P-47 Updates 2.5.6.53756 OB
SmirkingGerbil replied to SmirkingGerbil's topic in DCS: P-47 Thunderbolt
No sir, tooling along at 320 straight and level at sea level and docked Boost lever. 24 seconds in, you can see this. Started and flew level for a bit. Also at other level flight intervals easily over 300. -
IS this map Beta? Because this map runs as smooth as Caucasus with more detail and eye candy! I am getting higher frame rates on this map than any, never drop below 60 even in city areas. Gorgeous! Stunning! Just tooling around in my beloved P-47. Outstanding Ugra Media, I will be here all night probably.

bomb and tank panel missing textures
SmirkingGerbil replied to catchforusthefoxes's topic in Bugs and Problems
Yup, same, and (maybe just me??) Control bindings for Toggle Cover and Toggle Switches dropped from my config. All other bindings intact. FYI -
Koenigsberg and Lepzig class for the German assets would be nice also for action on the Channel and Normandy maps.

P-47 Updates 2.5.6.53756 OB
SmirkingGerbil replied to SmirkingGerbil's topic in DCS: P-47 Thunderbolt
+1 Good to know, thank you! -
Need some clarification on some of these, much appreciated: DCS P-47D Thunderbolt by ED Cylinder temperature fixed - this one is known, no questions. Gas temperature for turbine is constant regardless of magneto off or fuel cut-off - fixed - known, no questions. Aftercooler update - Is this the interior color of the Intercooler after cooler issue, they are green and should not be?? What is this update referring to? Changed position and cover's texture of the guns. Fixed collision model - self explanatory. Oil system update - is this the oil warmup issue that was reported? Fixed missing FFB shake - not clear what this is? Added landing light driven shak - not clear what this is? Reduced propellor disbalance effect magnitude - is this the visual bug of having one prop or damaged props and how they behave visually?? Thanks all, just wanting to make sure I know what to expect when I fire her up, and fly over the Syria Map!!! Wooo hoooo!!!

How much hard disk space does dcs syria map require?
SmirkingGerbil replied to huchanronaa's topic in DCS: Syria Map
SSD drives have gotten really cheap, even the stick based ones. I literally have SSD drives taped to the inside of my case with Duct Tape they are so small and light. I think I have like 4 1+ Terabyte drives now, DCS lives comfortably all on its own drive.:lol: -
2021 (and earlier) DCS Newsletter Discussion Thread
SmirkingGerbil replied to NineLine's topic in DCS 2.9
Missed that, thanks for pinning here, awesome awesome news, can't wait to cruise around in my Thunderbolt, and Thunderbolt II! -
Thanks for mentioning, my eyebrows raised, was afraid to say anything because statistics usually get ugly. All in the eye of the beholder as they say. But yeah, those interval numbers made me sit up and take notice.

After flying the P-47 for awhile, and admiring all the amazing detail. I noticed you cannot see the second bank of Piston Cylinders. When you take damage and the cowling is removed, you can see what looks like a structural plate between the first and second row of Cylinder Heads. Did some checking, and noticed on multiple pictures of the R2800 mounted in the P-47 you can see the offset interleaved second row of Cylinders. I did find some examples of a air flow baffle, or conformal heat shield that was between the first and second row, but it had cut-outs to allow the second row to get air and the cylinders, along with cooling fins were visible in the second row. Even in DCS the AI model of the A20 you can see the second row of cylinders. I know this is probably not high priority, and maybe the plate in DCS has to do with modeling engine performance. If there is time, if it is a feature that P-47's all had a visible second row, it would sure be nice to see them, as they are modeled in DCS and we are missing some visual detail from a superb model. Understand this is just "eye candy" and their are far more important things to do, or it might even be slated for later release. Just pointing out for reference. A beautiful model, fully enjoying, a request only.

Navy, I was watching this unfold, and to echo the others the first thing that caught my eye was the System RAM: 8189 value. DCS just will not run reliably, especially newer maps like "The Channel" with only that much RAM. You might be able to pull off a simple mission with a Caucasus map mission, but I don't think there are any for the 47. Your Video card isn't even up to snuff. This is disheartening for sure to hear, but whomever tried to build this for you, should have consulted DCS forums or recommended builds before even helping you out. Of course if you purchased it two years ago, while the machine would have run DCS, it still wasn't quite up to snuff to really run it for all scenarios.

Hey sorry, was just a little swipe, same as Kaboom took at DCS, didn't mean to get you upset. I mean, we can all take a dig at a company at some point right??
-
Navy, There seem to be a couple possibilities. I am not familiar with your carrier, so I am guessing here. It sounds like you are being "metered" or hitting a policing policy for consumption. Or, your own cable/modem router has some policy on it, hard to say. I hate to guess at this point, but since you are stalled, restarting is your best option, but I cannot say how it will behave as I am only certain of behavior for Release or Beta patches. So my assumption is the module manager may function the same. Regardless, since it is stalled, you really don't have any other option.

