Und schon wieder gibt es Neuigkeiten aus der 1./JG71 "Richthofen": Wir haben mit dem nicht so früh erwarteten Erscheinen der Cold War Germany map - wie sollte es anders sein - heute einen Wechsel der Homebase vollzogen und waren damit nur für sehr kurze Zeit in Norwegen unterwegs. In Analogie zum GAFTIC schicken wir für Tiefflugtraining aber sicher mal wieder ein Kommando nach Norden zum "GAFTIN". Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass unsere natürliche Heimat Wittmund EDNT noch (man kann ja mal hoffen?!) nicht in der neuen CWG map enthalten ist und wir für den aktuell in der Karte vorhandenen F-4F Fliegerhorst Pferdsfeld (noch?) keine Karten haben, verlegt die 1./JG71 "Richthofen" bis auf Weiteres nach Büchel EDSB und fliegt im süddeutschen Raum der Bonner Republik ihre Einsätze. Heute fand der erste Flug im Bereich Büchel statt. Da die Karte aber erst recht spät gestern veröffentlicht wurde und zudem aktuell ein bug die F-4 plagt, war unser erster "Fam Flight" auf der neuen map bei uns entgegen unserer sonstigen Vorgehensweise "mit heißer Nadel gestrickt" und etwas improvisiert, und dennoch ergab es einen schönen Flugabend, der zudem durch externes ATC von Marco (Büchel TWR) und Sven (Büchel Radar) von den Digital Controllers wie immer sehr bereichert wurde. Während einer unserer Anwärter mutig genug war, mit der F-4 auf Strecke zu gehen und IFR nach Wunstorf zu fliegen, hat eines unserer Staffelmitglieder heute ausnahmsweise mal einen F-16-Flug zusammen mit einem externen Gast durchgeführt. Die beiden haben eine low-level VFR Trainingsroute entlang des Rheins geflogen. Der StaKa (yours truly) war heute mal in Anbahnung unseres nächsten Ergänzungsprojekts (so viel sei verraten) als Heeresflieger unterwegs und hat einen sehr schönen VFR-Flug von Mendig über Koblenz, die Mosel Richtung Süden entlang bis nach Traben-Trabach, dann Richtung Westen zur A48, nach Norden bis November Büchel, einen low approach auf die 21 in Büchel, einen full pattern, hot refuelling auf der main apron, und VFR departure via November zurück nach Mendig gemacht. Dabei wurde die ganze Zeit mit einer Original-TPC aus dem Jahr 1979 - Ebay macht's möglich - navigiert, was in dieser Ecke der CWG map sehr gut geklappt hat. In den nächsten Tagen und Wochen wird der Fokus darauf liegen, unsere CWG Karte mit Lufträumen, Ranges und Navigationspunkten auf Stand der 1980er Jahre auszustatten und hier unsere Trainingsflüge durchzuführen, worauf wir uns sehr freuen: Die neue Karte ermöglicht erneut eine Quantensprung in der Qualität der Fliegerei in DCS in unserer Staffel. Am 12. April 2025 hat die 1./JG71 an der dritten REFORGER-Übung (live-fire exercise) "Steadfast Archer" teilgenommen. Beteiligt waren wieder mehrere internationale (Cold War-) Staffeln und ATC und TAC/C2 Personal von den Digital Controllers, insgesamt weit über 40 Personen. Das diesmalige REFORGER 2502 fand statt im nördlichen norwegischen Luftraum und hat für die "Erste" ca. 2,5 Flugstunden am Stück eingebracht. Die Übung startete von Bodoe (ENBO) aus und sah für fast alle Teilnehmer eine pre-strike Luftbetankung vor, bevor dann die verschiedenen CAP stations eingenommen bzw. die Bodenziele angesteuert wurden. Für die 1./JG71 galt es, wieder einmal im Zweitauftrag Jagdbomber unterwegs, eine SA-3-Stellung zu bekämpfen, was uns erfolgreich gelang. Flight Lead Alex hat die Formation im Tiefflug pünktlich zur befohlenen ToT über das Ziel gebracht. Nach einem pop-up dive-toss attack mit BL755 ging es dann im Tiefflug mit Überschallgeschwindigkeit aus dem Gefahrenbereich heraus zu einem post-strike AAR, wonach wir dann schließlich nach gut 2,5h wieder in Bodoe landeten. Nachfolgend ein paar Impressionen von der Übung:

