There'd be no point in 'separating' the periods in DCS World as it is a sandbox sim that happens also to have aircraft of extreme 'study' realism. This underlying focus that DCS has is what makes it a winner, as eventually more and more real world features make it into the sim and it'll be up to the campaign/mission designer to adopt a period ... or no period at all or even have no 'war' as such but depict simmering hostilities much like in real life. If DCS keep with the sandbox philosophy, eventually they'll cover all possibilities, including my PC-6 Pilatus Porter and up-to-date AIRAC navigation integration! Cheers

They played a small part this is true, but they played an important part. Also it would make sense as a springboard in to the Pacific theater in which I'm more invested. In addition .. since when did you care what my reasons are? Sheesh!

F4U-1D Vought Corsair .. but I voted the P47-D in your poll because you left the Corsair out ...

Soviet tech ALWAYS has a very good reason .. it's always practical and always effective. Can't always say the same about western gear ...

I bought it to support DCS .. but haven't ever played it. Having said that I see a lot of potential for multiplayer dynamic battles sometime in the future .. even if it's to control the flow of air assets in battle. I'll try it one day!

LOLS Leafer old mate! We should get back together an do some online flying now that DCS:WWII is starting to get populated. Last time we flew together was with Jekyll on Aces High .. I wonder where he is now ... talented flyer and a good teacher too he was.

Nah .. won't ever catch on ... a dead duck, won't ever fly. But then ... I also predicted that colour TV would never catch on in the day. I mean colour? Really? You get greater insight, depth and clarity in grainy black and white. Cheers, Teapot

I think this should be in the Wishlist area ... :)

Actually ... that's two words and a plus symbol.

The original post wasn't concerned about auto targeting; the discussion is drifting. I believe it was only asking about the viability of using a green box device to help with understanding elevation/azimuth of the radar. This visual device (green box) is far more effective as a teaching device than providing a link to a wall of text, particularly as many people here aren't English speakers (though it may be that equivalent walls of text exist in various other languages). While language can be very descriptive, it loses out in comparison to a visual aid because language tends to be more abstract. Understanding the mechanics via green box might very well take .1 of a second. Trying for the same quality of understanding via your solution (the link you gave that took you .1 of a second to find) takes a considerably longer time to digest and requires a fair degree of literary and technical prowess. If this green box were to be implemented as a teaching aid in some alternative DCS universe that you happen to be part of, I'm sure the option to turn it off via mission design or via user menu will be there ... just as are all the other training aids already in the sim.

DCS P-51D Landing Physics and Ground Handling
Teapot replied to midnabreu's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Thanks midnabreu for the rational and measure tone you've used throughout this discussion to bring up your concerns. As a simmer who wants the absolute best numbers I can get for the simulation of these aircraft I'm very happy that people will question if they feel something is missing. FWIW, I have no clue if this CG issue is an issue or if it isn't, however I hope your well reasoned argument will get a review ... just in case. And the review shouldn't just entail "we have a bunch of Mustang pilots who said it's good" .. because a good real life pilot may not have the muscle memory for a joystick on a PC .. despite being an ace in the real thing. :) In retrospect I recall that IL2 had a bunch of endorsements from pilots who'd flown the real deal as well. Hitting the right number and getting the feel right are both important ... therein lies the ART of simulation! That's my take on this. -
I hope there isn't a sub text in that comment ... DCS DOES have an arcade mode and even the non gaming mode allows the inclusion of training wheels e.g. take off assistance for the P-51D.

FWIW when I first jumped into the DCS P51-D from IL2 and Aces High I thought back then that it'd be a piece of cake. I've been wanting complex engine management in a prop sim for years and when I finally got it it took me ages to adjust. Now, I couldn't imagine anything worse than a dumbed down prop simulator experience! There's a valid reason that the RPM and Manifold chart is pasted on the right sill of the Mustang, and it's a good idea (rule of thumb) to stay in the green for the temp dials. Follow these two simple rules and you'll mostly be ok .. well, until the shooting starts! :D Other than that it's OK to push the engine for short bursts .. but never for too long.

