Samsung EVO SSD's and Rapid Mode.
hansangb replied to Ntrospect's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There are a lot of good and valuable advice being given on the forum on a daily basis. Give it a shot a bit longer and you'll be able to separate wheat from chaff. Also, my comment about Catholics -> Islam was pointing out that some part of sim'ing is like religion. :D -
Wearing HP Reverb headset and HGU-55 helmet at the same time
hansangb replied to CptClownfish's topic in Virtual Reality
I take it you don't use a VR HMD now? I looked at some pictures of the helmet and it *might* fit. I think the biggest challenge would be the sides of your eye. It doesn't look like there's a lot of room. But it's hard to tell since I can't find a picture with a real person and the visor up. -
It's very common for folks to ditch the www. So I'm sure quite a few of us were trying wingwing.cn. But it doesn't run on port 80. If you type in http://www.winwing.cn it'll work. If want to forgo the www, you have to type winwing.cn:8282

Maybe, but I don't think so. I'll check later.

Answer is always the same. The most powerful GPU that fits your budget. There's a new AMD GPU coming in July (by all reports). So if nothing else, it may help drive down some of the GPU prices. But it *certainly* won't be a good choice for the next 5 years. I mean your 1050 is only 3 years old and you're looking for an upgrade. I don't know if any GPU is a "keeper" for 5 years unless you don't mind staying put DCS version and performance wise.

It doesn't on mine. It didn't do it with Pimax5K+ Either. I just start SteamVR manually, and everyone works. The Steam client GUI doesn't run. I never checked with Process Explorer, but it's probably hanging out in memory.
-
I keep mine about the same, but I'm going to play with it with Reverb.

Interestingly... we've had the VR Optimization since May
hansangb replied to Nagilem's topic in Virtual Reality
I can't see what remi wrote since he's on my blocked list. But as to your comment, remember, there was a time when ATi ruled the GPU market. I think most folks interested in performance will buy whatever card gives them the best experience. I know I am. So if you spend the time and effort to modify your game to support a bespoke solution, what happens if the GPU company changes direction or another company takes a commanding market lead? Efforts like vulkan make sense since it's a multi vendor consortium. I'm all for open and common standards. It allows for larger market penetration that single vendor solutions. For example, Digital, Intel, and Xerox never - on purpose- trademarked Ethernet. They also only charged $1,000 for a block of Ethernet MAC addresses. And the only reason they charged the $1K was to prevent every curios grad student from requesting blocks and blocks of addresses. During the same time, Token-Ring was being pitched by IBM. A few other vendors like Madge licensed it, but it was an IBM tech. When IBM celebrated shipping 1,000,000 TR cards, Ethernet was around 100,000,000 if memory serves. Maybe even 300K cards. So again, I don't begrudge ED for not supporting Nvidia only features. -

The benchmark is to see if there is a difference between the stable and the open beta. Do you get different FPS between the two? -
The in game Force IPD changes world scale and isn't the same as the distance between your pupils. If you change the settings, you'll see, "feel," the cockpit become larger/smaller.
-
You can switch between beta and stable, or you can download it as a separate game. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/ How to switch. The fourth episode was pretty good. Another active duty pilot coming forward was interesting. Even more so because he recognized the voices of the WSO on the those videos. And that there are 50+ aviators who saw the UFO's on the East coast.

Backup/Image Software Recommendations?
hansangb replied to Twwhitey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
True in most things. -
4K streaming was unthinkable a few years ago. Fusion 360? Google? SketchUp? There was a time Autocad and workstations RULED the world. Now someone with a browser can get most of the functionality. 3D rendering used to take Silicon Graphics, now I can do it on my desktop. I wouldn't bet against technology. there will come a day when haptic feedback and VR will be so good that the need for a physical HOTAS will be eliminated.

Upgraded to i9 9900K from i7 8700K and can see no difference in VR
hansangb replied to imacken's topic in Virtual Reality
Although 90 is buttery smooth, I got so used to CV1's 45FPS (with ASW) that it's fine as far as I'm concerned. The fact that I'm getting 90FPS at times with Reverb is just bonus points. -

On the PC Hardware thread, it gets discussed weekly. DCS today is bound by single core performance. So GHz is king (although incremental upgrade to 9900 helps). -
I was thinking the same thing. It's almost like the gov't is priming us.
-
I had no idea this existed. Thanks for posting.

In my OB (not the one that was released today, but the previous), using HP Reverb, it starts at 45FPS. But doesn't dip any lower. And as soon as i leave the ramp, it shoots up to 80-90 FPS.

I think it'll happen to PC gaming. DVD and Bluray is pretty much a done deal because of 4K streaming. I mean some still have killer home theater, they are probably streaming more than sticking bluray discs. But there will always be "purist" like myself that want to build it first. But for the majority? A simple hub that you plug into your home network and has all the HOTAS and away you go. Especially if they can get the latency worked out for VR. You wouldn't even need bulky monitors And my HP Reverb is almost as good as a monitor. And silky smooth. good times to be in flight sim'ing.

Backup/Image Software Recommendations?
hansangb replied to Twwhitey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
As good as local backup is for quick restores, recovering from an accidental delete (shift delete because I know what I'm doing.....d'oh I need that file back!) it's important to backup to the cloud as well. O365 family gives you 1TB per 5 family members and is a good deal. But I pay extra for google drive so i can backup every document/pictures on a weekly basis. Then i image the entire disk but i do that every two months or so. With fast Internet, it only takes about 4 hours to fully install from scratch anyway. But the files, the pictures *have* to be offsite just in case. My first disaster recovery exercise went like this. Show up at 7am for the kick off of DR. The office and local DC was padlocked. I was told to start the call tree to alert everyone. The problem? The call tree was in the office and the DC. D'OH. So don't forget to have an offsite copies of important files, boys and girls. -
Man, I wish i had the room for something like that!
