Scenario: I drop any CBU (87, 97,103, 105) and egress to a safer area while I watch 'over my shoulder' to assess bomb damage. When the bomb-lets finally strike their targets my video shutters or freezes for a couple seconds then either resumes or crashes DCS. Last couple weeks it crashes more than resumes, about 75%. This was happening last year but one of the updates seemed to resolve this but now it's back again. I can't believe it's my set up or hardware listed below. Anybody experiencing this also and maybe got a clue what I should check. Thanks in advance. ---------------------- System Info: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit MOBO: Asus B85 Pro Gamer Processor: Intel® Core i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz Memory: 32768MB RAM SSD Model: SanDisk SDSSDXPS480G Total Space: 457.2 GB Video Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Video Dedicated Memory: 8119 MB Monitor Model: LG ULTRAWIDE Monitor Id: GSM59F1 Native Mode: 2560 x 1080(p) (60.000Hz) Output Type: HDMI DirectX Version: DirectX 12 USB Hardware: TrackIR5 TM HOTAS Stick & THrottle TN Cougar MFCD Saitek Cessena Footpedals Razer Orbweaver

Altitude & Airspeed info after missile strike After being hit by a missile or AAA fire and losing various systems, on some occasions I am left with no digital or analog information regarding my altitude or airspeed. On some occasions I can use the Radar Altimeter (AHCP) at low enough altitudes for approach but still have no idea of my present airspeed. Obviously the situation is further complicated at night when 'eyeballing' isn't reliable. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm flying or falling and don't want to give up much altitude to find out. If my airspeed is NOT available on my Airspeed Indicator (analog) or my HUD (digital), is there another cockpit location for this vital info?

Specifically what kind of throttle do you have....are you talking about an external unit like a Thrustmaster HOTUS? If so, then BSS Sniper is spot on. The grey Throttle Friction Control slider is not used and easily assigned in DCS. Certainly makes locating/identifying targets much easier.

Does anyone know if you can change/personalize the radio msg text colors in a LUA (perhaps)? I have some eye issues often affected by color contrast and would like to try changing the text color to find a good personalized match, maybe even an orange or red.

Made my first attempt at AAR today...
AvgWhiteGuy replied to MustanGrande's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Guys, I'm totally lost on this, can't keep my bird stable enough to get close. I wonder whether I missed a step along the way. Is it best to learn some formation flying before even trying to do this? If so, can anyone recommend a simple MIZ to learn and get some experience on formations to get me to the next level? -
Looking for easy but fun missions/ campaigns
AvgWhiteGuy replied to ebabil's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I'm certainly no expert as well and, in fact only fly solo missions right now until I gain more advanced systems knowledge and comm experience. I think the first questions I would have for you (or anyone who fit your description and intents) are; What level of experience and knowledge of the systems do you have? I'll assume by your visable profile you can handle the aircraft (Startup, Taxi, Takeoff, basic VFR, Landing). What about the Radios, can you work between the different VHF AM and FM radios to contact and interact between the various resources available? What about the CDU, can you navigate and create waypoints, markpoints? Can you accept external JTAC intel and manually enter data relating to Bullseye and MGRS coordinates, and then fly to those points? If you can do those things perhaps consider several of these missions: JTAC Live Range (by Speedbrake, available @ DCS UserFiles - Downloads - Free) JTAC Night Range (by Speedbrake, available @ DCS UserFiles -Downloads - Free) A-10C JTAC Missions (by Speedbrake, available @ UserFiles - DCS Downloads - Free) I liked these because they're short, employ the weapons I enjoyed and introduced JTAC to me. I also appreciated them because it was a starting point to learn about editing the missions to add other variables such as 'Unknown Bad Guys', day/night, weather, etc. Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS (by Habu23, available @ DCS UserFiles - Downloads - Free) https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/201633/?sphrase_id=5654720 For the more experienced, this one is a blast because there are random taskings you get assigned to once you get to one of 4 IPs. After completing the task you return to the IP and are assigned another tasking. Although it is a multiplayer mission, you can do it on your own in the privacy of your own war room. No Air Refueling required but it is available if you want to take that step. Watch your weapon loadouts and fuel; your friends need help and you're the man (or woman) they depend on! Good luck, enjoy! -

@Wrench....thanks for that little tidbit of info. It's always frustrated when I forget to change it in the mission. This makes too much sense !!

