  1. The current visual "aids" that are incorporated into DCS are basically this: past a point every aircraft will display as one pixel. As in one pixel of your complete resolution. Unfortunately the way this is implemented right now is through FOV. The SIM calculates this distance based on your field of view. Zooming basically decreases your fov, so the dot is not displayed. Another problem with this is that on monitors with very high resolutions (high pixel density) but a small screen size relative to it, the dots are so small they are almost impossible to pick up. Basically what this means is that for DCS you need the largest monitor you can afford at the lowest resolution possible for best spotting results. At close ranges though, when the LOD model is displayed this changes again. And the high resolution monitors have an advantage again. In short. Visibility is very hard in DCS.
  2. This. I used to think I was never going to get anywhere in DCS. After a while though, I finally feel I am getting somewhere. The key is though not to give up. Im not denying that there are issues with the sim. Visibility being a top one. But it's gotten a whole lot better in 2.1 and it's only going to get better. I too sort of "quit" WWII planes for a while. After a while of flying the M2000C and getting some kills with it, I found that many times I got into situations where once again Im losing visibility in the merge and getting killed for it. NO sensor will help you as much as the Mk1. Eyeball when in the merge. This is true for both WWII planes as well as modern jet fighters. The difference is that in the jet fighters once you get into a dogfight, it's even harder to keep a visual on the target. As for Burning Skies, I suggest you stick with it. It's one of the few servers that has "dot" labels which help a lot with spotting. Keep checking your six too. Like all the time. Every time you feel that you are safe, look behind you and snake around a bit. This has saved me countless times.
  3. What do you mean them? Don't you mean us? :) Seriously, when looking at most of the forum posts on these forums it's like everyone is split into two camps. I guess those of us who like our cake and want to eat it too are in the minority here. Is it really such a crime to enjoy both NATO and Soviet fighter jets? I do agree that once the Tomcat and Hornet are released there will be a problem with parity on the multiplayer side of things, with no real Soviet/Russian Gen4+ plane in the pipeline.
  4. It all depends. If you are much higher than your intended target or pursuer, for example at the top arc of a High YoYo, you are already slow so pulling harder to get back into an attacking dive is not that much of a penalty as you will quickly regain that lost speed in the dive. Energy fighting is difficult but if you are smart about it you can quickly figure out the do's and don'ts.
  5. I know that you personally are not, but that sentence right there is a blatant lie. It's either that, or ignorance. I don't think you are that ignorant Frostie. I know of at least three people (Im not naming names) in this thread who are obviously asking for a buff to their favorite weapons delivery platform and using "balance" as an excuse. It's easy to make out who they are if you read the whole thread carefully. There are probably more who do it, but are much more subtle in their disgusting trolling.
  6. So, basically trapping this thing will be a piece of cake when using the ACLS system? I have a question, do real life pilots have authority to use ACLS whenever they want to, or is it a system that is used as a last resort? (very low Visibility, Pilot is injured, incapacitated, etc?)
  7. Here is an idea for the mods: Put a wishlist sub-forum inside every third party's forum section.
  8. Interesting. Thanks for the heads up Raven68. I didn't know Chizh confirmed that it was planned for release for this year.
  9. AFAIK even Eagle Dynamics is working on a "GARMIN" navigation system which will be added as an option to most modules. Hell, Im pretty sure that today a real pilot could probably use google maps and the GPS in his mobile phone to figure out where he is. If Blue Flag is about simulating warfare during a certain era, when satelite navigation wasn't cheap or easy, or even existant, then turning off map icons in the F10 map makes a lot of sense.
  10. Very strange. I have the same card, on a similar system, and I had locked 60 FPS in 1.5.X with all options maxed out (except ground shadows, which were set to flat). I only had FPS drops to the 40s or so, on very crowded airports. For 2.1.1 I have had to drop some settings to get 60 FPS (I use adaptive VSYNC), primarily the in-cockpit shadow setting (Set to flat now) and MSAA which is set to OFF.
  11. I hope you posted that OP from your work computer! :)
  12. I have both. I almost always choose the Spit over the P51 when flying Allies. Main reason? Much more lethal in a quick and dirty dogfight, and the better defensive fighter. Fighting in the P51 is hard. You need altitude and speed, and the eyes of a hawk to spot contacts flying lower than you are. Not to mention the rather mediocre .50 cals. Once the new damage model comes, and we get some serious escort missions Ill probably give some more love to the P51.
  13. Yes it allows you to align your INS immediately so in that regard it's a cheat. Im saying, so what? If you made it a server only option, people would just fly without an aligned INS. It's not like most of us don't know the Caucassus map by now, like the back of our hand.
  14. Happy birtday Larry/Zeus! :pilotfly:
  15. Erm, this is a very strange poll. For one thing there is an obvious choice missing. "It won't be released in 2017". I hope that we see it soon, but there is really no way we can truly know unless ED comes out and says it's coming at "such and such a time". Which is something they don't do anymore unless they are absolutely certain they will make it.
  16. It's not a cheat, not really. Think about it. The M2000C is an interceptor primarily. The plane works just fine without the INS in the role most people use it online. Even if you made it a server only option, you could simply not turn it on and fly and fight (in the A2A role) just fine without it.
  17. That is very probably true Sithspawn, but ED's policy lately with regards to marketing has been to focus on what is next in line for release. Very little is usually said about other future products in the pipeline, other than that they are being worked on. Which is exactly as it should be IMO. Too much hype usually leads only to disappointment when deadlines are inevitably missed, or when projects are put on hold or priorities switched, etc. etc. etc.
  18. Yeah they look kind of unnatural. Im sure that they could remove them and no one would even notice, and it would probably improve performance. Every little bit counts.
  19. Wow thats quite a hit. Maybe if they reduce the number of tracers used and like you said let them fire in salvos performance would improve? Im sure Eagle Dynamics are aware of it though, all in all a good solid update.
  20. GTX970 here. Quick report back after latest update. Unlike voodooman, I still have to have shadows set to flat only in cockpit to maintain relatively stable 60FPS, at similar settings. Still Im satisfied with the performance, this is with the Spitfire which is graphically the most demanding module currently.
  21. Im using 1.5, works well for me.
  22. Does the WWII AA work now?
  23. Im itching to try this. I absolutely love the in cockpit shadows, and had to turn them to flat for 2.1.0. Thanks for the report back!
  24. Will you be (re)testing and editing your original post now that 2.1.1. is out? Im curious to see whether there are any performance differences between these two versions? Thanks!
