shadows cars at Hoover Dam
Cykyrios replied to probaco's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
Would you happen to have flat shadows enabled? This would be a direct result of using this option. -
Speed does seem to play a crucial part in the damage you get from a collision with a tree: at very low speeds (hovering in a helicopter), you can "push" against a tree, and even "destroy" it, while clipping a leaf at 100+ knots will likely result in a fireball. It would be nice if the leaves could be more "transparent" to collision, or at least not destroy your aircraft instantly. In fact, leaves are so solid right now, you can land on top of trees!

Odd Transient When Flying Under Bridge
Cykyrios replied to Aeroscout's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
The same effect is easily noticeable with helicopters, as they are affected as long as they stay under the bridge. You can find a track for the Huey in this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=154325. I can definitely say this is NOT just some sort of turbulence, though, as I managed to turn the engine off and stay in the air... -
NTTR - Nevada Tree Testing Range... Am I the first to have done this? Wags said some time ago that trees would only have a cylinder (or box) collider for the trunk, but I learned the hard way this is not true (my first low pass flight over trees ended... badly), so I decided to investigate a bit :D
-
It's not really turbulence, it's the same kind of glitch you can already find in some hangars and oil rigs in 1.2 and 1.5. More details and a track here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=154325 Whether it's related to what is described here, however, I do not know.

The numerous questions of a fresh DCS noobie...
Cykyrios replied to IKROKODIL's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Welcome! :) I'll try and answer your questions the best I can: 1. During the last few years, Eagle Dynamics has been developing a substantial upgrade to the rendering engine (or a new one altogether). DCS 1.5 is an open beta version that uses this new engine (EDGE) and adds some new features. It was originally not supposed to exist, and we would've only had 2.0. 2.0 is, at this time, an open alpha with the purpose of testing the NTTR map that was released at the beginning of the week. Once all major bugs are fixed and missing features are added, 1.5 will be merged into 2.0, probably as a beta, and later on 1.2.16 will disappear and only 2.0 will remain. As for modules, 2.0 is "just an update" to DCS, so anything you buy now will still work in 2.0. However, your current hardware probably cannot run DCS 2.0, especially if your graphics card doesn't support DX11 (which is now mandatory). If you want to wait for something to buy modules, wait for sales! They should go up to 40% off and happen quite often. 2. It depends on your own preference, but you should know that modules bought on the ED store do NOT work on Steam, while buying modules on Steam allows you to play on the standalone version. 3. There should not be any difference (except for the slightly delayed updates on Steam). 4. Not sure what kind of advice you're looking for, but have fun and take your time learning the two free aircraft. 5. I know it's possible, and you can find examples with FreeTrack and FaceTrackNoIR; I haven't done so and don't even have TrackIR myself, though (but would really like to have either of these). -
Nice one! I decided to give it a try with the Mustang, managed to complete 4-5 laps before I clipped the outer fence and turned into a fireball...

I really didn't know how to call that... anyway. When passing beneath the bridge at Hoover Dam, the aircraft experiences some sort of ground effect/lift/fake ground, which disrupts its flight dynamics. This is most easily noticeable if you do so slowly with a helicopter (Huey in my case). You can watch the track I provided to see that if you "land" between the road and the arch, you can even shut the engine down, and the aircraft will stay in the air, drifting slowly and eventually fall down. I must add though, that this is not exclusive to the dam's bridge, as I had that happen with oil rigs and some hangars in DCS 1.2.16 and 1.5 as well (one such hangar can be found right next to Batumi airport). Please do show said effects :p (I'm unfortunately still stuck downloading, I'm probably still another day away from testing myself).

You forgot an important item from the list: "All this is subject to change and will be updated in time." More seriously, it was stated that the moving map was only on more recent versions of the Gazelle, so unless Polychop plan to add features from more recent versions, chances are we're not going to get a moving map. I personally wouldn't dislike said moving map, though :D

Although we have no real info about this, I believe it only means they're integrating the map into the T4 version, and the only "rework" will consist in making sure there are no bugs in the process, or adapting objects and textures (we've already witnessed a few of those issues, such as trees and other objects not blending properly). Just my guess, anyway, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high for this. Nevada is coming, and the only reason it is a separate install is because they want to keep their November deadline, otherwise we would've waited maybe a few more weeks, but 2.0 would've come directly to the open beta branch.

I just tested a quick mission with a single Mustang starting from parking hot. I took off and started climbing at 46" 2700 RPM, while trying to maintain 170-200 mph. I managed to climb all the way up to 37000' without any issue. You don't have to change the mixture, but you do have to increase throttle, as manifold pressure decreases with altitude - it kicks back to 61" when the supercharger engages, though. What's the manifold pressure when you start having trouble at 15000'? Does it keep decreasing even if you max the throttle? I think it was at something like 45" with throttle fully open just before the supercharger kicked in. You could also manually engage the supercharger to get your manifold pressure back.

