also have the option of assigning keyboard key sequence functions using programmable G-keys to my Logitech G510 keyboard. I purchased this keyboard for the 54 assignable buttons when I started out with DCS. This allows the joystick type controllers for me to be utilized for typical HOTAS.

I recently purchased the Mig-21. LAlt + b is "View Briefing On/Off" in all the DCS aircraft I have purchased. This non-existent situation for the Mig-21 still exists. Well, at least, a work-around fix as to Message #2. This does work out OK. I copy/pasted zaelu's line using Notepad++ and saving it, creating Line 328. The substitution to "LCtrl + b" works nicely in the SP mission "Quicksand" as a test. I changed zaelu's program line to the DCS standard of "LAlt + b" and tested it using the SP "Quicksand" mission, and in MP on the 104th Phoenix server; it works great. Thank you very much.

(re: Message #1) I recently purchased Mig-21 on half-price sale. Your guide is going to save me a lot of time concerning setup and the learning curve. I use CH Products controllers and have 54 programmable G-keys of my Logitech G510 keyboard. Thanks.
