Oculus Rift S vs Regular Oculus
hansangb replied to mytai01's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Clearly, if you're not in the sweetspot for IPD, it doesn't look as good. There are a ton of people in the VR forum who are enamored with the upgrade of Rift S. I'm guessing you have a large IPD? -
I don't know if you'll be able to tell the difference between 1809 vs 1903 (with WMR fix). I don't know if it matters in terms of performance, *but* in 1809, you do have to crank up the SS% to 180'ish. It's much lower with 1093. On surface, it would make sense that less SS is easier. But I'm not 100% sure. I find that I have better luck if I download the Upgrade assistant and do the upgrade. You may want to give that a shot. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Good luck.

Absolutely not fair. You don't fly in sweltering heat, do you? You don't GLOC yourself, do you? Do you walk around the bird doing pre-flight in VR? You don't *DIE* if you mess up, right? I get that it's a sim and it's fantastic. BUT IT IS STILL A GAME. The OP has a point. Quitting seems a bit melodramatic, but I can feel the sense of frustration. And auto-save feature *should* have been there a long time ago. As is easier way to setup MULTIPLE configs to different birds.

WMR on Win 10 1903 allows in game windows of other apps
hansangb replied to ravenzino's topic in Virtual Reality
Huh. I never even opened the plastic on the controller. But Reverb in WMR portal is incredibly clear. So maybe it's time to give it a shot. I can use the diagram that I made while watching Lex's tutorials. -
Damn, that's a lot of research! But I'm sure folks would appreciate it.

No arguments from me. Rift has had a *long* head start and I stuck with them since DK1, DK2, and CV1. Vastly less tinkering required with Rift. P5K+ has potential, I do love the wider FoV, but I'm getting tired of messing with it. Reverb is in the middle. Much better clarity, a little more tinkering with smooth flight. If I could marry the wider FoV of P5K+ with the clarity of Reverb, and the smoothness of Rift....now we're talking! :D

Maybe it has to do with the incognito patch that helped some VR users and not most? I certainly noticed a bump when the patch (that we all thought didn't include VR optimization) helped my setup. Easy to notice if you use the same instant action to test the performance. Reverb worked beautifully out of the box. But I did strap it down with some wireties since the cable reminded me of the original Vive cable (not as bad, but close). So I strain relief'ed it. I stayed with Win 1809 because of the WMR bug that was present in 1903. When the WMR bug (that killed resolution) came out, I then upgraded to 1903. Reverb thus far as been very smooth experience. It actually reminds me of the Rift experience. Pimax 5K+ on the other hand isn't as smooth. So off to ebay it goes. I'll miss the wider FoV, but the stunning clarity of Reverb more than makes up for it.

located here: .....Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MixedRealityVRDriver\resources\settings And don't forget not everyone with 1903 has KB4507453 update. Looks like the latest update includes it, but when i did it two weeks or so ago, I had to manually update it.

Warning to All!!! F-18 warthog flight stick
hansangb replied to Jason S's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Good lord. The man has 19 posts and you guys jump all over him. So what exactly did he do, but warn others that they should take care in replacing the A10C joystick. And it's not exactly metal, is it. Almost all experience TM owners (like me) know that it's not metal. If it were, there wouldn't be shapeways store selling plastic and aluminum replacements. It's notoriously weak point and easy to shear off. He might have used the handle to help assisting the knurled ring, or it might have happened exactly the way he described it. Why the hate? Why jump on a newcomer who posted a cautionary tale? -
What product number or name did you use? My search didn't bring anything up. EDIT: Just saw the picture. It's printed on the HMD. I'll go look.

See this post I made: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2616874&postcount=799 Also, at the end, the CENTER is an arbitrary name. The syntax does change over time, so you may have to play with it. now that I'm a VR user, I tore down my 3 monitor + 2 USB monitor setup.

The patience of consumers these days of Instagram/twitter/snapchat world is mind boggling. Not every company is run by a 17 year old. But maybe I'm just showing my age of when it was the norm to hear nothing until something came out. The good news is that you can vote with your hard earned money or wait until reviews come in. That's worth the $100 discount - call it a safety tax or tax for hedging. I'm sure the reviews will come out within a month or so.