Amazing aircraft! Thank you .. and what a way to ensure you have a legion of fans speculating on what the next module will be.

Really? That's terrific news for me, thanks! :D

Commenting is fine .. saying one should have or shouldn't have transcends commentary. The issue I have is when someone says that some other person should not have provided something to someone else based on the viewers perception of decency. Haven't seen the vid yet and I was 'commenting' on the original commentary of the commentary .. and wasn't commenting on your actions or perception as this is the first post I've seen of "your's" on this thread. Wasn't having a go at you old chap. Of course you have the right to think anyone's a clown, and I'd probably think the same way. No dispute about that from me.

What is this? Morality police on a flight sim forum? In most of my professional life .. swearing was part and parcel of the environment, it doesn't mean the people are any less professional. And I really balk when people tell other people how they should be. Now I'll just have to watch the video dang-nabbit ;).

Yep .. happens to me too when one on one ... in group fights it's a different story though.

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
Teapot replied to diecastbg's topic in DCS Core Wish List
What should be the next DCS module .. is in my sig. All you young whipper snappers pay respects to her now ye'hear? -
Allow me to enlighten you amigo! From memory, it's already been stated previously by Jim Mack and others that DCS is a Sandbox Sim. That means that eventually it'll have enough elements to make it fit any period you'd like ... or even no period at all. It will be entirely up to the mission/campaign designer. What this means is that DCS can be a WWII period sim, a Vietnam sim, Korea sim, Cold War sim .. it's all up to us really. I'm really happy about this vision, aren't you? Every module that gets published is a step in the right direction, and guess what; sometimes we gets what we wants and sometimes we don't .. but it's ALL headed in the right direction my friend .

Mustang First Take-Off and Landing: Post your Tracks/Vids
Teapot replied to 159th_Viper's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Pulling all the way back is not wrong ... what you may be doing incorrectly is not letting the stick go back to neutral as you track down the runway. FWIW, I pull the stick all the way back, leave it there for a few seconds and then allow the stick to go back to it's neutral position, because once it's locked it won't unlock until you shove the stick forward again. As the ship picks up speed, I smoothly apply throttle and apply tiny corrections with rudder. Then the tail lifts, tracking straight and true, and shortly after that I'm airborne. I don't do the 5 degree thingy .. and also read somewhere that they didn't do that in RL either (source eludes me .. sorry). From that same source I recall them saying something along the lines that the 5 degree trim was applied for cruise (?). If your ship is trimmed correctly, it will probably lift off prematurely if you exert back pressure on the stick before it's really ready to become unstuck ... if anything, I sometimes give it a bit of a forward nudge as I'm tracking down the runway to help raise the tail .. but be careful doing this because you can overdo it and end up bending the props or worse. -
109 pilots won't be the only ones ... judging from the video it's a European winter .. that's brass monkey weather that is, and I suspect everyone's recticles will be clanking around in the cockpit like nobody's business (fixed or otherwise). Historically a similar thing happened to the German Panzer crews on the Eastern Front .. I suspect not being used to the weather, their recticles were just frozen solid and as already stated .. that's a serious impediment to effective deflection shooting. The Russians on the other hand, being used to the winter (and due to copious amounts of Vodka no doubt) were able to keep their recticles warm ... and usable. The moral of this story is of course; you need to keep your recticles warm if you want to win the war!

Shiver me timbers man! Why isn't the A-6E Intruder in the poll!!?:D
-
The EDIT - OK. my revised pick is the Intruder ... and that tallies well with the MiG21. **Original post ~ changed as it was answered earlier in the thread ... :)** Why isn't the Lancaster represented in the poll? I didn't vote in this poll ... but would've picked the Avro Lancaster had it been. Considering the massive contribution the Lancaster made in terms of aircrew sacrifice and tonnage dropped, it deserves a spot in the poll .. alongside with the B-17 which was also a stellar performer.