Mission author Help needed, AI getting smarter?
AvgWhiteGuy replied to AvgWhiteGuy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
@MadDog-IC, thanks for the info, definitely seems like the recent upgrade change things. Can you direct me to the best way to roll back to previous version? I'm currently on 1.5.5 -
Radio Messages to Wingmen Appear Black
AvgWhiteGuy replied to nihalmurth's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
@Gliptal...you seem to be a great resource; I'm about to try your [A-10C][sP] Warthog Proficiency mission set. Look forward to it. Regarding the 'Radio Msg Blacked Out' is there way to alter the text color via LUA? I have some eye issues often affected by color contrast and would like to try changing the text color to find a good personalized match. Age has not been easy :) -
Could any of you folks building missions enlighten me on how/where/why there seems to be a degraded effectiveness of the AI flights in prosecuting their assigned mission targets? The example of this is "Arty Hunt - Tigerrrr - 16-08-2011" which I have written about before. Six months ago I took the liberty of reassigning my flight (only) from Tbilisi-Lochini to Kobuleti to reduce the initial flight time. The F/A-18 SEAD flight out of Tbilisi arrived first and did its thing; killing off the serious Radar SAM threats 90%+ of the time (there are 4 of them), leaving me to deal with the IR Sams and other air defense. Since this year (2017) it seems as the SEAD ain't quite as effective and rarely complete their mission; they might hit 1 of the 4 targets and more than 50% of the time they get hit and don't successfully kill any of their assigned targets. I'm also perplexed on how a Tor SA-15 is suddenly reaching me from 9 miles out at a altitude of 23,000ft!!:helpsmilie: Is there something in the mission setup that can cause this sudden change of effectiveness in the AI flights?

Callum, a good purchase or gift you have there; makes the SIM so much more enjoyable and realistic. As Boris mentioned, you will want to to use the joystick HAT for Trim. If you have a TrackIR no need to use the keyboard for your views. If you have a TrackIR here's a couple other things you may want to consider; a) I use the Joystick Paddle Switch (big pinky switch) for centering the TrackIR b) use the Throttle Friction Control on the right side next to the APU On/Off as a Zoom view in the Game Settings. I'm certainly no pro at this but I've basically eliminated all regular keyboard input by using the HOTAS combined with a Razer Orbweaver 20key keypad. Enjoy

Cold starts seem REALLY, REALLY cold.
AvgWhiteGuy replied to AvgWhiteGuy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Things get stranger by the day... @metzger suggested checking the 'synchronize controls at startup'. Options > Misc > Synchronize Cockpit Controls with HOTAS at MIssion Start That was checked so I unchecked it. That seems to have eliminated the problem with no response from TM HOTAS throttle at engine startup but it also affected the initial recognition of the Boat Switch position when using the TGP.... a minor setback. More interesting in this whole learning process; that had some affect on the whole process of 'motoring'. Prior to this I was got no response from the HOTAS Throttle > ENG OPER > MOTOR switch. If it stirred the engine I never saw it. Now it spins it up a bit, I switch it back to NORMAL, let the engine spin down a little, then roll the throttle over the hump. It lights up and works beautifully. Not sure that I would add that to the Cold Start regimen but it does add another dimension. The following makes no sense; all was working good and had 3 great flights today BUT I had main gear tire blowouts on takeoff twice today; that never happened before to me. What will these guys think of next (gotta love it!!) -
Cold starts seem REALLY, REALLY cold.
AvgWhiteGuy replied to AvgWhiteGuy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
This is getting more interesting..... First, can anyone agree that this issue I described at the beginning is relatively new? I explicitly recall working on startups 6 months ago and in Nov 2016 I was consistently requesting taxi clearance in less than 7 minutes. I never recall having this issue of rolling over Start hump and not getting immediate results from the engines. Secondly, if 'motoring the engines' is a logical procedure, can someone explain exactly how it is done & for how long? Do you get some feedback when you 'motor', is it immediate? Do you motor for xx seconds then roll the throttle over the hump? Do you motor for xx seconds then switch back to Normal, and then roll the throttle over the hump? I've tried various procedures today and can't find anything consistent. Please continue with this edumacation for the less gifted -
I've got LG34 UntraWide screen and have problems with the camera reading/responding the LEDs when I'm looking high or over the shoulder. It gets really frustrating in low altitude combat environments when I'm trying to catch a view for damage assessment or find where those dirty bastards are hitting me from after an attack. Was hoping that someone that has one of these monsters could share an effective profile and maybe any tips regarding the camera location. I have heard about placing it in the top center of the monitor and others suggested top but a little to the left. Don't want you to reveal the 'keys to the kingdom', but these immersive UltraWides seem significantly different than a standard monitor and I would appreciate tips/suggestions,etc.

I've been using a variation of cold starts over the last year and I'm quite mentally comfortable starting my Hog cold without a checklist and being ready to Taxi in less than 8 minutes. But recently I'm finding that the cold Engine Start requires me to repeatedly lift and move the Thrustmaster Throttle (right or left) to the Idle position several times before that engine begins to spool up. Sometimes it's the Left, sometimes the Right engine needs a couple tries before spooling. Sometimes once I have an engine running stable and I attempt to start the second engine I hear a specific 1-2 sound (maybe machanical/pneumatic) as the other engine begins to spool....sometime there is no sound. In the end, I generally can have almost all aircraft systems (including NAV alignment) up and running before I've got one engine up. Is this common to you folks as well? If the APU is running stable at 100%, and all switches are in the correct position, what can be causing this delay in Engine Start? In the event I am using someone else's Mission, is it possible that the author has introduced this 'challenge'? Does it matter which engine I start first? Anyone got a clue on this, appreciate the help (and any explanation you might share)