On the business side, yes I'm sure they will have a steep learning curve. But if the "We tried and failed, so we started again" lessons learned video is any indication. This is not at all like a failed kickstarter. I mean they do have a commercial business of making cockpits. It's easy to knock Chinese vendors since there are so many cheap knock-offs. But after the YT video of their failures, I voted with my $$$ and took a chance. We'll see. I took a chance on Oculus through DK1 and DK2, and with Reverb. And it's all paid off so far. Here's to hoping it continues.

LiveATC is a great app. I love listening to the cockpit whenever I fly United (although more and more, they don't have it on, and the Continental planes never had it to begin with). So I substitute it with LiveATC app. Fascinating stuff.

Yeah, the first two are pretty famous. The first one is easy enough to explain. That's what people of that age would have thought about "flying" or "soaring" That second one is a little more interesting because it's very out of place.

*any* SSD will be two orders of magnitude faster than your HD. If you have a SATA III slot open, which I imagine you will, you can use the $200 SSD. I seem to recall microcenter having for cheaper than that these days.

Time to clean the dust and waterblock
hansangb replied to BitMaster's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I only use AIO since I'm too lazy. But I would think boiled distilled water and some alcohol would be best. I guess not? And @Thick8, you're talking about the heatsink going into the washer, I'm guessing. -
Rift S left controller battery & 12 Gb update
hansangb replied to pappavis's topic in Virtual Reality
He liked it but the controllers apparently didn't recognize new batteries preventing him from using it. So he returned it for Vive Index. -
Yeah, I too had some issues. Games meant to run on MHz computers trying to deal with GHz. I do remember the F19 manual talking about the differences in radar and how to skirt around the different ones.

Problems with Windows 10 1809 update
hansangb replied to GeneralDynamics's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I don't believe DCS has enough IOPS for spectre/meltdown fixes to affect it. I saw zero difference before and after adding the hot fix. -
If you're showing 188%, I"m guessing your resolution bar in SteamVR shows 1440? Then you're going to need KB4507453. Also, you can turn down the PD in the game to 1.0. I set my SteamVR video setting to hit 2160 resolution. Before the KB fix, the supersampling was 188% (1440 * 188%). But after the KB fix, you'll see that the SS% will go way down.
-
After you setup the WMR/Reverb, check to see if the KB update is applicable. It might have said "not needed" because it didn't see the Reverb. Good luck. Also, if you open up SteamVR and your recommended resolution doesn't show 2160 (it shows 1440) you don't have the update. At least that was the case for me.

Those SDE pictures look weird to me. I don't know that I see them in mine. But I'll check tomorrow if my woodworking project wraps up. So the two things are 1) I can't believe USB card will eliminate SDE, and 2) You may just have gotten used to the softer/diffused O+ lens to even out the SDE. And, maybe you have a dud. But I'm going to to try really hard to see if I can see the SDE. It never bothered in me in CV1, so my brain may well be ignoring them.

Problems with Windows 10 1809 update
hansangb replied to GeneralDynamics's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You can always stick with 1803 until a patch or future update comes for 1903. I have the same CPU, but different GPU and have had no issues (other than the WMR issue for VR). -
Crazyave, if you like O+ better, by all means stick to it. You're not marginalizing anyone's experience at all. VR is personal, I've noticed. I didn't mind CV1's resolution or SDE as much as some people. I saw no difference between CV1 and the original Odyssey. Yet others saw a big improvement. So clearly age of your eyes matter! :D The low performance is odd though. But I don't recall what your HW spec is. In my setup, Reverb was the same if not better than CV1. It was very very smooth. *HOWEVER*, I didn't try the Rift after DCS released the optimization incognito. So it could very well be that CV1 is better than Reverb (not surprising, I don't think). I'm one of those that saw immediate improvement in VR with the update. I use the Persian Gulf, F18, Ready on the ramp (or something like that, it's the one where you start out parked next to other F18s on the airfield) missions. And like dburne, I saw an improvement in the Normandy, A10C, CAS instant mission. That one is a headscratcher. Anyway, enjoy your O+. If you like, it, that's all that matters.
