  1. I would assume it has something to do with profit sharing. Instead of paying ED directly for their product you're paying them through a third party and that money goes through a few twists and turns before it ends up in the pockets of the people who did 99.9999999% of all the work. Of course I have NO idea how Steam and game companies work out that, I'm not a lawyer nor do I care to get into the legal crap associated with it. I just know there is a reason and it's in ED's best interest. We the consumer can a) wait for a potential release on steam some time after, b) buy directly from ED (which has worked out pretty well for most people) and c) wait for the DVD release. The consumer doesn't really have a say where a company decides to distribute their products, we have a say in whether or not we purchase said products. If Steam is a huge success with Black Shark perhaps that's all that needs to be "investigated" who knows, how can you not understand the logic behind waiting to see?
  2. I'd say 98% of the sound was "youtubed" as I like to say. The high and low FREQ's get CRUUUUUSHED when video's are uploaded to youtube. There's a whole RAINBOW of sounds we completely miss out on. Just wait until you get the sim, CRANK the volume on your speakers (drop the bass a bit on your sub)...you'll see ;). Until then though it's going to be hard to really get a sense of the sound on producer notes. To comment on that video...AWESOME video, thanks for posting that!
  3. The 10 additional Euro's is probably the "steam cut" hehe. It would be "cheaper" to buy directly from the company vs a third party no doubt. If it was exclusive to STEAM then maybe the cost would be lower. I could be completely ignorant here, but I wonder how popular flight sims, especially the study sim ones are pirated. I mean compared to the cost of a HOTAS setup, Tracker IR and a decent gaming rig, you'd think $20-$50 for a sim isn't all that bad. I would expect the "pirated users" are the ones who even if the price was right wouldn't bother to pay when they can have a hacked copy for free. I could be wrong...I've been known to be wrong a few times ;).
  4. Trust me man, the Intellectual property of a product plus plus the salaries of the highly specialized engineers, programmers etc that work on the project is about 95% of what you pay. That would be highly unfair to the developer who puts in years of work only to have %50 of their revenue lost to a distribution company. Also note, most big game developers run on the feature film philosophy now a days. The financial success of a game is determined in how well the game sells in the first X amount of days after release. After those few precious days sales will drop and you can say the climax of the revenue stream has faded. I LOATH this philosophy, because I hate the whole "PRE ORDER THIS NOW" bull S*IT. We're living in the "blockbuster" age of gaming. Simulation series for the most part don't really fall into that catagory as MUCH (I don't know how the sales list looks for Black Shark or F.C 2). They make their sales over a longer period of time, it's the older school philophy of the gaming industry. :)
  5. What is it exactly about STEAM you guys are so fond of? And please don't use "no limited activations" as one reason, because that's probably the most grossly misunderstood part of the D2D from ED. I'm curious
  6. +1 as well... Thank you! I know searching the internet for these things is easy, but it's always nice when someone else does it before you even think to look. Anybody else want some rep...i'm feeling generous ;)
  7. Never made republics connection to the A10 and P47 until now (my bad). I'm actually partial to the thunderbolt 2 name vs the warhog now....being a big fan of the p47. )
  8. I don't know how I did it, but all of the sudden I woke up one day and could pilot the ARMA heli's with extreme precision and accuracy. I only use keyboard and the mouse when I'm fine tuning my aiming on strafing runs. (Hotas is more pain than it's worth, not implemented properly although that would help). It's definitely counter intuitive, it is very basic, just have to worry about a few keys and if used in the right order you can do no wrong hehe. Vertical takeoff's as Grimes & Digital Steve have mentioned are horrible, but I never really fly those. Heli's and that's pretty much it for me.
  9. I am certainly NOT interested....... ;) jk +1 for all the readable goodies!
  10. Thanks for the links! Great reading material!
  11. I think the head only animates left to right now right? I doubt they're going to spend time on more elaborate animations. Ramp starts I would assume would have every pilots head down, most would miss the more elaborate animations anyway making the attention to that detail unoticed. It would be cool though.
  12. I don't think it's fake, - I don't see the point of faking this...too much work for what? - Wide angle lens in cockpit distorts the image, probably what hides the engines in the back.
