Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B He also mentioned that it's due to the inability of the radar to take into account it's own doppler shift. THIS is what I took from Nikodemuz's explanation to be the most relelevant problem here. In effect this introduces an error where the radar suddenly can't "see" the target anymore.

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B No I didn't, I actually understood the explanation as best I can. (Thanks to Nikodemuz's great clarification ). We're not talking about ground returns here, which do indeed have a doppler shift, and are filtered out as well as the radial velocity contacts which have the same doppler shift, we are talking about the so-called 0 relative airspeed doppler filter. It's apparently a real thing and in Naquii's last post he explains why these co-speed tail chase returns are dropped.

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B From the way I understand it now, from the above explanations it's NOT being filtered out by the MLC filter, but it is rather a limitation of the design of the AWG9 it seems the radar is simply not modern enough to compensate (or calculate) for it's own doppler shift which is why the relative 0 speed targets are dropped in this mode of operation. (Again, it's not receeding targets, but targets with a zero relative airspeed to the radar)

https://alert5podcast.podbean.com/e/scramble-04-matt-wags-wagner/ Skip to 11:44, it seems it's a no go for ED currently, but still a possibility for 3rd parties.

Couple operational questions about the F-14.OnlyforDCS replied to Airhunter's topic in DCS: F-14A & B I don't think I've seen it explained anywhere (I probably missed it in the manual) but are flaps automatically retracted above a certain speed?

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B Ok i think I get it now and Naquaii's explanation now makes sense. Thanks for the great clarification Nikodemuz!

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B Hmmm, this is exactly the opposite of how I believed doppler radars work. Now Im really confused :noexpression:

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B But isn't this exactly what happens in a co-speed (tail chase)? The target won't be moving either away from you or towards you, it's relative speed will be 0 to you so it won't have either a red or blue shift relative to your own radar?
-
Dang. Too late for me ;)

Honestly I would prefer the Su-24, preferably done by Heatblur using their Jester AI. Maybe they would call it Yuri AI :) However since that is highly improbable a Su-17 or a Su-22 would still be highly desireable in my book.

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B Hang on Naquaii, I thought that this second "filter" is actually a hardware limitation of the physical properties of the way the radar works itself? It sees doppler returns. A target that has a relative 0 speed to the radar, doesn't have any doppler shifts, therefore no target is detected. Or am I missing something?

It's an ancient saying from the earliest days of software development, eons ago in ancient times (back in the 90s) the term "going GOLD" or just "gold" was invented to describe a piece of code that was finalized and was ready for publishing or rather "printing" on ancient media storage devices called CDROMs. The code had to be finalized, as once these cdroms were made there was no way to change or update it. ;) Congrats to Heatblur! :)

Don't worry it's fully automated. Once you tell him to handle all countermeasuers he will use them depending on the situation at hand, as best he can. (Remember though that if he can't "see" an IR missile launch, he won't fire a flare)
-
You can tell Jester via the Jester menu whether you want him to deploy either flares & chaff, or just chaff. I definitely saw that in one video, not sure right now which one it was. But Jester has a CMS sub-menu on the Jester Wheel where you can set that up.

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B Awesome! Missed that in my readthrough, thanks. So I guess it's possible for a coordinated crew to maneuver the plane quite a bit and still hold decent TWS tracks. Now for the inevetable question. Does Jester move the centerpoint of the antena if the pilot starts to crank the plane?

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B Thats a really interesting question that I would love to know the answer to.

After watching some more of that stream I take it back. DDGamer can't fly this thing to save his life. Literally every single time he enters a merge he manages to get it into a flat-spin. He pays no attention to the AoA, seems to pull too much stick (curves?) & doesn't turn off roll SAS for one thing, but he's really struggling with it. He claims that it's the hardest plane to fly in DCS, but Im not sure he has tried any of the warbirds :)

Jabbers - DCS World - F-14 Tomcat - Back Seat - RIO AWG-9 TutorialOnlyforDCS replied to Jabbers_'s topic in DCS: F-14A & B BTW, excellent video. Probably the best radar tutorial video I've seen yet. Apart from the one Ironhand did on the F15 like 10 years ago. :)

Full 8min align, quick option in special tab?OnlyforDCS replied to CoBlue's topic in DCS: F-14A & B Yeah pretty much this. I imagine it would be very easy for mission designers and server admins to include stored headings in their F14s if they so desire. Please watch the video from Jabbers, it shows how aligning the INS from stored heading works, and how quick and simple it is: /sniped again :)
