The level of activity in the WW2 forums seems scarily low at the moment… I hope that this doesn’t reflect the size of the DCS WW2 user base and commercial appeal Here’s Hoping that the Mossie, Corsair and any as yet undisclosed PTO modules liven things up a bit…!

Either way, if Raz can get their S Atlantic map and assets packs out then we should get a big boost to CW naval assets

A bit harsh on the Oberon class… Mid CW for sure, but not retired until after the collapse of the USSR, and IIRC finally left RN service at the same time as the four Upholder class subs. SSK contemporaries of the Valiant and Swiftsure class SSNs…? … and from what I recall at the time, had a reputation for being very quiet and utilised for special ops with the SBS…?

As much as I’d like to see an expanded naval element in the sim - recent and especially WW2… I can’t help thinking that DCS isn’t the right platform for submarine warfare. A LOT of work would required on the marine environment, assets, sensors and weapons systems - all for engagements that are largely hidden from view Pragmatic approach would be to concentrate on surface ship assets

There is an Oberon class boat supposedly in development…

JF used to include a “Pilots Handbook” type doc with their civvy sim WW2 offerings… I will probably have the Spit, Lanc and Mossie boxes somewhere…

Surely even the Spit and 109 would effectively be totally new aircraft??? Emill > Freidrich = new airframe > Gustav = new engine > Kurfürst = magic dust Spitfire history confuses me, but even so a BoB Mk 1s is going to be way different to a V and the IXc we have is, as with the 109, a different airframe and engine generation… Dont get me wrong, I’d absolutely love a Spit I and Vb / Vc as well as a 109 Emil and Freidrich but I can’t see that they have any modelling in common with a IX or Kurfürst

Lynx / Wildcat… might as well aim for the top

Bringing to attention some of the problems with WW2

Perhaps I wasn’t expressing myself clearly… I had no problem with Dora’s speed, she’s my favourite aircraft for A2A - but there is no way the Spit should have been able to close the gap when, at best, it should only have been able to match my start speed (it didn’t come out of a dive into my tail) which is why I pulled in to a shallow climb - which does seem to work against the P-51s… they can follow you but not close the gap -

So, there’s me bowling along the Kent coast in a Dora, when an AI Spit IX starts to follow… I’m doing 600km/h (373mph) at 2400m and because I’ve got labels on can see that the Spit is at 2.4km. Using a tactic that seems to work against the Mustang, I put the Dora into a gentle climb and try to extend. Next check and the Spit has closed to 1.1 km and is lining up for a shot… BTW, my flight are still sat behind me following like sheep. I radio them to engage, they confirm “engaging” and fly off to tackle an Allied flight some 16km away…. At the same time I push my nose down to try and separate from the Spit, but by the time I get to sea level (and 700kph) am taking hits. So the Spit is faster in a dive… but I’d not expected it to half the distance in a climb, against a Dora, when I was already flying at close to the Spits top speed Any way to check what he was climbing at?? -
Is there any way to get you home field to put flare-path on?? Tried a moonlit night flight in the Anton but it is a devil of a job to find and line up with the runway. Managed to land in the end but the ground crew are going to be pretty busy

Haha - certainly not Gran Turismo… although you’d get roasted on GTPlanet for such heresy -
DCS: de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB Mk VI Discussion
rkk01 replied to msalama's topic in DCS: Mosquito FB VI
Thanks That’s really useful and tallies with what I’d surmised from photos / descriptions / Google Earth… start the run in near Albert and follow the Route Nationale (D929 today) all the way in to the target No chance of a Tiffie escort in DCS… will need the Spit IXs to head off the 190s -
DCS: de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB Mk VI Discussion
rkk01 replied to msalama's topic in DCS: Mosquito FB VI
Target time… having scouted the site in a Mustang (prison wasn’t there / yet), the long, straight road is a very easy marker (south side of prison wall, left off view, I think). It reads as if the Mossies followed the road in from the ENE / NE, as one account mentions having to bank the aircraft to keep one wingtip above the line of poplar trees along the road -
best answer I’ve seen in a looooong time

Not a WW2 aircraft, but a Hawker Sea Fury would be absolutely awesome

why would anyone limit themselves to just one set of aircraft?

Main issue with WW2 is the AI, certainly for SP users - AI gunnery, whether air gunners or flak, seems to behave like it’s radar guided… the coding always knows your x,y,z / bearing & elevation… even at range, jinking, high deflection etc - AI flight models… I appreciate that it may not be feasible to apply the same FM to AI models (without compromising PC performance), but perhaps there should be some hard coded envelope limits for each aircraft? AI climb and turn performance should be at least broadly prototypical…! -
I think sound can be very variable between set ups…. I got into a spat on the Spitfire cockpit graphics / sound thread as I was shocked by the “low quality Spitfire sounds”. Sounded like a high pitched petrol lawnmower, even though the Anton and Dora sounded good Turned out that my sound set up had gone from 7.1 surround to two speaker stereo, just using two tinny front speakers - timing corresponded with a Win 10 update. Some fiddling got the full surround back and all was good. Not sure why the Spit sound was so badly affected compared to the other aircraft - possibly a more sophisticated sound setup with more reliance on the sub???

That’s really hard to separate out… The B variants were often assigned Pathfinder roles for target marking or Light Night Striking Force on diversionary raids to draw nightfighters away from the main force heavies - difficult to put a figure on the significance of that role. Equally, the Mossie NF variants and RCM units of 100 Group made a huge, but secret, impact on the effectiveness of Bomber Command and eroded the ability of the Luftwaffe Nachtjagd units So, basically there is a good argument for one of each…!

Yes, but the Mosquito was conceived in 1939 and first flew in 1940… entered service in 41, all before the US entered the war. Availability of aluminium in the US in 1944 wasn’t part of the design brief The turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic was May 43, so availability of strategic materials was absolutely an important issue Not sure where your home country is, but in most towns in the UK you can still see the stumps where ornate steel railings were cut off for war materials, and I believe, there were even community collections of pots and pans etc for war materials

Specifically RAF Fortress Mk.III skins…? (any RAF Fortress would be good) on the basis that the B-17 is the only 4-engined bomber in DCS WW2 general comment - it would be useful to be able to search by unit in user files. At the mo that is only available for full aircraft modules and not for aircraft that are AI only
