Why don't our warbirds cough and struggle on startup?
SmirkingGerbil replied to Nealius's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Even better, a good day to be wrong! Also, I love those factory fresh engine starts, nothing more harmonious than the R2800 firing cleanly every time. -
Why don't our warbirds cough and struggle on startup?
SmirkingGerbil replied to Nealius's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
My stumbling, awkward view on this, as I think you are right . . . but . . . Awhile back, Nineline poked fun at me (taken in stride) as I tongue in cheek requested that the new X-Ray damage model be applied to buildings and trees!!! He sent me a GIF of a PC catching on fire, which is accurate. Engines, especially WWII engines, modeled to take into account ambient temperature, humidity, ambient temps of engine fluids and fuels, to do things like condensation of fuel in manifold intake runners, varying venturi performance based on temps, fuel density etc. Leaky piston rings, varying cylinder compression based on wear and tear. Cold crank reaction based on cold oil, and weak batteries etc. would pretty much cause the same thing . . . your PC to catch on fire. While I too enjoy (and have routinely witnessed cold engine starts of all kinds) watching old cranks struggle and spit and sputter, I have a feeling the fluid dynamics, and all the other computational modeling that would have to be generated in real time to replicate this, would require a server farm capable of running at teraflops. Just my layman's guess as to why it would probably be far too difficult to implement. But I also ask for the X-ray damage system to be applied to trees . . . so there is that to consider. -
57 - However, will say I am heartened to see folks here in the 20 and 30's range, was worried that the hard core flight sim is going to fade. Game with my son often, do the Overwatch and Borderlands thing (huge fan of the Fallout series), but can't get him interested in DCS, hopefully in time.

Errrrhmmm. I hate to admit this. After reading the tutorials and FAQ's, many times. I finally stumbled here. I have been researching this for the last three days. Yes, I checked, and triple checked, read every post regarding no ATC feedback, borked my registration etc. Yes I read the part of the FAQ that reinstall is typically futile, but desperate times, call for desperate measures. Finally got it all back together, started at ground zero, and found this thread. A-10II here also. Have a Persian Gulf ME, cold start. changed Flight callsign to "Colt" - - - - Works perfectly. Can confirm, same issue as those before me have listed.

Why do we have to mess with port forwarding?
SmirkingGerbil replied to Nealius's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
You can Open/Forward ports by title or application on most firewalls, no need to be bound to an external IP. Even if your IP is NAT'd as long as you are defining ports to open (generically) on your firewall by application or via an internal LAN IP ( i.e., Internal LAN IP (server) >> ports opened >> any any IP) then the NAT will not affect you as long as you are doing this prior to the ISP's cable modem or box for your router attached prior to the Cable Modem or ISP box. I port forward services all the time without having to define a fixed external IP. Their currently is no shortage of IPv4 addresses, this was solved long ago with NAT/PAT. I currently peer several large edge/backbone routers on a corporate network with Dual Stacking (running IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously) and even after 15 years of the "shortage" I have no Cloud vendors, or remote customers taking advantage of my IPV6 addresses . . . zero. ISP's via IANA and other RFC based agencies have been reclaiming IPv4 Addresses for years, the practice you mention stopped many many years ago, you now need to provide proof, and design considerations for any block of IPv4 addresses you would like to use. -
Windows 95 was a breeze compared to Windows NT 3.51, the precursor to NT 4.0 All kidding aside, I think you are trying to pull it all in. I broke it down by each SOI has its own dedicated switches, and actions. I would work on when HUD was SOI, what did China Hat, TMS, Coolie, slew, DMS do for it - master that, then move on to the next thing. For instance TGP SOI - then deal only with what China HAT, TMS, DMS, Coolie, Boat switch did for it. I didn't try to worry about (initially) the flow of information between MFD, HUD, TGP, TAD, HUD - just focused on functionality of each SOI, in its own space. After awhile, the flow between systems starts to fall into place. Master one SOI, like MAV all by itself, using slew and target designation in simple environments, then work on TGP, target designation, tracking, lasing. Then work in integration of MAV SOI, and then TGP SOI working together.

A-10C Cold and Dark, 4 a.m. ish, full start Dubai
SmirkingGerbil replied to SmirkingGerbil's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Thank you! I know it isn't as exciting as gun runs, and combat, but I do really enjoy the process, and the environment of early morning starts. Relaxing. -
This post makes me all giggly and excited! This is also my place holder to come back and marvel at the time and dedication it took to learn and employ that tactic. When someone takes the time, to turn flight idiosyncrasies into an advantage, you know you are getting good info . . . especially when it mimics or closely mimics the real thing.

machine gun sounds [REPORTED]
SmirkingGerbil replied to catchforusthefoxes's topic in Bugs and Problems
Yay!!! Thank you! I missing my thundering hammering .50 cal music. pppppppppppppppppppffffffffffffffffffffffttttttttttt - is so . . . weak. -
Hot Starts Not sure about Campaigns, but a lot of the included missions, I edit them myself. Save them with a new name. I have done the same with other missions downloaded. Easy to bring up ME, modify aircraft to be cold and dark, save as "Cold Start XXX". That way you get the best of both.

Very! I will check, but I did not flip the chemical switches as you did, and the rockets fired properly. I did do everything else you showed in regards to rockets and bombs panel wise. I will check again in the -40, but I did several rocket runs last night using your procedure sans the chemical switch part. FYI
-
Ray - Thanks for letting me know, it is helpful! At least I know I am not missing anything. Much appreciated. Resorted to mouse clicks, and rockets working for the limited things I am doing. I set that rotary switch to "single", pop the toggle for "Ready" to arm everything, and leave the mode switch to "Rockets" - works as I would expect it to. If I mix a load of munitions, so far I will drop bombs after I shoot rockets, but will then take the time to twist the arming knobs rear of the seat port side, and they drop from the rails and boom as expected.

Su-30 accidentally shot down in training
SmirkingGerbil replied to VC's topic in Military and Aviation
https://www.sandboxx.us/blog/a-russian-fighter-just-shot-down-one-of-its-own-in-a-mock-dogfight-turned-real/ Another write up. -
Did you find a reference for mappings in Controls option menus? I am unsure which switch is for Bombs vs. Rockets release, and the toggle cover and switch for "Ready" Thanks!
-
Question Ray - Did you find updated information in this regard? The manual at the support DCS site is only for the -30 I spent an hour last night searching through functions and actions to map to my HOTAS, think I am close, but still no cigar. Is there another reference for new mappings for controls that is about somewhere??
-
Patch notes indicated manual updated, I have checked the manual from the Downloads section, and it is for the -30 only in regards to tanks and bombs. Am I missing something, was it posted elsewhere as a resource to show instructions differentiating -30 vs. -40 bomb arming, release, and more importantly all the new controls for Rockets!!!! Thanks,

A-10C Flight Performance Request to Fixed with DCS: A-10C II
SmirkingGerbil replied to Habu23's topic in Wishlist
For a layman such as myself, second graph means far more consistent performance (not necessarily speed) in handling, and less "nursing" the stick while riding just on the edge of a stall and hoping for the best?? -
Uhh I took the 9.99 as a wee bit of sass, to a obstreperous position regarding upgrade costs. This is legit? Lets be clear, this is the same cost as a 24 ounce cup of sugary Frap Crap at (rhymes with) FiveBucks. If you are too cheap to get an A-10CII for the cost of a cup of Frap, or a Bucket of Buttered Popcorn at a movie theater . . .