Funny to see that this problem is ten years old already, probably more, since the release of the Huey. I guess only a few people ever notice this because they never sit in the co-pilot's seat. I admit I rarely do, but the other day, trying out multicrew in the Huey after some years, the issue of the limited zoom and the limited degree of movement became painfully aware to me again. I have to try the suggested .lua modification, but I fear it will break integrity check, won't it? @Flappie Would you put an adjusted zoom and more 6DoF room on the very, very, very long list of requested Huey improvements for the devs?

@The_Fragger Cold War Germany is on the doorstep, prime PAH-1 territory. Do you have any progress news?

Thank you, that's an excellent description of a realistic ground scenario in the area. Let's hope the map is that good that all the towns and roads are depicted. It reminded me of the fact that ED/Wags once investigated on SMEs for tanks to venture into that sim area, and it makes me want to see a significant improvement of Combined Arms in that area.

Looking at how the Syria map evolved in time, there is still a spark of hope for many of us who are missing several airbases...

Our squadron will use the several realistic airbases, airspaces and ranges on the CWG map to simulate realistic training flights. VFR and IFR navigation day and night, A2A in the TRAs, A2G on the ranges, some tango scrambles. We will also simulate EW training by recreating the Polygone Range in SW Germany. Also, some large-scale exercises like REFORGER and TLP with other squadrons, all in the correct and realistic training manner. We also have another project in the pipeline focussing more on the ground war and Army Aviation, and that will surely include Combined Arms a lot. There's also plenty of room for some (in this sim) soothing helicopter border-patrol flights on both sides of the fence if one doesn't like the doomsday scenario of WWIII. In our squadron we will not simulate WWIII. But there'll surely be a lot of all-out WWIII scenarios with a plethora of military cross-border missions carried out. The biggest advantage of this map is that it offers a lot of information on real-world airspaces, controlling agencies, frequencies and everything; there are tons of charts available (even if we have to dig a little bit in the archives for many bases). It is similar to NTTR in this regard, but offers a lot more airbases and a much more interesting scenery.

Possibly... fingers crossed.

Please consider adding Wittmund EDNT, Jever EDNJ, Oldenburg EDNO in phase 3. (Adding the civil airfield Wilhelmshaven EDWI would be a nice cherry on top, it's the largest civil aerodrome in the area and regularly saw GAF C-160 Transall practising short-field landings and takeoffs. Nowadays every now and then the occasional GNY Sea Lynx from ETMN Nordholz stops by)

@Flappie @BIGNEWY Tried multicrew in the Huey today after a few years, and unfortunately it is still not very good compared to newer modules. The most apparent bug was the start-up when my pilot started up the aircraft. He set up the aircraft, but the switch for the fuel pump wasn't synchronised. Only when I as the co-pilot also switched on the fuel pump, the engine would start. There were also some issues with the external lights not being synched, and later in the flight my pilot couldn't open his door while it visually opened for me. Track included (on Kola map, sorry, it was after all a simple multiplayer flight and not a dedicated bug-hunting flight, and naturally, the file is super-big. Hope it helps you guys. Is there a chance ED will bring Huey multicrew to a level that is comparable to the Apache? I once had an EGT runaway condition when I moved the throttle too fast; I think the Gazelle simulates engine damage (I once experienced it due to dust and no filter), so you might want to be careful with that technique

I can only imagine the TACANs and ILS' we've seen in the screenshots are some stand-ins and do not resemble the final product. It's hard to believe that Ugra goes all the way with this map and then in the end doesn't add era- and coalition-correct navaids. They certainly must now better, right? Having TACANs and instead of RSBN and PRMG in East Germany would be a major turn-off... I hope Ugra will adress this issue. I trust in them they will.

Same thing happens after a touch and go. Can't you just tell Jester to leave radar off until further notice after he gets the command "radar off!"? (Same issue applies to countermeasures dispensers btw)

Of course. I was referring to what we have in DCS right now, which is similar to the pre-ICE F-4F.

Correct. AIM-9L from 1983 onwards till the end. (And never ever any AIM-7! Sidewinders only.)
