  1. Oh well ... looks like I'll be using DCS for the occasional quake-fest and honing flying skills. Thank god there's extremely active WWII presences elsewhere in the meantime.
  2. @Echo38 .. if I could I'd rep you! Thanks for the explanation, I think you did an exceptional job! However, are you also saying that the P51 as modeled shouldn't (in your opinion) have the turning authority it currently enjoys?
  3. Ah forgive my ignorance .. I wasn't aware of a functional distinction in that I thought the combat flap setting on the P-51 was a legitimate method to enhance maneuvering authority?
  4. First of all, I just want to put it out there that I love all the current WWII prop planes we have in DCS. Now I'll just throw in my observation based on nothing more than my experience flying these wonderful DCS crates ... IMO the Bf109 has superior turn performance because its a smaller circle, a better rate of turn and because it regains energy easily after a tight turn. Note that while the Bf109 has slats, the P51 has maneuver flaps ... IMO the P51 with 1 notch of flaps doesn't turn as tight nor as quickly though it does a pretty darn good job ... and the main drawback is that it's a whole lot harder to regain energy unless the P51 has plenty of altitude to begin with. But then the Mustang isn't a turn and burn plane either. So to end of my subjective take on this ... I disagree that the P51 has comparable turn performance ... :) I recall reading a quote from Adolf Galland that of all the allied planes he favoured the Mustang (I believe he got to fly one) .. why? Because it reminded him of the Bf109 but with longer range! I might have read it in his memoir's "The First and the Last" though I'm not 100% sure of that.
  5. Well actually it all depends on the quality of the joystick/HOTAS. If said pilots would only invest in a *good* joystick, they'd probably find airshows a doddle. I'm sure the planes can be retro-fitted so there's no excuse to be using the original 1940's era gear ... honestly! :P
  6. I'm with the FFB guys .. without FFB it's not worth a 2nd look IMO.
  7. JST, thanks so much for your creative work. I'm in awe at the quality and the diversity of your skins ... it's an amazing body of work. I just wanted to convey my thanks and appreciation. You rock! Cheers.
  8. Hey DrewPee, uninstall with JSGME. Then unzip \Bf-109K4 HD English Cockpit\Mods\aircraft\Bf-109K-4\Cockpit\Resources\Model\Textures\Cockpit_Bf-109K-4_Textures.zip ... replace those 2 textures as you mentioned ... zip it back up ... and re-install using JSGME ... that worked for me :).
  9. From memory, there's a texture file that you can copy over the one that has Sgt. Schultz's mug on it. You'll need to look in the folders of the supplied files. FWIW, I find the cockpit mod that's part of the package to be too dark and I prefer the rendering of the original cockpit so I don't use it anymore. I find myself to be quite comfortable in the original cockpit ... god I love this plane!
  10. I think I've found my favorite 109 skins. Thank you sir!
  11. +1 ... Was my favourite flying machine for years ... from back in the Air Warrior days, except it was a F4U-1D! My bible to fly it was Fletchmann's howto fly the Corsair. Aye, those were the days!
  12. Considering that it's a relationship between RW physical input and how that's implemented by the game as a certain amount of stick pressure I find the plane very enjoyable to fly. I know that while I only need to fly fingertip pressure, that approaching higher speeds (650 - 700) my pilot avatar must be exerting a fair amount of effort to move that stick ... flying the 109 and translating stick forces into the virtual stick force has helped my flying immeasurably all round for all the prop fighters. I love it.
  13. Good Lord! He uttered *that* word! :D
  14. Can anyone tell me where I can find the skin that's featured on the promo cover for the Bf109 ... and where the blue 24 skin also can be found (as per original product screenshots). I can't seem to be able to find them anywhere!
  15. Aww gee thanks mate! :P
  16. She's a beauty she is. Can I touch?
  17. Your video is *Private*?
  18. This is likely what most of us WWII prop sim enthusiasts dream about. :D To date DCS covers the "super realistic virtual reality high fidelity true simulation" aspect of it ... and I'm putting a LOT of effort into sending out clandestine positive vibes to ED for the rest of the dream. I find I spend most of my time flying DCS .. dreaming of a bright future .. play some more of DCS ... rinse .. repeat. I occasionally fly IL2CoD patched to latest FT .. but DCS really has the beef when it comes to the pilot experience with the airplane. There're a few online server's for WWII .. DoW and JG27 Fighting Legends are the 2 I know (both groups are a bunch of REALLY decent people) .. unfortunately my ping to both servers is pretty crappy ... so back to CoD for that occasional fix. Good luck on the search .. but make sure you stay with DCS so that they'll eventually respond dramatically to the market forces of critical mass! Cheers!
  19. Are you sure the P51 is that slow? The 109 doing 400 Kph is equivalent to the Pony's 250 (ish) Mph ... it feels slower but it's a kinda placebo effect maybe? But I tend to agree that the 109 seems to accelerate faster ... I can see the experten in the forums having a bit of a smirk here ... as these are facts I probably should know as a wannabe *virtual* WWII combat pilot!
  20. Your first dogfight WAY outshines my first efforts . (And that's not sayin' I'm the bee's knees now .. I'm just a bit less suckier) ... actually came back to edit this ... I've been flying a bit this morning and I still suck. I'd better watch some more video to get some much needed mojo.
  21. You might even say .. he OBLITERATES! I really do enjoy watching the maestro at work.
  22. Found this .. http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=513 They mention cruise speed for the P51-D is 275mph ... but a bit scant on other detail like @ what altitude whether it's IAS .. TAS .. etc. Maybe there's an assumption I'm missing as I'm no aeronautical expert either. At what altitude are you referring? When I fly the P51-D to experience it's speed (just tootlin' around the map), I generally get to about 10K ' and can get to a tad under 400Mph no problems. But I do some slight dives to get the speed up :D .. but then it seems to settle in quite nicely.
  23. No .. that's not what I said and not what I meant. *This* in the context I was talking about is the use of *manual open* for the two radiator switches. To elaborate, I haven't wrecked an engine using this method ... but as I pointed out I don't generally let it stay in the *cool* region for too long before I switch it back to auto. It makes for a busy cockpit management experience ... but it seems to work for me. Maybe I'm just fantastically gifted at managing engine/oil/coolant temps? :pilotfly:
  24. I think the manual states that if you hold the switches open for a count of 20 seconds it will be fully opened/closed.
