** UPDATE: F-14 Flight Model - Episode I - "The Basics" **
OnlyforDCS replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Thanks for sharing, can't wait. Really, can't wait. As much as I appreciate these, they make me sad at the same time. Since they indicate that release is much further away than I thought. :( -
Thats not how DCS does flight modeling. If the real plane has a long throw stick, thats whats going to be simulated. Use curves, get a stick extension, or get used to it. This is not going to change.

You are indeed correct. Momentum is a huge part of the equation too. Newtons Third Law: force x time = momentum I have ammended my post to correct this oversight.
-
A simplified way of saying what LF has wonderfully described, from a physical point of view is that just looking at airframe/airfoil stall is not enough. There are any number of forces always acting on the airframe at any one time, and lift is just one of them. All of these combined over time give the airplane it's momentum. If the net vector of the forces active on the airframe at any one time is pointing towards the sky, thats where the airframe will want to move at that point in time. Thats why, depending on the airframe's momentum, if you remove lift it doesnt automatically mean the airframe will fall out of the sky.

This. It always amazes me when RL pilots forget that we don't have the same hardware as in the real plane. The joystick being the obvious culprit here. A lot can be done to alleviate this with curves, even more with joystick extensions, but I've been flying without curves (MSFFB2) and with a little bit of practice I can fly the thing pretty much perfectly. As for the ground handling, the trick here is to set it down in a gentle three point, pull the stick full back and then apply a little bit of brakes to prevent the wing to tip over. Again it's a lot easier in the real plane as it has a separate brake axis on the flight stick which can be dosed out as required and applies differential braking when rudder is applied. The lack of a lockable tail wheel also kind of complicates things. The flight model is not to blame here.

I don't see anything wrong with what the Tacview recording is showing other than a clear mistake by the Su27 driver. Like Ironhand already said, the F15 driver pulled over the top at its lowest energy level. Any other maneuver and it would have stalled completely and fallen out of the sky, but pointing the nose over the top and then down as he did prevented that and allowed the plane to recover. Look at the 19 second mark. The flanker driver makes a mistake and pulls 75 degrees AoA and completely tosses his energy advantage out the window at that point of the engagement. For this reason he also has to dive to recover before the F15 does, which gives the F15 driver the clear energy and altitude advantage from that point forward.

Performance improvements in VR only or what? I've been taking a break from DCS World lately, waiting for the F14 or the F18, or 2.5 (whichever comes first) and for performance improvements to Normandy. Might have to check out this patch.

DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!

Will there be a pre-order discount for the F14? (Once we get to preorders that is) -
Setting realistic expectations for the Hornet

Always great to hear and see some RL fighter pilots commenting on the RL performance of fighter jets. KUDOS  -
It is a nice video. The 2.1 effects can be seen nicely, and the sounds are terrific. It would have been nice though if he botched the landing just a little bit (or did some stalls/spins), so we could know for sure :) (Also I hate, really, really hate this "shaky cam" crap that everyone keeps using. It makes it very difficult to judge what the aircraft is actually doing in the air)
-
It is difficult to judge because of the "realistic" shaky cam style recording compared to your SFM video. Also none of the air maneuvers are really edge of the envelope stuff. IMO The only thing that you can accurately say that looks a bit different is the spring effect of the gear, although the wheels still look like they are on rails once they touch down. I would definitely like to hear from the original author of the video, because it would be a first for eagle dynamics to release an update to the Flight Model of an aircraft, without publishing it in the patch notes.

The landing is different? How? It looks the same to me.

Can we expect the rudder to stiffen with "q" ?
OnlyforDCS replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Do you mean that the rudder should deflect less for the same pedal input at higher speeds? Yes it doesn't work that way currently but that is intentional and is not going to change. It was explained by Yo-Yo that since there is no way that they can simulate leg strength of virtual pilots, they want to let us have the maximum motion range of our virtual controls. In the real plane the rudder does stiffen, but it doesn't change the range of the pedal inputs. You feel the force, so you have to push harder, but the distance you need to push for a certain level of deflection remains the same. So thats what we are getting in the Spit. Yes the drawback is that we all have superhuman leg muscles in our virtual birds, so she will always be twitchy. Curves can help here quite a bit. -
Ahm, you sure about that PFM part? Im 99% sure that this mini demo was flown with the existing SFM.
-
What was the wind speed and direction on takeoff? And yes you can avoid going full right stick on takeoff, as long as you apply right stick gradually as your speed increases, and you use your rudder pedals judiciously. (Tail wheel locked in place of course)
-
Personally, I couldn't care less what it looks like (or even if its animated) as long as its physics and its interaction with the ship and airframe is simulated to DCS standards.

Simming the stealth fleet; a matter of time?
OnlyforDCS replied to proletariat23's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I really dig how he posts these little "tidbits" of "information" you know, just enough so that it seems that he has access to some super secret intelligence reports and whatnot, as if he is some hyper cool military analyst, but then gets things so horribly wrong with claims that Iran is an Arabic state....lol trully entertaining! Great stuff. Lemme go find some more popcorn! -

I've been avoiding the Su33 because of the SFM. It will be interesting to see how it flies compared to the Su27 once it get's its own PFM. Wonder whether it will come before or after the Hornet? -

Spitfire Fuel Consumption/ Range test
OnlyforDCS replied to philstyle's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Nice video. Just a small nitpick you forgot to set your altimeter to 0 before take-off, so the actual cruise altitude was a bit lower than 15k feet. -
DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!
OnlyforDCS replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Well thats all very fine and well probad, but on how many DCS multiplayer servers have you had effective EWR or GCI coverage? Even on Blueflag it's really spotty and depends a lot on the effectiveness of the person doing the job. Even with effective coverage (or a western RWR) anytime an enemy Tomcat is within 20-30 Nm of your position, and lighting up your RWR you will have to be on your toes expecting and waiting for that active phoenix lock tone. -
DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!
OnlyforDCS replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
A question about the Soviet RWRs in the game currently. The most modern one we have is the SPO15 in the Su27 and the Su25, right? In DCS AFAIK that particular RWR can only tell you the type of threat that is illuminating you. It can't discern between the different radars like most western RWRs. So how does a SPO15 equipped plane figure out that it definitely is an F14 out there painting him?
