Hind tempting, obviously, but what exactly are we going to do with it?
rkk01 replied to AvroLanc's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
From those books... add high mountains, irregular troops / insurgents... and terror IIRC from “The Bear’s Tears”, some AP mines and some napalm are also needed in the mix For mission building, a 2+2 with a pair of Mi-8s. Hounds to the guns, drive fish to the nets. Air mobile troops to flush out, or cut off. Hind to be the exterminator. The books are fiction, but they don’t paint the Hind as a “hide behind a tree” type helo - use it as a menacing terror weapon (oh and throw in a few MANPADS to even things up) well - that’s the stuff of Cold War legend anyway... good enough for me...! ETA - comments re AI limitations feel like they will apply... OPFOR AI infantry need to coded with a FEAR response -

The acting, that is Although, of course, so is the flying https://youtu.be/su5JWj8Wlec https://youtu.be/2A04o_kVonQ For the unconvinced - This is what DCS Mosquito is for

Agree with Mogster... Certainly for my generation, I’d say the relevant “top 3” British aircraft from WW2 would have been: Spitfire Mosquito Lancaster I think that had probably changed since the dreadful fatal crash of the last airworthy British Mossie in 1996... The lack of an airshow performer has probably caused the Mossie to fade from public consciousness, whereas the BBMF Spitfires, Lancaster and Hurricanes continue to entertain. Hurricane was always the Cinderella aircraft - not sufficiently recognised Mossie was regarded on a par with the Spitfire when I was growing up - faster, sleeker, known for outstandingly daring raids @Qiou87 I suggest you find a copy of the film “633 Squadron”

Question - has the Caucasus map been used for any WW2 campaigns??? Reading about the 1942 battles between the Don and Volga and it occurred to me that I had once met someone who fought in the Caucasus. A quick cross check on locations confirmed that both Mozdok and Malgobek are on the DCS map - significant locations on the Eastern Front The whole Caucuses map offers amazing WW2 potential for air, land and naval units, although the Soviet eqpt would largely be lend lease and German aircraft would be out of era. (I realise towns / infrastructure are “modern” but still the same setting) Sure this has all been said before - not sure how it took so long for me to join up the dots

Really...???!!! Quite shocked and surprised at that view - always thought of the Mosquito as one of the iconic aircraft of WW2, and certainly in the top 3 amongst the British aircraft.

Friday??? Video output is cranking up

Not sure why the P-38 would be overly complex compared to other modules... The only feature not modelled elsewhere are the counter rotating props / engines. The Allison engines aren’t in-game, but can’t see that they’d be fundamentally different to the Merlin, Jumo or DB605... various flavours of turbo supercharging are already implemented Twin engine prop is in game as is tricycle undercarriage prop

I’ve been setting up “training” missions for the Anton on the Nevada map - generally strike missions against US forces at other airfields - desert scheme Antons over the Nevada desert Today’s mission was a possible nod to the forthcoming Mossie and the famous film. Flying out of Echo Bay strip (that’s real short [and narrow!!!] with a bombed up 190) for a run down Lake Mead and over / under the Hoover Dam and the road bridge - AAA located at strategic positions in the canyons and approaching the dam. Got hosed by flak but limped back as far as Nellis for a bumpy landing. No idea how many cylinders were left running, but it wasn’t many...! Tend to use the Dora for A2A, but even that got a pasting from the Spits over the Channel at the weekend. Thought I would be able to outrun them, but didn’t work...

AI Gunnery Unreasonable at High-Aspects

Has anyone taken hits from the AI in the nice new clouds?? Would be a useful test of the “see you everywhere” theory -
Heatblur Tornado spotted in Hind Video today?

