Answer - don’t expect to see this jet in DCS (at least anytime soon)
-
Yes, I saw this… Quite tempted to get involved. Not having a UK flying Mossie is a huge gap in our aviation heritage
-
I thought I’d read somewhere that the Meteor was deployed to Europe - just never ended up with the jet v jet showdown with the 262…? (although the ref I remember suggested the deployed Meteors had an all over white paint scheme to distinguish them from the German jet…)
-
I have to say, that from my recent reading I have been surprised by just how much of the Mosquitos service was based around the dark hours. The Bomber Command B variants of course - PFF target marking, Light Night Striking Force… and nightfighters. But the night intruder role was much bigger than I was aware of, especially the constant attacks in the German NF bases. My finding out more about 214 Squadron and other 100 Group Ops has been a real eye opener

Do the rad shutters make any difference??? (I may have been kidding myself that opening the rad was a fix)

@Robi-wan a quick question about AIR 27 / Operations Record Books… … is there an equivalent searchable record for the OCU / HCU units?? Tours start / end with postings from or to these units and the trails for individual aircrew go cold… Particularly interested in 1657 CU and 1699 HCU (apologies drifting a long way from Hispano cannon fit )

Agreed that the Operations Record Books are an invaluable source of info… Also known, and searchable as AIR 27, they are basically the operational log for each squadron. Must have been completed by the CO or Adj. The style and content can vary depending on the individual writing up the record. Form AIR 27 has been the only way I have managed to dig into info / records for an aircrew relative… best approach I have found is to search by squadron / year and then browse through the search returns. Generally, these consist of “Summary of Events” and “Record of Events” forms. The summaries can be monthly but sometimes longer periods and cover general flying, weather, training and promotions, transfers, casualties. The record of events is a log of each operation and gives airframe, crew, weapon load, target and a brief description ETA it is quite sobering to see the operational intensity of some of the main force bomber squadrons. Ops on consecutive nights, long flights, fog bound returns… and looking at monthly records over say a year, how few of the crews were the same I remember my relative saying he didn’t like Ops to Milan or Turin - an 8-9 hour flight in a Stirling and insufficient ceiling to fly over the Alps. They had to navigate through the mountains… at night in a fully loaded four engined bomber

Not sure the Mossie was ever used for “carpet bombing”… …and with the exception of disastrous early war daylight missions, the RAF didn’t go in for formation bombing. Bomber Command’s night bombing offensive was based on the “Bomber Stream” concept - each crew / navigator responsible for their own route to the target and back, with the overall objective of achieving a time and altitude over the target and with all bombers passing through within a given time window (which could be hours on large raids to minimise collision risk) The Bomber Command B variant Mossies would have been used for nuisance raids - diversionary attacks to draw nightfighters from the main “Heavies” route / target, or for target indicator marking as part of the Pathfinder force.

Now that would be good - and explain the bulge… Did the FB.XVIII retain the engine / fuselage of the FB.VI donor?

I’m speculating here, but the idea of swapping out gun fits in a swing role type of approach seems pretty unlikely… Each squadron would have had a particular role - not just the aircraft, but crew training as well. The Hispanos may have been removable for maintenance / repairs / replacement, but to change roles would have required a lot of work and seems unlikely. The F / FB versions had a flat screen for gun sighting, whereas the B versions had a streamlined split screen, and of course the plexiglass nose for bomb aiming. De Havilland may have taken individual airframes for trial fitting various mods at there Hatfield plant, but seems less likely that this would have been at a squadron level. Agreed on all counts… but the “fiction” of a B model has been sparked by an ED Newsletter comment about the bulged bomb door mod (as a “mod”, only a B.IV or B.IX feature) I’d love the FB.VI to mount the Molins in a future FB.XVIII (we have the Type VIc as a target ) But I’d also love to see a future B or PR model ETA - For anyone in the UK, or planning a visit to the UK… I’d strongly recommend visiting Salisbury Hall. It’s where the Mosquito was designed, and they have a bomber version (B.35), fighter bomber (FB.VI) and this absolute beauty:

TBH… what’s the point of the second crew member (been debated already)… I know - radar operator on the night intruder / NF versions

DCS: de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB Mk VI Discussion

I’d rather have an early access model than no model at all… -
Absolutely - FB & B please…! Oh, and if the B works out, then a PR should be a small extra stretch…
-
The Ishak is the only WW2 module I don’t have… and it looks like it should be a “must buy” (let’s see when the Mossie is due…) I’d also forgotten just how funny Laobi’s video reviews are - thanks for the reminder

Lots of calls for a G6, but the Emil would be much better for variety…

I didn’t say as much… but I guess where I was going… If ED are genuinely hinting at the bulged bomb bay doors of the B variant cookie mod, then it would most likely be a B.IV with Merlin 21s…??? A B.IX or B.XVI requiring much more significant changes (which would be perfectly ok with me…) -

B.IV mod for the 4000 lbs cookie… carried forward to the B.IX From the engine perspective I think I read that the B.IX had later series Merlins, whereas the B.IV and FB.VI were similar / same… -
Surely, submarine warfare without a. sonar model is equivalent to BVR missiles without a working radar model…

My starting the “worried” thread wasn’t a cue for a DCS WW2 digfest… I’m greatly enjoying flying the warbirds. IIRC I bought the Dora, Mustang, Spitfire and Kurfürst at or shortly after release, but PC limitations restricted my flight hours in DCS until relatively recently. My go to aircraft are the 2 FWs, followed by the Spit, 109 and occasional P-51 flights… so dominated by warbirds. My flight hours in modern modules is very modest in comparison, even though I have a good number of jets and helos in the hanger. So DCS WW2 is where I want to fly. Yes there are wrinkles - AI capabilities being my biggest niggle… but there is much more that is great about DCS WW2, and I’m currently doing stuff in the ME to push my own boundaries, learning and workarounds Hugely looking forward to the Mossie and the Corsair and actually believe DCS WW2 is one of the highlights of the DCSW platform - each aircraft feels and flies differently, which is a massive

Are there up to date equivalents to Dangerous Waters / Fleet Command / 688i etc…? Used to have these, but it was a long time ago - and I probably gravitated more to Silent Hunter 3. Still, all fascinating, deeply involving sims
-
I think it would be useful to pull the Maps and Third Party threads into here so that all DCS WW2 content has a single home. The Corsair and I-16 are a bit lost in amongst the rest of the third party stuff

presumably this means ED have gained access to the stash of drawings found at Airbus and handed to The People’s Mosquito project…? -
I’ve experienced this in missions I’ve just created and in free flight as well…

OK, so have been playing around with this idea - very tricky / challenging (ie plenty to learn / improve…!) We don’t have a Lanc / Halifax, so I set up a line astern group of B-17s with a couple km spacing to imitate a bomber stream… needed to be individual aircraft on same route, not a formation. Challenges / things to fix: - Nightfighter ops really do need GCI… in the absence of GCI I used the F10 map and object labels as a cheat… rather not have to resort to these, but even on a moonlit night I think it would be near impossible without - Searchlights - had some set up around Ouistreham and around my home airfield. Wanted both the visual reference and the possible coning of bombers… but they didn’t come on… - Orientation… needs careful and disciplined flying to avoid getting disoriented - same as any IFR, but with added: - Depth / distance perception. Closing speed, visual refs and firing distance much trickier in the dark One surprise though - the B-17 gunners didn’t open up on me…! Definitely worth fleshing this out / tweaking if you want a challenge.
