It's really a question of personal preference. Most people who've used VR seem to prefer it, but there is a number of people who seem to have gone back to monitors. My current understanding: Monitors: Easier to drive, though I'm guessing that x3 4k monitors is going to require something quite beefy No need to wear/use a VR headset. For some, it's clearly not viable, or they just hate the comfort My assumption is less maintenance and tweaking VR: Cheaper if you go with say an Oculus 3 when compared to x3 decent monitors IMMERSION!!!!! As for using MFD panels whilst in VR, clearly, you're not going to be able to read them. There is new "passthrough" tech, which is getting better, but I get the impression that it's not really fully ready, and unless you're cockpit fully reflects the aircraft you're flying, I could see it being very confusing. For controls, that's a different matter. I've found that I've built up muscle memory pretty quickly on how to find the right button, switch and dial whilst in VR. To help on that a few things have helped: Some control panels (e.g. the WinWing units) have different switch types, which make it dead easy to feel the difference. Take a scan at the their Takeoff panel as an example You can buy add on silicon covers to go over the type of metal switches, to help pick out specific switches. I recently bought a bunch of 10 from Virpil for that purpose. You don't need them on every switch, just the ones to give you an understanding of where a specific known button is For buttons on say the Thrustmaster MFDs, I've added a small cut of velcro to 4 of the buttons, such that I can identify them by feel. I applied the fuzzy side to the middle button on each of the sides, and the sharper velcro side to the middle button on the top and bottom rows. Works a treat

As it happens I did a sightseeing tours mission yesterday and took an F1 BE for a 90 cruise around. The interior is mega hilly, with loads of ravines and rolling hills. Would be a brilliant place to setup an Afghan Mach Loop

Black Fri - Amazon - Crucial T705 - £189

LOL, I'm glad you prompted me, thanks. Sure enough, I needed to make a change within my BIOS, as it was running at Gen 4 speed. Updated and now have a test from Crystalmark with a read speed of 14485 and a write speed of 12589. Re-ran the boot test. 45 seconds. Probably worth assuming that there's a degree of error in maybe the config or similar. As you've rightly noted, each of the above was a single run, not multiple to create a statistical sample. -

Got to admit, just kind of threw it in, quick format, copied DCS, repaired DCS etc. It's definitely in the correct slot. I have an MSI 670e tomahawk. I did see that there's an app to check whether I'm using the correct settings, I'll go look for that now. As for the improvements, frankly, I'm not too bothered either way. It wasn't that expensive, we'll always need the space and at some point, there's a high chance that DCS will take advantage of it. -

Just booted up DCS using the Gen5. On the Samsung 990 Pro (Gen 4), it took 45 seconds. Now, 42 seconds. So a blazing fast improvement...NOT! The above boot up, used the same Saved Games folder, and was conducted as per the previous test, i.e. just after a restart of my PC, and with the same background software running, e.g. Oculus, Simshaker etc. Haven't tried it in game Being fair, can't say that I'm bothered. My son and I both have PCs and this frees up another 2TB unit that I can pass on to him when he's ready. -
Thanks. I've uninstalled Toolkit and have QV and eye tracking ticked within DCS.

Question on that subject. In XRtoolkit, it was possible to not only turn on/off Foveated rendering, but also to change the ratio of detail applied outside of the central and at the edge of the image, e.g. set it to 1/2 in the middle area and say 1/16th at the edge. How do we control that without XRtoolkit?

Oh yeah, sure. I've been making up a kneeboard with a suitable checklist. -
That’s a question for Microsoft, not ED

No similar issues here. Does it crash outside of DCS? You could test that by just using the desktop in VR for a while.

Try going into DCS and unticking FFB. When I did that, seemed to resolve it. Option B, switch to telemetry in the Moza cockpit software. My guess is that we're in early days and there's a few "areas of opportunity". Feels good in telemetry mode. The Spit is light and a bit mushy in normal flight, but then tightens up when performing Gs.

Latest software update to the Moza cockpit has just arrived. In addition to support for that well known Civ Sim, that's currently impossible to load, it also appears to have added: - Support for a well known WW2 combat sim that is currently being expanded to include early jets - An "expert" setting tab, allowing dead zones to be added - A "special" tab, that appears to allow "trim support for games that don't support FFB"

I watched Wag's video about the new deck handlers yesterday. That looks seriously cool, can't wait to try it. There was just one point that felt a bit jarring, i.e. the 180 degree teleport at the end of the video. Bearing in mind how awesome the rest way, it felt a bit out of place. My is that at some point it'll be possible to add the capability for deck crew to use one of the deck tractors to turn the aircraft around. I'm hoping that it might be a set of development down the line. Clearly it's hardy a priority item, but would be ace.

MOZA force feedback base AB9 How to get started?
Mr_sukebe replied to hannibal's topic in Input Devices
I so far it’s been extremely solid. Hasn’t crashed yet whilst I’ve been flying. -
Very relevant point, though it would be interesting to understand what reality is like, before going full on Hollywood

Great feedback, thanks

FFB is now here, if in early adoption and I have to say that I'm impressed. What struck me is that I'm looking at the variety of different settings that I could play with, and in most cases, I have no idea what they "should" feel like. Sure, we're read how a helicopters collective doesn't generally self centre, but that's only one part of it. If I think of say an F18, with fly by wire, would a pilot feel through the stick: changing stick forces dependent upon speed? I'm guessing that maybe a level of feedback is built into the stick What level of self centre exists? Do you feel the undercarriage, flaps, air brakes being deployed? Does a change to the trim of the aircraft, as a result of say the flaps change the feedback responses from the stick? Are there deliberate points where the force required on the stick has a step change, e.g. at 6g, to help avoidance of ripping off stores? Does dropping a bomb produce a feel to it? And that's just for the F18. There's going to be significant variances between aircraft. Does anyone have any suitable sources that we can draw on to collate this stuff? Moza have provided a set of profiles for some aircraft, but I've no idea if they're even in the right ballpark. My assumption is yes, but maybe it's all deliberately over done. I do wonder if we should pull together a matrix with the aircraft type as a row, and the columns capturing a level of feedback from say 1-10 for each of the variables that we can think of. Thoughts?

That does look lovely.

I believe that the Virpil firmware is applied to the controller board. In the Virpil world, that exists within the base, not the grip.
-
Doesn't seem currently possible to map even buttons to the analogue hat. I knew that before ordering, and have another analogue hat on my throttle, so doesn't really bother me if Moza take a while

7800X3D/9800X3D vs. 14900k - any benchmarks?
Mr_sukebe replied to Winger's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
you sure about that? I fly in VR with a 3080ti and task manager shill shows the primary core as being maxed out for my CPU. My assumption is that further splitting of CPU loads across additional cores will help. -
I use a Virpil Alpha on my AB9. The analogue axes don’t currently work via the AB9. The wheel brake axis currently operates as a button. Moza have stated that the capability to use the axes will be added, but there’s been no timelines stated as yet.
