Or some ACMI antenna, as there is an ACMI probe over there. See if anyone knows what those blue things are on the F-18 agressor wingtips. Shown at 00:32. Maybe some long wave antenna? Point is, it looks strange.

MiG-35's new systems - OLS
Force_Feedback replied to TucksonSonny's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Old video, you should visit this guy's site, that presents the whole deal, the one from which all the new info is leeched and posted here by some Polish memebers :P as in pilot.strizhi.info The first part of the video was about the NIIPP bureau, that they were designing a laser comm system with a high bandwidth to communicate with the ISS. The reflectors designed by them are used on the Glonass, GPS and Gallileo sattelite systems. Keep in mind that this is a completely new system, and the design bureau was explicitly asked for not having experience with aviation optical systems (only space based electronic systems). This resulted in a new system in a short time (a couple of years), partially due to some young engineers, not bound by all the constrains the older ones have. They competed with the makers of the original OLS system (so those lost, lol), which had lots of experience with such systems. The vice general constructor syays that the range has improved 2-3 times compared to the old system, and it has a tv channel. The IR system uses a more shorter wavelength than is commonly used in infrared systems (I remember them saying what those wavelengths were in the version I got, hmm, censorship, or my stoney brain?) The head-on detection range against a Mig-29 head on is 15km, rear aspect 45km. The constructor says that air friction heat is sufficient to detect the target in the IR range (talks are about stealth planes, the programme shows the F-22...), but he immediately states after that the exhause plumes (not engine heat, the hot air coming out the back) allows for a very far detection range. He also says that if this, stealts, plane is coming in from the front, the system also sees the exhaust plumes, and the leading edges. 'The plane is warm' is the direct quote when he's talking about air friction. All the transparent domes are made of saphire, to counteract 'sanding' caused by particles in the air (bugs :P). And the designer says that the detection range of a Mig-29-like target is more than 45km in the rear hemisphere, and more than 15km in the front hemisphere. The rangefinder works at 15km max for aerial and more than 20km for ground targets. The narrator says the system processes the images in real time, allowing a fast detection and classification. Detection of a non-afterburning target at a range of 45km and more. Identify the target type at 8-10km. For ground targets: range to spot a tank: up to 15km, aircraft carrier: 60-80km, identification of tank type: 8-10km, carrier: 40-60km. The lower optical system can be used for cartography as well, besides identifying and ranging targets. The laser detectors on the wingtips have a slightly more than a complete hemispherical detection envelope, more than 180 degrees. It allows to detect, and determine the direction from which the laser radiation is eminating. Then there is a missile launch warning system (optical as well), it works on 3 stages of missile flight: during the launch, when the start/booster engine is working, and when the missile is less than 5km away, it is seen because of a heated head. The launch detection range is over 50km. The system also determines, at ranges of over 5km how much of a danger the incoming missile is. The laser used in not based on pumped-lamps, it uses semicunductors for the generation (your dvd player has the same stuff, but it won't burn through paper sheets). Because of this the efficiency is significantly increased. All the systems are networked together, and the system constantly monitors for threats and their threat level. The computing system is based on 3 processors 'similar to Pentium 4s'. The system processes the images and is able to select targets at great distances, with couds illuminated by the Sun in the background. The information is transfered through glass fiber, with a 600 Mbit throughput (lol, my internet is 6 times slower than that of a Mig-35 :P), the fibre optic cables are very durable, and will work even if a tank drives over it. With this they've broken the convention that fibre optics were unreliable and not durable and sturdy enough for aircraft use. 'That all was quite a long time ago' he said before his sentence got cut. Now they have digital guncameras with solid state memory. The pilot is also able to view the target that is seen by the optical system (opposed to blips). The pilot can select either a tv image, or a mixed tv-IR image from either of the two optical stations. The amount of mixing of IR-tv is selectable by the pilot. He can also select the image from 'a pod' (yaay, they plan to hang even more pods on that thing). The laser and missile warning systems only give coordinates. All in all, a nice system, future systems will have improved recognition capability, it was said. -
'Engine failure' ;) Damn planes were unreliable in 1999.

I was lurking hte Ubi forums for like 6 months before I got an account, guess people are trying to see if the community is worth while. Or, they think lomac has some kind of tactical value.