Agreed - airfield flyby on the Hind vid looks like RAF Akrotiri -

But, a VERY odd choice to have on the ramp with a bunch of Hinds... -
Pretty sure the card was conventional PCI but new m/b is all PCIe
-
can’t argue with that...! Really looking forward to both the Mossie and the Corsair

Thanks. Pretty much as I suspected, but a case of jump in and have a go, I guess

Spitfire cockpit model / textures, roughness , sound ?
rkk01 replied to Jexmatex's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Computers - you’ve got to love them.... Seems like all my speakers had dropped off except for the front pair Realtek HD Audio Manager would not recognise my speaker setup and would therefore only a allow 2-channel stereo configuration - so I’d lost the sub-woofer and the centre, mid and rear speakers. Seems like this has been quite a common issue and “may” be linked to some W10 updates. Either way, I now have a full speaker setup again and the Spitfire sounds completely different. Not sure why the Spitfire was more affected compared to the other warbirds, other than the Merlin sounds being perhaps more dependent on the bass channel. Doppler effect in flyby now makes you hair stand on end - as it should...! -
Can anyone advise on hardware etc for DCS??? I used to have a really good audio set up (to my ears anyway) Creative X-fi card outputting to a Creative T7900 sub and 7.1 speaker system. Yes, an old system, but filled the room with sound and was excellent for both gaming and music... When I last upgraded my motherboard (2020) I had to ditch the X-fi card as there wasn’t a suitable expansion slot. The m/b onboard Realtek sound output doesn’t recognise the 7.1 speaker set and has never delivered the same sort of audio that the older kit provided Any thoughts? Is there a modern equivalent to / improvement on the X-fi? I see Creative do a USB based expansion

Spitfire cockpit model / textures, roughness , sound ?
rkk01 replied to Jexmatex's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Both excellent videos... In fact, the Oshkosh one was what I used for my initial comparison for the DCS Spitfire The “DCS Spitfire over Normandy” vid couldn’t be more different to the Spitfire sounds in my version of DCS (have now tried it in 2.7 and 2.5) Could be my setup... I swapped my motherboard last year and the onboard sound on the new m/b is not as good as my previous SB X-Fi expansion card (no slot for it on the new board) I guess I should also check my in game settings for DCS - any recommendation would be useful... That said, other warbird sounds (and jets) in DCS are excellent, it does just seem to be the Spit that sounds like a high pitched lawnmower. ETA - just been in to a free flight... Increasing throttle from idle to 16+ boost makes a massive difference to external sounds, but almost no appreciable difference to in-cockpit sound Can’t see how that would be correct...! -
Spitfire cockpit model / textures, roughness , sound ?
rkk01 replied to Jexmatex's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Did you even read and understand my post? Or just jump in with (an offensive) response... After flying the FWs I was pretty shocked by the Mk IX cockpit sounds - just a high pitched lawnmower drone... I’m comparing to DCS Anton, Dora, 109-K and P-47... not just some whimsical rant Flyby is good and F2 is passable, but I can’t see (hear...!) why anyone would think the cockpit sounds were acceptable. CFS was a long time ago - memory and all that... and the standard sounds were rubbish... which is why there were sound packs released for various aircraft. I recall that the Dan Hopgood add ons were very good (at the time). Yes this is all subjective, but the CFS sound addon made the Spitfire sound like, well, a Spitfire. Using the same “sound like a Spitfire” criteria, I’m not sure that the DCS cockpit sounds meet that criteria... and no, I haven’t flown in a Spitfire... but don’t see how that has any relevance at all. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology cockpit sound and vision is just a click or two away!!! In fairness, I haven’t flown either of the Merlin engined aircraft for a while, and that unfamiliarity might be part of the problem. I was also in my 2.5 copy at the time and not 2.7 - not sure if there any differences etc -
Tempted to try a few of the campaigns in the DCS shop, but concerned that the ninja / UFO AI behaviour might be an issue... Are AI levels selectable? Conscious that there are different authors involved so it may vary...
-
Sounds to me like another example of the AI not being hampered by real world physics...???
-
Good to hear, and wow that’s going to be one good looking Mossie...! As above, all the existing images have looked fantastic using the existing model

Let’s hope not Presumably ED would have made sure that was all right before investing development time and money. Also, most businesses will avoid blatant lies... a contract of licence issue might have given rise to an “unforeseen delay” of some obfuscation, but I doubt they would have stated external model unless that was at least part of the delay
