With the announcement of the free Marianas Map (REF), those of us who are interested in WW2 air combat are no doubt thinking about how this map could be used for Pacific Theatre scenarios. There are some US assets: troops and tanks, landing boats and ships. There are some US aircraft too: the P51D, B17, P47D (was it used in the Pacific?), and the upcoming F4U Corsair. But what of the Japanese? There has been a hint of an AM6 Zero ( @ 4m29s). But that's it. Of course development is expensive, so it is not as if ED will suddenly launch into any major development effort on Pacific WW2. But perhaps 1-2 items could be added to the WW2 assets pack, that could be used in the Marianas? If so, what would be the minimum addition needed to the WW2 Assets Pack to let us fly WW2 Pacific?

I went to post this separately, but found this thread, so I'll put it here instead... About a year ago, developer Coyote was doing some research on the weapon systems of the F-8. There were numerous posts on the forums. Examples: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3741707&postcount=249 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3742815&postcount=251 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3744106&postcount=266 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3747055&postcount=275 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3747968&postcount=280 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3759613&postcount=285 Shortly thereafter, the announcement of the A-8 and F-8 appeared. Nineline wrote: Ref: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3774154&postcount=180 (25-Jan-2019) Since then, the A-8 has been released, but the F-8 is no longer mentioned. What is the status of the FW 190 F-8 for DCS now?

Point taken. That said, it doesn't need a full-blown Cold/DangerousWaters module to get started. Giving the S-100 Schnellboot compatibility with Combined Arms would be the sort of start I had in mind. That means... Ability to use the Tactical Commander role to take control of the boot Ability to drive/navigate the boat Ability to go to the different gun stations and fire the guns (especially against incoming DH-98 Mosquitoes). Ability to launch torpedoes against enemy ships. This sort of thing does not sound so dissimilar from the Combined Arms capability of some of the existing surface-to-air missile units that are already in DCS. The difference being the sea-based nature and replacing the missile-mechanism with a torpedo one. Integration of WW2 and Combined Arms has been reasonably weak so far. This does strike me as single implementation, albeit somewhat more complicated, but with a large impact on the WW2 scenarios that could be implemented (incl. pre-invasion scenarios, e.g. Battle of Lyme Bay, link)

2021 (and earlier) DCS Newsletter Discussion Thread

Forget the supercarrier... please turn that S-100 Schnellboot into a full DCS player module. PLEASE!! :worthy: -
Will anyone be producing a collective for the oh-58?
xvii-Dietrich replied to BlacleyCole's topic in DCS: OH-58 Kiowa
Wow! Well, I really hope they go through with that. I'm very interested in such a system. -
+100 I'm totally with you on that! Forget that supercarrier... the DCS S-100 Schnellboot module is what we need!!!! :)

Verily. It was my mistaken assumption, based on their coincidental appearance in the same thread. Excellent point. In which case I would certainly add that I would be happy to pay for additional updates to the C101. I have had the C101 for nearly a year now (I got it the day it was released on Steam), and even from soon after I got it, I've been very satisfied with it and have recommended it to others (ref). Since then, there have been loads of updates, new keys, new features and, most recently, new sounds... some of which might be argued as unnecessary or unwanted. I disagree; I think they are great and am very grateful to the developers for their inclusion. There are a lot of other modules in the DCS ecosystem which people have complained about being partly-finished. The continued development, enhancement and dedication to the C101 is something that is exceptional. Don't you agree? So I would certainly applaud the AvioDev for their devotion to the aircraft and would enthusiastically encourage them to continue enhancing it. And, yes, I'd be more than happy to pay for such improvements. The Aviodev C101 is great. :)

I was also curious about this. I have tried to find some pictures (attached). For the most part, the lateral tilt (which some are calling cant) seems to be about 2 degrees at most. It is certainly nowhere near 7 degrees. Perhaps you meant forward tilt? But I agree that the UH-1H and Mi-8 do not seem to have any lateral tilt. However, I've not found any definitive sources either. Anyone?

+1 for all updates to the C-101. And, if there are texture improvements for the cockpit, new paintschemes (like the one in the sounds video), or other visual improvements, then it definitely gets support from me. :) Somewhat incongruous, no? ;)

Just to the east of Bernay there is a large terrain anomaly, which causes a huge wall. The position of it is marked with the blue bullseye marker on the map in the screenshot.

Conches airfield is missing spawn points 01 to 19 inclusive. (Only spawn points 20 to 24 are present).
-
There are no ATC radio frequencies at Conches airfield. This is both in the simulator, and in the mission editor. To reproduce the fault, open the mission editor on the Normandy map, click on, say, Evreux and Tower Frequency will appear in the right hand side bar with four frequencies. Now do this on Conches, and there is nothing.

