According to the update the model may have been changed to the 30 block instead of the proposed 28 block. I'm not sure if the was just a typo or what. It'll be interesting to see if they did indeed change it to the 30 block. It would make since as I believe the P-47D-30 was the single most produced block. It was also the first P-47 model to include "dive flaps."

Combined Development Update - November 1, 2013
Barrett_g replied to luthier1's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Love the update!!! Especially the P-47 stuff.... But I have a couple questions... The kickstarter campaign said the P-47 was going to be the "Republic P-47D-28 Thunderbolt." This update says it's going to be the P-47D-30.... I was just curious if this was a typo or did you guys decide to change it? Not a gripe... Just curious!!! -
I thought I read on their Facebook page that the F-15E was cancelled?

Not sure if this has been posted before... But it's a very good documentary with a lot of B-17 footage: http://youtu.be/mD7l2mQYlYQ

Another good one!

Awesome vids guys!!! Keep them coming! Here's a decent one about operations in Italy:

One of the things that stuck with me after watching that documentary was the radar controlled flak guns. I knew radar was a technology coming into its own towards the end of the war.... And I knew about the night fighters being developed with radar.... But I had no idea they had radar controlled flak guns. I like the pilots description of the radar controlled flak guns at 25:50. How the radar waves would bleed over into the pilot's radio headsets. I hope they develop this into the game. Instead of "lock on" tones it would be more of a static sound. I'm reading "Hell Hawks!" Right now. What makes this book even more impressive is reading it after reading "56th Fighter Group." In "56th Fighter Group" flying a Jug below 15,000 feet was described as almost a death sentence... I started reading "Hell Hawks!" And was astonished. Here these P-47's are, flying low over the hills... far below 15k... When they got jumped by FW-190's! I thought they were done for... But they were able to not only fend them off.. But usually win, and chase off the remaining planes. I think this has to do with the difference in P-47 models. The 56th FG flew P-47C's early in the war... As it was developed it fixed a lot of its shortcomings. Thankfully the P-47 in DCS WWII will be the P-47D-28. The "paddle prop" was standard on this model and it's climb rate was vastly improved over the older models.

One of my favorite P-47 documentaries: http://youtu.be/tTbMKVuijE8

I'll try to find data on this but I'm going to bet the Hellcat out scores the P-47 in the Pacific... The P-47 was just too limited due to its range. I also believe they flew more of an air-to-ground role. Case in point: P-47's launched from aircraft carriers to Saipan. They landed at the recently captured flight line there and began CAS missions in support of Marine operations. While P-47's were helping Marines fight tooth and nail across Saipan.. The Navy picked up large radar contacts and moved the carrier task force north to intercept.... The following battle was dubbed the "Marianna's Turkey Shoot." Hellcats scored in droves on that single air battle. I hate that the Turkey Shoot is sooo popular in History... It makes finding any details on P-47 activity during that time very hard. After some hard fought CAS missions, P-47's then aided in the capture of Tinian, where I believe they were the first to drop Napalm (at least in the Pacific... Not sure about Europe) Here's a good read... And about the only information I can find on P-47's during the Marianas campaign... Due to the over shadowing Turkey Shoot: http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eatdouble/%7E318thFighterGroup.Saipan.html

I think you're right.... I think the roll rate was surprising for how big the P-47 was... So it's more reletive.... But while searching I did find this document from when the RAF was testing an early model P-47: http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-47/p-47c-afdu.html It basically says the P-47's roll rate was: Comparable if not better than the Spit MK IX above 30k feet of altitude... Though the Spit had the edge down low. Far superior than the Typhoon IB Considerably better than the Mustang X The P-38F doesn't really go into roll rates... But the P-38F out maneuvered the P-47C. It's a pretty interesting read!

It's looking like it will be the free plane. It got the most votes on the poll they conducted here earlier as it had a wider landing gear that will help newbies land and take off... It also has a tougher engine that will help newbies survive longer. I'm fine with it being the free plane... Hopefully it'll open up people eyes and more people will come to love it for what it was capable of.

