SSD noticeably smmoths flight experience
MackTheKnight replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Raid 1 - is a mirrored drive set - what's the issue with backing up to that? A drive fails you hot swap the failed unit and you're good to go. That's what it was made for.... Raid 0 is a striped set when you have the goal of performance/speed in mind. Hence I use that for my OS and flight sims -
Inside view of TM HOTAS Warthog
MackTheKnight replied to Frazer's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There's alot of bad press in this thread regarding the Warthog which almost descouraged me from picking one up until I saw it for the lowest price I've seen in Canada yet, and snapped it up for $409.00. (http://www.greytech.com) I had low expectations when it arrived yesterday and was very impressed with the both the throttle and stick when I took them out of the box. I knew they'd be big but this exceeded my expecations. Hard to tell from the pics but this HOTAS is huge! (my poor plastic keyboard tray could barely hold it up) First thing I checked for was "Stiction" as you guys seemed to view it as a big concern. My copy is smooth as silk through the entire range of motion, so far. I don't know if the folks that had problems with this saw it right away or it developed over time. I shall certainly keep an eye on it. It will definately take some getting used to as the deflection on the stick is about half of what my CH Fighter Stick is, and of course the springs are much stiffer. But, I like it. I've only flown for about 2 hours with it and I've really noticed increased accuracy when maneauvering and firing the GAU-8. The buttons all feel very solid and like I'd imagine the ones in the real A10 being. A few folks have commented on the slew stick being hard to get used to but I found it quite nice to work with and I could control the TGP easier with it then the one on the CH Pro Throttle. One little gripe I do have is that I pulled the base off the stick to turn it around as that fit better with my setup and I noticed that the screws and mounting points look rusty. Or maybe it's some kind of lock-tite, but it looks like rust to me.... Anybody else notice this? Anyways, that's all I have for now as I haven't used it much but my initial impressions are very good and I'm kinda surprised at all the bad press on the ED forum. Maybe I just lucked out with my serial. Happy Holidays everyone, Mack -
SSD noticeably smmoths flight experience
MackTheKnight replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I started using SSD's a little over a year ago. (Around the same time as Win 7 released.) I have 2 OCZ Agility 120 GB drives running in RAID 0. Read speed is around 475 with Writes around 390. I have my OS and all my resource intensive simulators on these drives and they run beautifully. It's amazing how much of a bottle-neck the old spinning drives are. I still use a 1 tb spindle drive for my data and my other steam games, etc. Eventually I'll update my data drive to SSD's, as well. I backup my RAID0 array to an external RAID 1 NAS just in case I run into problems. This is done on a weekly basis. I do the same with all of my critical data files on the 1 tb spindle drive. :) -Mack -
It'd be nice if they'd give us an official release date... I have a G27 waiting for this...
-
Wow, just Wow... ED - you never cease to surprise. :) D'loading via torrent now... Slow but worth the wait! -Mack

Try running a disk defrag... that should stress the drive a fair bit. If it's ticking then I'd consider RMA'ing the drive if it's still covered. A ticking drive is not something to ignore... unless of course you don't care about what's on it. :music_whistling:

Project 10 - DCS: A-10C Warthog Promo!

True, I wouldn't have "Had" to... but I really would have wanted to! ;) -

re DX11 - I'm kinda breathing a sigh of relief that you guys made the decision to drop it for A10C. I really wondered how you'd make a 2010 release and still make such a large change to the graphics engine. As others have said - great decision on your part, ED. :) And as a plus side I don't have to spend $200-$400 bucks on a DX 11 card this year.... -Mack -
Project 10 - DCS: A-10C Warthog Promo!

I think I read GA saying he wanted this to be his best video/movie ever... Mission Accomplished, man... -Mack -
If any of you are in the EST time zone or +/- an hour or two, PM me and maybe we can do some co-op sometime. Scabbers and I have been flying online a couple times a week and it's a blast to fly with some buddies provided you're in ventrilo or teamspeak, as others have suggested. (we use a ventrilo server some pals of mine have setup) -Mack

Wow guys, it looks better all the time. Keep up the great work! :)

New DCS:Ka-50 and FC2.0 sound engine
MackTheKnight replied to Distiler's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
as posted in another thread recently here you go: This worked for me, from this forum post: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?...2&postcount=22 ****Copy from that post**** "sound.cockpit_world_volume = 2.6 sound.cockpit_world_lowpass = 5000 to the top of my 'autoexec.cfg' in the Config folder, and have (for me at least) a good mix - maybe not realistic, but if it saves me forgetting to stop auto-dispensing flares, I can live with it! " ***End copy*** I hear bullet impacts, launches etc now without modifying anything else. (works for both BS & FC2) -Mack -
Vikhr - how to make launching sound louder

I vote gimmick for now. I've tried 3d in the past with those darn shutter glasses and all they successfully re-create for me is a headache. Until they can bring the same type of 3D home that we see in the theater (just have to wear a simple pair of polarized glasses), I don't think it'll ever be a big success at home. That's what I think, anyway...

wow, I must have been half asleep... Thanks for the correction...

You shouldn't have to shut-down the Helo, to re-arm. Just set her down on the pad, and change your radio mode to ground crew. Call for the re-arm and they'll do it while your engines are running. Should save you some time. :)

Can't answer your first question as IDK, but to this one, fly - yes, but put the throttle on the working engine to emergency power and RTB ASAP... hover - not a chance. :joystick: -Mack

Can we substitute our own voice for that of Sim ?
MackTheKnight replied to SnowTiger's topic in DCS Modding
Welcome back, SnowTiger. I can't answer your question though, so I'll leave that up to the experts... -
Just a hunch/suggestion to try re = not resetting your view. I have the same issue with track-ir in windows 7 if I don't run both the track-ir software and the sim in question, as administrator. Right click, run as admin. This is always the case for me unless I turn off UAC. I have the same problem with voice comm applications, such as ventrilo or teamspeak. I can't key-up my mic unless I run them as admin on windows 7/vista. -Mack