This screenshot has been positioned to show the area that is mostly represented now, as well as the locations of the new airfields in the south and east. The map also goes up the coast a bit (up to about Le Treport), but it is not so usable if you go north too far from the Seine valley. There are also some airfields in the UK, really just as staging points, and not really battle areas. After all, it is the Normandy map, not Sussex map. ;)

For those on the sideline about buying Normandy...
xvii-Dietrich replied to Mr_sukebe's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
I would second that. It is not only a big improvement for the WW2 scene, but adds a lot of potential for helicopter operations. -
Definitely a very useful resource!! We did a study on the DCS Normandy map area a while ago, including collecting a lot of online links. If anyone is interested, see the "References" section of this post: http://stormofwar.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=6813

wishlist: channel island grass airstrip
xvii-Dietrich replied to twistking's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney all had airfields historically, but they were obstructed by the time of the invasion (and the Normandy map is set in about August 1944). Ref: https://www.ww2.dk/Airfields%20-%20France.pdf That said, I am all for having more options, so definitely yes to an airstrip there. After all, we can always obstruct them ourselves with mission editor items. -
Very very minor bug - Mont St. Michel surfaces
xvii-Dietrich replied to Merlins51's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I found the same on Mont St. Michel. It has been reported (and acknowledged). Ref: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=258301 -
Thanks Ugra for the update!! I really appreciate the seven extra airfields in the south and east.... Essay, Argentan, Conches, etc.. That makes such a difference to scenario design having more than one option for the Luftwaffe, esp. for battles around Falais. I also like the detail on the small fields, like Essay. They have a lot of character. Have also explored the updates on the Channel Islands (not mentioned in the changelog), which are neat. Still exploring... but so far, very good. A delightful, unexpected surprise.

[REPORTED] No landing contact on Mont Saint-Michel
xvii-Dietrich posted a topic in Bugs and Problems
Thanks Ugra Media for adding the XVII Fliegerkorps' personal castle. ;) We did notice, however, that it was not possible to make contact with the helipad. And a small fire then broke out. Basically, it looks like the contact area does not match with the textures, so even when landed and the engine is off, the helicopter is still "floating". But, otherwise, thanks for the update, and dibs on the castle. :D -
According to Steamspy, DCS World is in the 1M-2M user category. Ref: https://steamspy.com/app/223750 Of course, this is Steam only, and it includes all "free only" players (who don't buy any modules, but just fly the free-to-play version). Nevertheless, a lot of people have tried it out via Steam, which is nice.

DCS: Mi-24P - What we know + Discussion
xvii-Dietrich replied to MrDieing's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
Fair point. I partially mis-understood what you were getting at. Totally agree! The Mi-8 + Mi-24 pair show up a LOT in real-life operations. It will be the best helicopter synergy in DCS for the foreseeable future. -
I like these ideas. Especially the crew winch, which would be neat for plucking downed pilots out of the sea (this mechanism really needs to exist, given the carrier-based nature of DCS!). Oh, and so we can operate it off the upcoming supercarrier module, can we have a fictional US navy-grey and US coastguard red-white paintscheme addeds too? Thanks! :)

DCS: Mi-24P - What we know + Discussion
xvii-Dietrich replied to MrDieing's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
What? It hardly blew in from nowhere. The has been on the cards for at least two-and-a-half years now. First rumours in July 2017 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3205018&postcount=11 External 3D model well advanced in December 2017 https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=197704 Plans announced in October 2019 https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=252134 There was an in-flight video from October 2019 Contracts signed, licences obtained, formally announced, December 2019 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=4137929&postcount=229 This is not a surprise. Polychop have only 2 modules, and have been working mostly on the OH58 in recent months (if not years). In the meantime, ED have had the F-18, F-16, FW190 A8, core assets, WW2 assets, supercarrier, Yak52, and Mi24, ... at least. PS: There is also a Bo-105 under development for DCS (although currently stalled as they need a coder for the flight model). I think the Mi-24 will be out first though. -
Fully electric DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver first flight
xvii-Dietrich replied to Weta43's topic in Military and Aviation
It's notable that the first electric aeroplane is a seaplane. Seems to be even more challenging to get up to take off velocity from water than wheels or a catapult. I love the DHC-2. It is an amazing little plane. It was used militarily too (*hint*). ;) -
In Norway, there is a tradition for the airforce to fly a particular formation along the country each December. It is called Julestjerne (= Yule Star). It is also known as julestjerneflyging or Julestjerna. Today (Friday 13-Dec-2019), there were 23 F-16s in the formation that flew over where I work. I've never seen so many at once! :) I managed to get a a photograph (not so good, given the camera in my mobile-telephone). Try doing that, all you DCS F-16 pilots! ;) Also, a bit further up the sund, they dispensed flares, causing quite a cascade of light. it looked very nice. (And the sound of the flyby was rather neat too!) As I mentioned, it is an old tradition. Here is an old video from the 60's: (the formation is about 25 seconds in). As far as I know, it has been done with F-35s, F-86s and F-16s (as per what I saw today). Not sure about other types... maybe the F-5.