  13. APU sound is the same, I actually came across it in a sound library at work. I'm sure the turbofan spin up is very different but impossible to really get a sense of because of the mix (matts voice is dominant) and the nature of YouTube to crush the living snot out of sound frequencies. GA and a few other testers have noted the beautiful sound upon startup. :D
  14. !!! lol Before the internet and forums though the "women" (customers) didn't really have a say in anything. Direct links to developers and lots of pre-release information/screenshots/video's have really changed the game from the developers perspective and has made the consumer WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more demanding. I can't help but think....for F's sake, there are currently NO developers developing anything even CLOSE to what these guys (TEAM ED) have given us. In 2 years we've seen Black Shark, FC 2.0 and soon to be A-10C. Where is Lead Pursuit? Where is Fighter Ops? Jet Thunder? Even SOW (which is showing some progress with some updates at least). As a community we're backed into a corner, with the amount of fighter planes in all nations in action/out of action whatever, it will be almost impossible to satisfy everyone. The products we are getting though are top notch and from a FM, cockpit etc...they're unrivaled. I'm sure the multirole fighter is on ED's radar. Perhaps the steps taken in A-10C will make the EXTREMELY COMPLEX development for a multirole fighter that much easier. I can't even think how complicated modeling A/G radar with DCS fidelity (currently no A/G radar in any ED products by the way) and then doing A/A on top of that, then adding the varied flight dynamics of supersonic flight. Flighters are complicated as hell...that's why only the best get to fly them. I don't know why more people don't just enjoy what's given, we've never had the chance to fly from our basements, mancaves, living rooms a true simulator experience for...what? $50??? Longbow II was $69.99 when it was released over 10 years ago. Anyway sorry to go on and on, I dont' want to be a dick, I Just don't understand the logic of some :)
  15. Black Shark manual came out before release in PDF version didn't it? Printed definitely came out after. I would assume the same just because of third party assembling/printing/binding etc.

    JASF

When I first saw that I thought the good old days of Janes were back....it is....but bette than ever ;). Sayyy no mooooore
  17. Starting up manually for me totally adds to the immersion...I'm also too lazy to look up what the manual startup shortcut is ;). My preference is inside a virtual cockpit as nice as black shark and a10 I will always opt for the manual startup. Pushing buttons that make sounds and spin dials gives me a sense of POWER!!!! ;)
  18. There's a screen shot lying around someplace of the cockpit with a green double arrow head pointing to the lower side of the screen. It was estimated and it's probably a good estimate that this is an arrow showing you what switch it's referring to. It was stated that the training segments will be interactive so there will be some aides for sure. Just don't expect to learn all 95% of this puppy from visual aides etc...studying will also be required :) School starts in September ;)...(not officially...ever so possibly)..i'm fine with a winter semester or holiday release as well) :pilotfly:
  19. All that and more will most likely be explained in the manual/interactive training in game. They're all very good questions, but that's where the "ground school" element comes into play. This as with black shark is a general overview and you're not expected to pass a test or gain all the knowledge required for a startup procedure. The same video would probably be over an hour ;). Youtube has a 10 minute policy and there are a LOT of systems that have yet to be covered such as navigation, weapons deployment etc. :smartass: EDIT: Looks like some bubble pointers with switches Matt is referring to are now marked on youtube. The first time I watched these weren't there. That might help with seeing what's being pushed.
  20. Wow, I wasn't expecting that SO quickly! Thank you VERY much Wags! You my day!
  21. True that, I'm a little more sensitive to aviation stuff anyway as it's my first and only TRUE love.
  22. Perhaps a good majority of arma players play arma because they don't or haven't had the chance to fire a weapon. Especially military grade assault rifles with holographic sites. Arma is not reality, far from it, closer than COD. How one fires a gun in arma will hardly translate to firing the same weapon in real life. Muscle memory and depth perception are hard to simulate on a computer...among other things. Obviously it must be a coding or game engin issue otherwise I'm sure they'd fix it.
  23. Strange i've never noticed that playing...probably because my game time is limited so when I do play I'm fairly light to judge things ;). I point at a target and shoot for the most part that target goes down. Maybe my aim is faulty so the two negatives make a positive ;)
  24. Tv spots, specifically for a study flight sim would be ineffective for the cost involved. First off tv commercials are pretty much made for women now a days. It's also very hard to sell a aim like this to a new audience in 30 seconds, hawx, cod yes, because it's all very shallow cinematic experience, just quickly cut a bunch of explosions together with a hot sound track. I think producer notes in themselves are an amazing forum of advertisement with hardly any cost to ED. There will most likely be some form of formal ads closer to release. (reviews, web page previews, gamer magazine features etc.)
  25. They don't have faulty sights per say, it just doesn't have the paralax effect, I don't know one shooter that has the effect implimented. You have a red dot sight, but you can't move your head horizontally and watch the red dot disappear inside the scope.
