Ive taken out heli before using boresight mode but its not always easy. Ive been having problems with Apaches. Several times now I have locked up and launched vhiker at them and it misses but I dont make it passed that cause everytime they launch at me it has never missed no matter how I try evasion. Manpads and such are much easier to avoid.

How is your wingman supposed to know what your target is? Im assuming datalinking for this isnt necessary? Is this using the assumption you told your wingman which one it is?
-
Usually targets for target group. Generally I take out the anti-air and try to get ai to take out the tanks.
-
Ive played several missions in GOW campaign where after reaching my point of ingress Ill datalink a target to my wingman then send radio command to attack datalink target and he just says negative. A couple of times he will say attacking datalink target and then he goes does something else completely. Anyone else have problems with that? Just in case I double checked the manual twice that I was doing send the datalinked information correctly. Usually he obeys mission and rejoin but just gets shot down. Waste of perfectly good ammunition I say.

I had kind of an interesting situation happen the other day. I had just got shot up. My right engine was on fire and I was going down. I pushed the fire extinguisher and cutoff the fuel to both engines. I extended the gear and went in for an autorotation landing. I suck at this since I so rarely do it but I managed to land with damage to the nose gear and left main gear. After an external view, I could see the right engine destroyed but the main blades and left engine were intact. Im still in enemy territory but I thought what the heck. Lets see if I can start her back up and hobble to base on 1 engine. After going thru the startup sequence and opening the main fuel line, the engine started to spin up to around 6000RPM then shut down. I retried the startup 3 times with the same result. Ive never seen this before and not really sure what happened. It spun up well above electric rpms and the exhaust temp indicator showed it was burning fuel but it could not spin up to operating rpms. Needless to say I had to end the mission but this is a curious case for me unless someone can explain it.

Draft parts list for new PC - opinions welcome
sweinhart3 replied to Dave_s's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Do your research when it comes to raid. I used to be gun ho about 10,000-15,000RPM drives in a raid 0 setup. Excluding the overhead required to manage raid which varies between controllers, the theoretical I/O bandwidth is doubled in a 2 drive setup. Unfortunately, as it turns out it is simply theoretical. In a single user desktop setup according to multiple tests at TomsHardware and Anandtech, Raid 0 provides almost 0 increased performance except in situations like ripping dvds. This is because the extra bandwith is only reflected when reading or writing single continuous files. In a single user environment, the reality is that most of your software is broken up into many smaller files. The extra bandwith is lost because your drive spends much more time with the latency of seeking the next file then reading a continuous one. Unfortunately, unless you are using it in a server environment, Raid 0 is a complete waiste of money. My bubble on that subject was popped and I was very disapointed. So if you want a fast IO system, invest in a higher capacity SSD. They will easily outclass a Raid 0 Velociraptor setup in a heart beat. -
Im in the middle of the second chapter of GOW campaign and from time to time have experienced some weird things. 1. The campaign frequently doesnt update my kills. Ive shot down several aircraft and vehicles and most of the time when I back out to the main campaign selection screen, my stats dont update. This happens a lot. For instance the game says Ive only had 4 A2A kills when I have shot down several more than that. 2. Occasionally when the mission loads and Im ready for takeoff, the Ekran states low Hydro pressure. I verified on the side panel that it is indeed at the minimum level indicator. Changing from main to aux doesnt do anything. This all happens prior to takeoff in a new undamage aircraft, however despite the warning, the heli flies fine and everything works. 3. Also occasionaly the autopilot does some weird things. Most of the time I fly toward my ingress point using Enroute mode. By the time I reach my target area, I have my weapons systems all set up and ready to go. I disengage Enroute and use HMS to turn to target and lock. So far all goes well. WCS is reset and Enroute mode reengaged. My aircraft is still undamaged but my heli goes from a trimmed hover to bouncing all over the place and turning in an almost uncrontrollable matter. Ive canceled all trim numerous times but the bull keeps bucking. Ive checked all 3 stability channels and they r solid lit. Trying to fight the aircraft usually makes it worse. The only way I can get it in control is to switch to Flight Director. Once its trimmed again for stable flight I can switch FD off without further problems. This behaviour is very unusual and doesnt happen often but it has happened on several occasions. 4. After running a campaign mission without dying which is thank goodness more often than not now, Ive several times exhausted my load of weapons, rearmed and exhausted a second load which is usually when my laser burns out. Most of the time Ive killed every enemy within 10km of my attack point. I go home. The campaign advances. But when I go to the players.lua file it says Ive achieved 25% for the result and my stats (kills) are not recorded. This one I cant understand at all.

So is that the same as $2.50 USD? At that price we could easily afford the bloodiest movie ever. Hot shots part deux.