It had a higher service ceiling than any other allied fighter, faster top speed, and faster roll rate... Still trying to find the document that supported those figures.... But it read very much like the document I posted above... Most of the other fighters would jump out to an early lead... But once that turbo started pumping the P-47 would reel them in and leave them in the dust! It'll be fun getting high above the battlefield and diving in on unsuspecting victims!

The P-47 is my favorite WWII aircraft and the thing that I look forward to the most about DCS WWII. The problem with the P-47 is it always seems like it's over shadowed by the other planes... so I thought it would be cool to start a thread devoted strictly to the P-47. A place where P-47 fans can share facts and stories about this awesome plane. There's several documents on this site...but here's one that I found particularly interesting: www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-47/P-47_versus_FW-190.pdf Any other fans of the P-47 out there?

Three American, Three German, One British aircraft...
Barrett_g replied to Avimimus's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Which is the third American plane? I only heard about the P-51 and the P-47... You COULD say there are three British planes.... The Spitfire MkIX, the Thunderbolt MkII, and the Mustang MkIV.... But I see what you mean... They should have included a Tempest or a Typhoon instead of a third German plane... Or maybe even a Soviet plane... -
I think the ME-262 stretch goal should be changed to a Tempest or a Typhoon.... So you have 2 American planes, 2 German planes, and 2 British planes.... But that's another topic all together. As far as changing what you have now...You don't want to limit the initial release to only 1 free plane.... The last thing you want is a million P-47's scouring the online map for one poor bastard that paid for the FW-190. At the very least.... The initial release should be a pair. "P-47 vs ME-109." It'll keep the online matches fair as all these new players will supplement the already released P-51 and soon to be released FW-190. Consider the Spit and any other stretch-goal aircraft as a bonus for supporting.

They already have a g-induced black-out... Maybe they could make it to where when your oxygen system breaks you just have a prolonged black out that may or may not recede once you lose altitude and fly into more oxygenated air.
-
IL-2: 1946 has the ability to set gun convergence.... But I never messed with that stuff... I assumed default was good enough and learned how to fly and fight accordingly. I imagine I'll do the same when DCS: WWII comes out... Whether it has the ability or not.
-
I think the P-51D that was released was a fairly late war airplane too... So though the map may be a bit off... At least the airplanes are all fairly equal. To bad they didn't chose the P-47D-40. It had zero length rocket stubs... All the earlier P-47's had the bazooka tubes that weren't as accurate.
-
The P-47D-28 that they are modeling will be a bubbletop.... Hopefully they'll come out with a earlier Razorback model module for us later down the line!
-
The P-47's my favorite. It's ceiling was the highest... And it's weight made it dive like no other. It'll be interesting to see tactics come into play amongst dissimilar aircraft. If you can get a height advantage.... You should be able to boom and zoom. Dive in, hit them hard... And zoom climb back up to height.

How many of you regularly fly medium/heavy bombers?
Barrett_g replied to Geronimo989's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Modded IL-2: 1946 http://Www.sas1946.com -
I believe the P-47 and the P-51 used the same stick grip.... Though their throttles were different. I'd be down for the stick once DCS WWII comes out with the free P-47D-28!

The map needs to be enlarged before we have a B-17 anyways... Good idea!

Which aircraft are you most interested in?
Barrett_g replied to Griffin's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I have a book with this picture in it: The caption reads: How tough was the Thunderbolt? 2nd Lt. Karl Wallberg, a Ninth AF pilot, landed his P-47D with a 500-pound bomb hung under the wing. The bomb came off and promptly exploded, blowing off the rear of the Thunderbolt behind the armored seat. Lt. Wallberg was only shaken up. (USAFM) I hope we make the goal and this sim comes to fruition. I have no problems paying extra for a P-47D-15 (Razorback) either!!! -

I picked the P-47D-28.... Because 1)... I'm a huge Jug lover... And 2)... I think they need to keep it simple for the first few aircraft... Better to start out with several quick-release single engine fighters... Once they develop a base move on to a few twin engine planes and then finally... Once bigger maps are released a B-17 would be great. I really hope they have a sophisticated damage model worked out. They themselves described the T-bolt as a plane that could come home with cylinders knocked out... I hope this rings true... I wanna be able to make it home with pistons flopping about and engine panels blown off long after my P-51 friends have had to belly in because of a glycol leak! ;)