Blackshark Question????
Force_Feedback replied to Blacknemisis's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
So it shouldn't matter with the Ka-50, same missile, same backward looking seeker. As long as you pint the laser grid at where you think the target is, the missile will fly all the way to target, without being jammed. Only thing that can stop the Vikhr is an active protection system, like the Drozd. But having those in BS would be too much good news at once. I don't see them making a system only the T-80 would use. -
Blackshark Question????
Force_Feedback replied to Blacknemisis's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
And will the AI do that in BS?, firing in a killbox, or will it just do pure pursuit as it does now? -
24 in june of 2006 at the Dzemgi AFB already, and ofcourse they have it, hence bieng the only planes to carry an ARH missile in the RuAF.
-
No, and most of them still doesn't, as only 24 Su-27SMs have been delivered to the Russian Airforce, that's why the only ARH himing missile in the RuAF inventroy is the RVV-AE. AFAIK the R-27EA seeker upgrade was put up for export in 1997/1998, but, except for the PLAF, had no other customers.

Engines just not powerful enough?
Force_Feedback replied to otester's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes, and the Russian planes have their real thrust moddled 100% correctly, as I'm sure you tried doing the maneuvers and take-offs the way the Russian planes do on videos, realistic, eh? ;) They both are off, well, according to manuals which were made with math and not taking into account the amount of stray carbon particles in the air, slowing the plane down more, reducing engine efficiency slightly, those kind of variables. -
Okay, to sum it up, are there any indications that there were any quantities of the AE variant in either Russian or Ukrainian service? Don't come up with pics or quoting books by 'experts', any info from the real weapon guys? The R-27P, should, by using the logic everyone seems to take for granted in this thread, be added to the game. Because, if it's now up for export sale, and since the Russians have the Ks-172 to replace it, it should be in game, right? No, we should have people that actually worked with these things, not spent their free time lurking on the net for R-27AE pics, or stating such things don't exist. No, we should ask people who were actually responsible for those weapons, and ask them, if they ever received such seeker variants, remember, not whole missiles, maybe the autopilot section was different on the -EA or -P, although I doubt it. <-- Again, speculation, maybe they did have other control sections.
-
ED won't add it because they believe that if a missile wasn't used in service (what service you ask, true) it shouldn't be on the ka-50 :/ I don't care much, because I like the flying portion of this game, but I still suspect it being some kind of weaseling out of not adding the Igla-v, not that I would care more or less, since I'm planning at getting shot at only. How can you define what's in service? 90% of the time pictures are published they show dummies, as there is no need to fly with real, dangerous ordnance. So, are there actually sources that say those fuel tanks are actually used, or strapped on for airshow (transfer) purposes, and those 23mm pods, and those bomblet containers? Yes there is no need for the Igla-V, then why is there a need for bomb containers and bombs, is there a need for the Vikhr, why not only use NURSes, like it was done in real life, and limit ourselves to 4 vikhrs being there 'just in case', as per real wold requirements? This might sound a bit Americanized, as in flying with live missiles and bombs because maybe there would be a stray Cessna trying to cross borders or blow up the whole USA, but how can ED really know what is being used and what not? I don't see a need for A-A missiles while the enemy has at most a captured BTR, maybe some BMPs, in real life that is. Same applies more or less to the R-27AE/EP speculation in another thread, how do you know what is stockpiled at the bases around the country? As for the 'I've seen pics' defense, well, in case of the Igla's, they are pictures of the things being suspended under the Ka-50 and fired. Is ED certain that the Igla-V is discontinued for the Ka-50, or is it a 'logical deduction' because the Vikhr has a proximity fuse? I'm not saying that it's some excuse, just that it seems fishy they jump the shark (heh) by immediately stating 'nay, no Iglas for ye'.

This is not a democracy, period.

MiG-21 used plain water for AB?!!
Force_Feedback replied to Vekkinho's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
But isn't it better just to have more fuel instead? Jet fuel is like 0.8 the weight of water, so you can have 20% more fuel, weight wise. Then you need seperate water tanks, plumbing, a water NOW! T-bar in the cockpit, not to mention a 'fuel' truck that has a water connector. Seems to me it is better to have more fuel than water, even complexity wise. -
Always sad to see such things happen. In Russia a cargo plane and a chopper went down, 12 deaths :| In the US two news copters collided, killing 4.