Hope I didn't misinterpret something, I thought on your earlier post you mentioned 39 to 74 Mbs (as in Mega) bps, here you reference Kb (Kilobits), if you are actually burning Kb then yes, it could take days! Also for reference. MBs would mean Mega Bytes / second. Mbs (lower case b) would mean Mega Bits /second. Same for KB vs. Kb, Kilobytes vs. Kilobits. Bytes = 8 bits, so something downloading in KiloBytes would be downloading quicker than something in the same amount of KiloBits. 10KB down, would be quicker than 10kb down. Just in case, you may have known this. FYI

Glad to help. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with the GUI module installer so I am "assuming" it works like the updater utility that applies patches. I could be wrong insofar as if it will pick up where it left off. Also I use the command line utility to install modules, and they are small enough that they run pretty quick and I don't interrupt those. Regarding your speed, you should not be taking all night, even if you installed DCS World new, with those speeds at most factoring overhead etc. It should take more than 4 or 5 hours. So it would seem something is throttling you?? Just call me "Gerb", "Smirk" or anything, you don't have to go through the agony of typing out my full handle. :megalol: On other gaming platforms I also go by "Cognitive Dissonance" so "Cog" works too!

DCS downloads will check, and pick up where you left off. It may have to refresh some files, but it won't start from the beginning based on what it finds previously downloaded. As long as you are invoking the DCS updater (which it should run and check every-time you start Open Beta or Release), it will figure things out for you, and take care of it. For the module, I would stick with the OK to install. I use a different method from the command line, but we will hold off on that depending on what issues you run into. A way to get a rough estimate of your download speed would be to go to a speed test site like this one (after the download is stopped, finished or paused): https://www.speedtest.net We can figure out from there what we are up against.
-
Loaded question sir, as in my case I can download several files, terrains etc. that equal hundreds of gigabytes or 4 to 9 terabytes in less than an hour (minutes in cases), no more than 3 hours. What is your Internet connection speed?

Never mind those thermal runaway battery fires, and those pesky door handles that don't deploy on major accidents preventing folks from getting to you . . . especially when a Telsa is on fire.

Making DCS more accessible to new players.
SmirkingGerbil replied to Vertigo72's topic in New User Briefing Room
Random, thanks for the reference. To add to it, those 8 hours included a lot of flying with the default bindings. Most of the mapping done was to map Pitch, Boost, Cowling settings, Bomb drop toggle switches, Inter-Cooler, Oil Cooler, Dive Flaps and other often used controls. Even then it was me moving them around to make them more ergonomic. So plenty of flying in those 8 hours (= fun!) and experimenting with different HOTAS mappings to create an environment where I didn't touch the keyboard or use the mouse cursor to click a control. I think the only thing I use the keyboard for is landing gear, and the radio buttons A - D. The short of it being, it wasn't all drudgery and boring. Plenty of flying in there while I optimized bindings to my liking. Just want new users to understand I flew the P-47 out of the box, no binding changes other than I had to delete some dual mappings between the Thrustmaster Pedals and the Stick, which admittedly is kind of odd, not sure if that is a thing with other input devices. A couple visits to the control bindings and you figure it out pretty quick, and using the SEARCH function, which is a real boon in finding mappings and changing them. DCS has a lot of commonality with other sims, so control bindings shouldn't really be that tough, and even if you do have issues, just ask! -
Update on "Visual Damage model" bug For the Visual Damage model "bug" - if applicable. Experienced a new development this morning. Track file, and pics attached. Early in the mission sustained damage and was down to one prop blade visually. No change in performance or flight parameters, but this has been documented before. However, after I sustained yet more damage, cowling blown off, I reverted back to a 4 bladed, bent back damage visual. Again no impact to performance. I know the product is beta, and Damage Model is being worked on, this is just for reference for the developers if needed. Track file too big, if there is a link I can send it to, for developers will do. Adding YouTube Channel vid I captured in lieu of track file: Removed Vid - last few OB releases have greatly improved damage effects surrounding the prop, even get malfunctioning Curtis Electric Speed governor issues on damage now!! 10/02/2020 - this update post: 2.5.6.55363 Currently Running 2.5.6.55847

Good times, BF2 and BF1 (1942 also) - and your point is dead on. After awhile the titles were basically abandoned only to be overrun by bunny hopping hackers and cheaters. Sure you could still play it, if you liked getting spawn sniped and no one was left for organized play. The only examples of those games being supported long after the player base had moved on was Community mods like "Project Reality", as the developer had walked away from it long ago. To your point (as to why DCS is still strong) and others about "10 year old titles" that are still playable. Sure they are out there, but do you STILL play them, do they STILL have a enthusiastic community to interact with, are they STILL interesting enough that you have it installed and actively play it day in and day out? In this regard, DCS is hands down the longevity best bang for the buck king of this gaming genre. Really don't understand all the wailing and gnashing of teeth to get a significantly upgraded module and it might cost $60.00 or more. Even if I already own it.
-
Exactly. For clarity, of where I stand on the A-10CII Shut up and take my money. I have spent more on the Borderlands and Fallout Franchise for titles that wear thin and old within six months. I am still getting enjoyment out of modules I bought 6 or 7 years ago from ED. DCS is a steal when it comes to longevity and enjoyment for the initial investment.

Using TM HOTAS throttle and stick, control mappings from within DCS. Latest OB, so far Caucasus, Channel and Normandy, Trim for Elevator, Rudder, and Ailerons have worked fine for me on single player missions I am designing.

DCS: Me 262 Discussion (Development on hold currently)
SmirkingGerbil replied to NineLine's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Sorry, I was referencing my backer page when I initially replied, the 262, and all the other aircraft are options and have been for years since the kickstarter was taken over - not sure why your account differs, maybe you need to open a ticket?