Strange graphics & tone during flight.
AvgWhiteGuy replied to AvgWhiteGuy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
@PocketSized...I didn't notice any spiking at all during the session and I certainly hope I wouldn't get lag considering my I'm running Win10 machine with 32G RAM, a brand new GTX1070 (8G) graphics card and the game is running on a 340G SSD. As for the tone....it's very similar to what TicTac mentioned BUT it was solid and still sounding when I turned all radios off. In fact I turned off everything that I could during flight (except Battery, Inverter, AC Generators) and it was still on. The only thing that has changed in my system is that I activated my Win10Pro 64 OS with a new license. Now I wonder whether I should try the The DCS Updater GUI Utility that Skatezilla has offered. Other than that the next step would be reinstall DCS. Comments, Suggestions? -
I was flying the A-10C in the 'Hand of God' by EasyEB the other night and several times while at altitude, I saw a DCS logo on a black background appear for just a flash while looking out from the cockpit to the left side at around 8 to 11 o'clock. There may have been more occasions but it could have been missed by a blink of the eye, I only saw it 3 times in about 20 minutes. Then there was a tone I've never heard before, a constant sound that did not appear to be a warning alarm. It sounded like a tone generated during a hearing test or the broadcast termination tone at the end of a day on old (real old) US TV channels back before cable (for those that old like me). I looked all through the cockpit and there was no negative influences in the cockpit controls, flight surfaces, Warning Panel....no indication anywhere. It sounded during consistent level flight at about 220-250 knots. I tried the L/G Warn Silence to no avail. I turned off all my radios and kept turning things off until it stopped. No help there trying to determine the source. I restarted everything again and it was all quiet for several minutes before sounding again. Then it was a 'on for a while / off for a while tone' until I finally landed without incident. The tone was not sounding during the post-flight taxi, cool down and shutdown procedure. The aircraft performed perfectly and I could not determine the cause of this tone. Has anyone experienced either of these? My DCS system is fully updated to the latest release within the last 10 days (Oct21016) and my rig far exceeds any minimum requirements. Feedback, answers, suggestions...............?

QuiGon.....thanks, you were correct. I don't know how this was turned off through an update but all good :)

Radio Comms Text Don't want to hijack this but was trying to figure out what happened to the radio text displayed on the upper left corner of screen. All comms works fine but somehow I lost that feature and it makes it a little harder to deal with JTAC or airfield controllers. Upper right side is fine. Anybody know what/where the setting is for that?

I was hoping someone here could help me sort out my little audio problem/desire, I've tried before to solve this and I'm not even sure where to start. It doesn't seem that difficult or complex ..... except to me :( This is NOT a DCS issue; merely a request for you folks that have more experience in building and dialing in your own systems for the shear pleasure of better sound. What I simply want to be able to do is drive the sound through the HDMI cable to the LCD Display (using it's build-in speakers) while simultaneously driving it out through the MOBO audio ports to an amplifier and/or speaker/mic headset. Currently if I connect the speaker/mic headset (dual plus) to the Line Out port on the MOBO I get sound through the headset but all sound to the HDMI is silenced. One reason is to be able to take off the headset during refuel/rearm/repairs but still enjoy the 'environment' while I fetch a refreshing beverage and stretch my legs :) I want to be able to use the Volume, Balance, Bass & Treble of the mini amplifier to provide a better sound quality for the various sources and still enjoy the 'in your face' sound from the monitor's speakers. Ultimately I would like to be able to control the volume of all the various output devices even if that means I need some additional minor hardware adapter(s) .....but that for later if need be. I have the following if this helps: Asus B85-Pro Gamer MOBO 32G RAM LG 34UM68 21:9 UltraWide® Full HD IPS LED Monitor MSI GeForceGTX 1070 Video Card (this is badass!!) Windows 10 64bit Pro O/S I appreciate any help you folks can provide. I really don't understand all this audio stuff but willing to listen and learn.

Hidden Insurgent in Mission Editor???
AvgWhiteGuy replied to AvgWhiteGuy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
@ Galwran.... "It is really stupid that they are hidden on the mission editor and can be only found again by a menu. Instead they should be just greyed or something like that." I wouldn't call it stupid, I think it adds to the reality and intrigue of the whole 'simulation'. No military intel is ever really complete; there are alway unknowns in every mission. If you 'cheat' by checking out all the details of the dynamic map in the ME you know where they are, where they're moving to and the relative timing of each unit. That wouldn't be realistic at all. These 'hidden' units and their movements/timing is much more realistic and forces you to plan a strategy with the recognition that 'not everything is as it seems'. This is the real deal in conflict. This particular mission is the first time I've seen that and I think it's brilliant. I'd love to see more Single Player missions done using this feature because....sh?t happens! Is there a way to to see the dynamic activity in the ME to test or validate the mission; especially if it could run at X accelerated speed? I was messing with this mission last night and could only validate the dynamics by flying it. The Mission Planner only shows the static objects which seems to me to be good recon and intel ... fair enough without being considered cheating to see this overview. But building a cool mission with 'smart triggers' that can evaluate actions as they occur and make 'if this happens then do that' decisions would change the whole concept and strategy of both the author/builder and the player/opponent.....an even more realistic scenario of conflict.