Nor does it have LOAL, the only LOAL missile in loomac s the heavily undermoddled MICA IR, which should have like god-like performance in both close combat as medium ranged. All LOPE MICA IRs, don't bother with ETs, those suck, and in real life, the R-27 has a crappy track record (the export versions, mind that). I also heard that during a live fire excercise an R-27R was used to intercept a stray SAM, than was coming at Mach 3 towards the launcher. Well, only 1 R-27R was needed to intercept that SAM, that's a ~6000 km/h closure rate. But again, this was a VVS R-27, not the R-27RE1

Black Shark Update, 16 September 2007
Force_Feedback replied to Wags's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
That's what they want you to believe... :P I don't see any reason why not to have the Su-25T while having BS, lot of BS flying on these boards. -
New DPS movie out soon - in fact how about next week?
Force_Feedback replied to DPS's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I have that one too, too bad that I once had this night, with lots of beer, and well, you know me, always trying to do something stupid while drunk... Anyway, I burned the whole thing in a Vodoo ritual, hoping it would fix some bugs in the real release :music_whistling: -
Hmm, someone's fearing for their jobs. Did you know that roughly 70% of all suicide bombers and your day-to-day warriors in the name of Allah (the ones who actually fund the 'cause') are from Saudi Arabia? Surely, they hate the Saudi king as well (saying that Allah will decide when it's his time to be punished), but seriousely, what do you expect, Saudi Arabia is not a democracy, remember? So what does it matter, they can also sell weapons to Sierra Leone, Eritrea, North Korea, you name it. Why not give Iran 40 Trillion, they have oil too, plus, it would make the ayatolla a total hypocryte, thus losing even more popularity from 'his' people. How's that for an idea? If Iran really wanted to wipe out Israel they already would have done so, be it with nukes or conventional means, so please don't fall for the propaganda the US is telling the whole world. What really does raise questions, if those ABM radars and missiles are not against Iran or Russia (as they have hypersonic steered MIRVs), then who is the enemy? Hitman, you really have a point there, who is/will be the new enemy?

We need the S-300V back, with the different missiles moddled, that way it will make all the whiners cry even more. There you are, flying your F-15 (face it, those complain the most), then you see a 'SA-12' symbol appearing, ok, still cool, no launch warning or something. Then half a minute later, beep beep, seconds later: *BOOOM*. And it came from above too :P Tor-M, Buk-M1, the S-300PS, the Patriot with PAC-2 missiles and the Tunguska-M (while stationary) can engage incoming missiles, and have that built into their design. The Kub has it too, but only some upgraded variant, the M2 IIRC. The Strelas, Rolands, Avengers, they all have this handy 'start running, or pop some smoke' kind of solution in real life. However, Strelas and Iglas (so Stingers as well) have proven, in real life, to be able to shoot down cruise missiles, but those fly ~200 km/h slower than a Maverick and are twice, or three times as big. I hope they will fix the Tunguska, because that is the most wrongly moddles SAM, the second stage does not have a rocket motor and is totally smokeless, and the first Stage accelerates it to ~Mach 3 and not Mach 1.8. They have coasting S-300Fs, so making a realistic 9m311M and 9m311K (Kashtan, naval) should not be that hard, as such implementation already exists. What is wrong is that the missile itself homes in on chaff, that is bull as well, unless the vehicle's radar will fall for chaff under 10km :P So, the ideal countermeasure against those should be flares, not chaff. I think we should have the S-300V back, and have that small missile 9m55 or something added :P (Dreams on, and drools like Homer while doing so)

part of NEW map in BS revealed!
Force_Feedback replied to JEFX's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Don't count on it though, I have a feeling they dropped that idea, the unpaved runways at least. -
part of NEW map in BS revealed!
Force_Feedback replied to JEFX's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I will be plowing each of them with AFM flying machines. How is the word on mission editor placable FARPs and 'unprepared' (steel mats; ie, Su-25's speciality) runways? -
Methinks something is wrong here...
Force_Feedback replied to S77th-konkussion's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
As in your dad? (Not too much pun intended, but still a bit) :D -
Back to the topic, my source was a conversation between Czich and Vadigfon on the sukhoi.ru forums, they were debating wether such delay was significant (or 1 second) and how it might word. Vadifon disagreed with Czich and stated that it's not certain what is meant by 'delay' in the Weapon System squencing manual (for the Su-27, N-001 radar). Okay, this concerns the R-27(E)R, but it also applies to the EA discussion.... errrm okay, somehow... We need realistic missiles in lomac 2, whine, cry, whine, etc....
