Mapping key to my Hotas - some are not possible to map
CBStu replied to KonniRichter's topic in General Bugs
Yes, I learned that from a great helpful guy here 4-5 weeks ago. I have no idea why it quit working but it did and he helped me fix it. -
I have always run in windowed mode. I like it because I am sure still learning and having the task bar there allows me to pause DCS and bring up Chucks Guide, or a video tutorial, or some info I have saved such as range of different missiles. I haven't noticed any change since going to 2.7 stable.

I 'think' that depends on how the author created the campaign or individual mission. I have had that problem in a couple of missions and landed at another airbase. I had checked the F10 map that it was listed as neutral but I had no luck getting refueled. It's been a while so I don't remember which one.

Dang do they try to make things as unintuitive as they possibly can or do it accidentally? And BTW is that the way it works in DCS or in the actual jet or in both?
-
Look at 'Oil in the Water' campaign also. Be warned, there will be times that you will be frustrated. Some of the weapons are NOT real intuitive to learn. I have been stuck on missions in all the campaigns mentioned above, flying some missions as many as 15 times before succeeding. But, both of these 'authors' have been very, very responsive to my questions. And wow, when I finally get it, I know I have accomplished something worthwhile. When I get frustrated, I just go back to the included missions that I have already flown may times and take a day, or two, or three, of less frustration and more fun. But you know what? In the back of my mind there is always the thought that dang, I have GOT to get through that mission in that campaign so.... I hit it again.

DCS: F/A-18C THE SERPENT'S HEAD 2 CAMPAIGN
CBStu replied to Badger633's topic in F/A-18C The Serpent's Head 2 Campaign
YEEEHAAAW! I got it. Sure is fun using F6 to watch those buildings being blown up. Thanks Badger and everyone else for your help. Then it took 4 tries to get back on the boat but I made it and can now move to the next mission. -

It can be frustrating as heck but these campaigns sure do force me to learn things. I am finding that I use auto pilot more and more. BALT is great and I recently discovered that BALT, bank the plane, and hit ATHLD (?) for attitude hold makes it easy to set up an orbit, like when I need time to enter new waypoints. -

Thank you very much. If you just click precise, you enter the data in a 4 digit, enter, 4 digit format. I didn't catch that you need to enter it in a 6 digit, enter, 2 digit format after changing A/C and LATLN. Learning more and more of these weapons techniques is a lot of fun, but I can sure see how having 2 people in the plane could be a benefit. -
DCS: F/A-18C THE SERPENT'S HEAD 2 CAMPAIGN
CBStu replied to Badger633's topic in F/A-18C The Serpent's Head 2 Campaign
3 more tries today. I got through the migs on 2 of them. Hit the first 3 targets and was given coords for the 4th. Apparently I am entering them wrong. When I click the 'precise' button lower left the format on the screen changes from 6 digits to 8 digits so that is good but I notice that there is no decimal point between the 2nd and 3rd digit of the second group of 4. The entry works fine but the missile hits short. Not a lot short, maybe 3-400yards. So next time I try something I saw in a tutorial. I hit the 'precise' button and get 8 digits but then hit AC (aircraft) in the left top and then hit the lowest right side button which switches format again and now I have 8 digits and a decimal point between the 2nd and 3rd digit of the second group of 4. So I figure I have it now and go back to the waypoint page to enter the #s. But when I go to enter the second set of 4 digits, it only let's me enter 2. I change the 'aircraft' back, enter the #s and of course the missile hits short again. Obviously I am missing something but I don't know what it is. -
I don't understand. I have a twist grip and my rudders work fine.
-
I have noticed this too. And I don't have pedals, just a twist grip.

Yes he is a real pain in the a$$ and it has been happening for a long time- 1 year +. When he spots a flight of 4 he thinks he needs a separate call for each of the 4. And he is calling out sam sights also even though we are way out of their range. Yesterday I just shut that radio down but then I have no idea what other info I may miss. Depending what you are doing shooting him down can get you a fratricide call and you lose all your progress so that's a funny ( and I have definitely thought of it ) but not real useful idea. Can someone elaborate on how to do the 'silence' command please?

DCS: F/A-18C THE SERPENT'S HEAD 2 CAMPAIGN
CBStu replied to Badger633's topic in F/A-18C The Serpent's Head 2 Campaign
Thanks Badger. I will fly some more and keep that 32 mile limit in mind. -
I don't remember the mission name but we are to hit four target buildings in line at LAR airbase w/ 84 dumb bombs. We are given waypoints for each building. I think I am correct saying that there is no way to hit all 4 buildings in one pass w/ the 84s. Secondary question- after dropping the 1st bomb I continue on for about 7 miles beyond the target while I set up the next waypoint designate and then do a 180 turn to line up for the next target. Do I have to un-designate the first target before I can designate the next target? Thank you for your help.