I believe you also need to add a folder for the specific aircraft you want (this can be a pain if you want to use a "general" custom page, but very useful for specific items).

Moving the stick forward moves the slip indicator
Cykyrios replied to grunf's topic in DCS: L-39 Albatros
This is actually normal behavior for any slip indicator: the ball wants to "fall", so if you stand still on the ground, it will be at the lowest point, which is the center. If you turn, it will go toward the outside of the turn. Now, if you push the stick forward, you get negative Gs, which you can also get by flying upside down; I would be surprised to see the ball centered while upside down. I'm pretty sure the only cases where it would be centered under negative Gs are somewhat high friction between the ball and the tube it runs in, and actively trying to balance the ball, which first requires sending it there when it wants to fall to either side. -
As a note, I just went to the Encyclopedia and had a look at all the planes. When I tried to start a mission after that, I noticed the game was already eating over 6 GB of RAM (I have 8 GB). Probably an issue with model/texture loading?

There are 2 places to check in the options: the Special tab, for your specific aircraft, and the Gameplay tab, where you can change the Avionics Language option (default is Native, you'll want to change that to English).

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! More seriously though, I don't think asking for civilian versions to be a top priority is the way to go, but neither is dismissing them altogether. I personally find myself flying the Huey without hardpoints more often than with them, just because I love flying around with it, away from the battlefield. Those who would tell me to go play FSX or X-Plane don't realize (or don't care) that would require buying another game with separate modules, and even that wouldn't be as good as DCS (I really like the damage model of aircraft, even if it has its own issues, and no other sim will give let you break half of your heli after a hard landing). However, once the original military version is ready, I don't get why a civilian version should not be added, whether it requires only removing the hardpoints, or tweaking the cockpit a bit as well. Aerobatics, formation flight, simple fun, all of these are possible with slick versions, so why not have them? It's not like the devs will ditch everything military to work on a single civilian version...

When pressing Ctrl+F10 to display the map view centered on the current location/aircraft, the map appears to be squished vertically. Going back to cockpit or external views and back to the map with F10 alone keeps the distortion, while pressing Ctrl+F10 again reverts back to normal. Subsequent cycles of any view/Ctrl+F10 map will again deform and fix the map. Reproduction: From any view, press Ctrl+F10. The screenshots below display a test case from a simple mission with a single AI TF-51D. From the undeformed F10 view, I pressed Ctrl+F11 to enter free camera view, then Ctrl+F10 back to the map view, with distortion. Pressing Ctrl+F11 and Ctrl+F10 once more fixes the map.

I just noticed this issue as well while trying to make a custom Mustang vs Dora simple dogfight mission. Putting Germany into the Red coalition leaves it blue in the Editor, but it does appear in the countries list's Red coalition. Playing as the Dora, the briefing reads "My Side: Germany" and "Enemies: Germany". However, I did manage to place a Red German aircraft once, by playing around with the coalition settings and saving them, but could not reproduce afterward.

I don't own the MiG-21, but this is indeed caused by hypoxia. If you'd stayed longer up there, it would've got worse and worse, up to the point where the screen turns black. These screenshots are from a test I performed with the Mustang a few weeks ago.

There is a new option in the Gameplay category: Avionics Language, that can be set either to Native or English; I assume the default (native) means it speaks in Russian here. I'll have a test quickly to check this behavior. Edit: Yup, leaving the cockpit display in Russian, but changing the Avionics Language to English, makes both the voice and the ABRIS display English, while the cockpit textures are still in Russian.

You can cycle through IAS, TAS and no info bar by pressing Ctrl + Y already. Vertical speed and Mach number could be an interesting addition indeed!

I just had a go at ILS with the Huey at Batumi an hour or 2 ago, it did work. I did have trouble with the Nalchik ILS in the Warthog, though, but I haven't tried again since I performed a repair (which I would recommend you do as well, and more generally, after every update).

As stated, this is a beta version, bugs are bound to be found here and there. Just because something worked in the previous version, but is broken in the current build, doesn't mean it won't be fixed, and it's absolutely not a reason to be irritated... In the mean time, I also found this seems to happen with most transparent objects (trees are 2D planes after all), such as canopies and rotors, as well as the "icons" of distant aircraft, see screenshots. Aircraft lights (at least the A-10C's position and collision lights) also appear through the fog/clouds as they would in clear skies. Well at least, this bug helped me with my IFR approach in the Huey :p