DCS: F/A-18C THE SERPENT'S HEAD 2 CAMPAIGN
CBStu replied to Badger633's topic in F/A-18C The Serpent's Head 2 Campaign
I am on the 'At Arms Length' in SH2 easy refueling/super carrier version on the most recent stable DCS. Flown it 12 times. In around my 6th flight I finally get through the Migs (BTW does the wingman hit any of them?) and hit the first three targets and then I apparently didn't understand how to enter info for the 4th target because my missile missed by quite a bit. So I studied several videos and Chucks Guide and tried some more. My last three tries, the grumbles shot down all 4 of my JSOWs so I don't know if I got my data entry fixed for sure. I launched them from 32,000 as soon as I got the 'in range'. I have the first target set up on the flight in, so my 'as soon as' is maybe 5 seconds and then the next two as fast as possible while continuing to fly toward the target. As soon as the 3rd JSOW leaves the plane I do a 180 turn and get out of there. I have been safe doing an orbit of about 10 mile diameter centered on the route in and ranging from about 40 miles to target to about 50 miles. So 2 questions; 1- has the update screwed up JSOWs too, or 2- do any of you have any tips to keep the JSOWS flying? -
"Slow down by throttle, when I get under 250 knots, Gear out (for the E bracket) and flaps on full." Double, the 'flaps on full' is a problem at 250. The plane will head for the sky at that speed. I wait til the gear down has dropped the speed to 175 and then drop flaps. You can help it some by pushing the stick forward but why bother, just wait til 175.

My recommendation is forget doing pattern landings either on land or boat - for now. Do straight-in landings instead - for now. Pick any of the missions where you start 10-15 miles behind the boat/airstrip at maybe 3000ft and at 300. Probably best to start at an air strip. In fact it may be best to forget landing, just hold the plane at 3000ft. Pull the throttle back to idle, stay at 3000ft and watch the speed drop to 250 and drop the gear. You now have the E bracket on the hud and speed keeps dropping so you can ad a little bit of up trim if you want. Once speed hits 170-180 drop the flaps. Now start adding more up trim to keep the marker in the E bracket. You will end up at about 135kn once everything has settled out so, as speed drops to about 145, start adding throttle. Remember more or less up trim centers the flight path marker in the E bracket and that is all it does. Throttle determines how fast you will drop toward the boat/airstrip. Your stick keeps you centered left to right and that is all it does. At first you will drop too much speed or have trouble getting trim/E bracket right. Don't worry, just keep at it w/ your adjustments. Eventually you will be flying along at 3000ft, E bracket centered, flight path marker on the horizon, at 135-140. Once you are stable do some slight turns, straighten out, hit the throttle, retract flaps, retract gear, and get back to your start point of 3000ft, 300 and try it again.

Ah, thanks for straightening me out.

If info bar is the one across the bottom I keep it there by adjusting the screen resolution. Windows has it at 1920x1080 and I have it set to 1920x1020 in DCS and the 'play in a window' or similar checked.

I have one stick w/ one grip that I am very happy with. I mainly fly the Hornet but it's not a Hornet replica grip so I map it somewhat realistically but don't care to be perfect. What would happen in another aircraft? It's not a replica of any specific plane so it will never be a perfect match for anything. I do map a hat switch to match a Hornet hat switch but it is not necessarily the same hat switch located at the same place on the grip.

Cruizzzzer thank you. This is one of those things I am going to have to dedicate a lot of time to. Your diagrams will be a big help.

I have had a similar problem on the end of some of the supplied Caucuses missions. I haven't gotten to where I understand the marshall stack etc so I just do a straight-in approach. Adjusting trim and throttle to get to proper aol and suddenly trim moves up and down the E bracket. Sometimes it is pretty stable but maybe at the bottom of the E. I quick hit and release the trim button expecting a slight upward movement of the indicator and bam, it goes way to the top of the E. Since I have no idea how DCS upgrades and FA-18 upgrades are applied to older missions I just figured it is the new 2.7 (I have only had for 2 weeks) working a mission that came w/ DCS when I first got it 3 yrs ago. Sorry I am no help other than to say that the OP isn't the only one noticing some strange ICLS and trim problems lately.

A while back I figured out how to set the second # in the DCS screen resolution slightly lower than the resolution in Windows. This let's me fly DCS while the band across the bottom of my screen is still there. So if I have a problem I pause DCS immediately. Go to the bottom and open my browser to find a youtube tutorial or open Chucks Guide. I find help on my problem, go back to the mission in DCS and un-pause it. Sometimes I will hit L-Shift + R to restart a mission so I can go back and forth between the mission on pause, find my next step or two in my tutorial or guide, back to DCS to do those steps. This is especially helpful when trying to set up a new type weapon. The other day I was trying to add a waypoint so I could use it to bomb a target.

Thank you, I learned something new here.

For maybe a year now I have had on the keyboard 'L Shift + Z' does fast forward and 'L Ctrl + Z' goes back to normal speed. 2.7 seems to have swapped these two so I went to reset them. Scrolled all the way through the settings list and couldn't find anything labelled 'fast forward' or similar. Scrolled again looking at the keyboard column and can't find anything using the 'Z' key. I will appreciate any ideas you may have.