BTW incase you didnt know the TM cougar has a dual stage trigger. To use it you will simply have to take the handle apart and add a spring to the second trigger button. Didnt know that until I modded mine

Deep Ingress - Tactics & Strategy Help & Suggestions please
sweinhart3 replied to Kaptn's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Well if your looking for something like the "We Were Soldiers" scene where its all quiet, and as soon as you get over the mountain you have 2 helicopters completely annihlate 100s of soldiers without getting hit, probably not got happen. Looked cool tho didnt it. -
I have that problem during sp debriefing. I highly doubt it is a driver problem. DCS.exe and the menu run on different executables. I think the problem is simply that the OS tasking is not being properly switched so that the menu remains as a background application rather than a foreground app. When it happens to me, if I click elsewhere on the screen it becomes the foreground app and the taskbar goes away.

I think it is ICD3 but not 100% sure. Im using the PICkit2 debugger/programmer. Not sure what you consider expensive but the chips Im using are 28-40pin dips that run $5-$7. I guess its kinda expensive for 1 chip but considering the costs of everything else, thats one of the cheapest parts in the system. Servos and pcb costs more than that.

Glad you like it. Im not gonna knock it. Also check reviews about ram. As it turns out there are sweet spots on memory speed that give the best real life performance that arent the fastest Mhz rated. 1600Mhz might give you better theoretical memory bandwith, but testers have found lower speed lower latency sticks to perform better in real applications. Also realize that upgrading your memory will not give you any perceived or noticeable performance advantage. You will be lucky if you increase your fps by 1. Read up a bit before you change out your memory and dont get cheap stuff. Often times 1333 low latency will give you the best performance. Back in the pre Nehalem days, running memory and FSB in a linked and synced manner gave higher performance than running in higher memory speeds in unlinked manner. Not sure how it is with the Core i5/i7 line since I dont own one but I do know they dont use a FSB anymore. Core i7 has integrated memory controller on the cpu so memory latency becomes more important.

Yeah thats gonna be a wait and see thing for me too. The code Im basing my stuff on is running at 12K baud rate. Most of my devices will be one way comms. Im undecided about running inputs off of a seperate system or integrating everything into one.

Thrustmaster Cougar questions
sweinhart3 replied to ScEBlack1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I use cougar and wont go back to anything else. But me I just like the look and heavy feel of a realistic setup. The hog stick looks awesome but Im not holding my breath. Its been advertised for months now without even a paper launch to it. One of the many vaporware products companies like to advertise. At least for awhile it seems. -
Ive been building my own rigs for almost 15years. I stand by own quality lol. With the exception of 2 HD and a bad series of Crucial Ballistix memory that I had to rma 3 times, most of the pcs Ive built over the last 10 years are still running. I would never spend the money on an alienware for reasons already mentioned. Beating the dead horse some more. I have only ordered from dell twice in my life. First time was several years ago and I had a pretty good experience from it. Last time was just this last December for a family member since I get discounted pricing and I can say I will never buy from them again. The techs are non native english speaking folks that dont know their ass from a hole in the wall. It really sux when they prove they know less about pcs then you. The order was delayed 3 times and took over a month to fulfill and they actually sat there and blamed Microsoft for not getting enough copies of Windows 7 when you could walk down the street and buy it. Dell is not making a lot of happy customers. If you plan to use a water cooler do some research before the investment. I once implemented a high end water cooler system onto a dual cpu system and even without overclocking it frequently overheated. I had to use a 9" fan blowing directly in my case. Admitted this was in the days of Athlon XP and I lived in Phoenix, AZ with a non functioning Air Conditioner. That sucked ass. Water cooling used to be the shiznit tho. But read reviews on them cause nowadays a top quality air cooler can give the same and in some cases even better performance than many of the stock water cooling systems for half the cost and without the mess or fuss. TomsHardware and Anandtech have good reads on cpu cooling. Also dont underestimate the importance of a high quality PSU. Get one with a guarantee. CoolerMaster and OCZ have some good ones. Shy away from the cheaper off brands cause a bad power supply can kill your whole system.

I used the pic32 and its expansion board as a starting point for coding and hardware. However the code will eventually be put 8-bit PICs that can easily be programmed and solder in. I will be using a RS-485 bus for the system which will communicate with the Master board and then be translated to USB for PC comms.

Well I bought 1/4" paneling but Im thinking if 95% of it is cut out its not gonna be strong enough to hold instrumentation. I may have no choice but to have someone cut out sheet metal for me. Im also at loss on some of the instrumentation. There is no way I will be able to simulate all of the instruments and trying to mix simulated instruments with monitors for glass instruments would present huge fit problems. I dunno a good solution to this yet. As long as there are instruments I cant simulate, I will have always have to have the instrument panel up in the main simulator. This means I would be looking at 2 instrument panels while playing and that would be at the least very distracting when Im trying to scope out enemies.

This is what I came up with based on StrandedDuckling's design and modified with my own interpretation of photographs. I make no claim to accuracy but I did the best I could without access to actual dimensions.

BS and Monitor Aspect Ratio question
sweinhart3 replied to hollywoody's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thats what I meant. My tv has a PC mode on it which is what I have selected. The windows desktop has to be resized in the video card control panel which reduces the effective resolution or at least what is being reported by windows. -
Would like to increase FPS by 10.
sweinhart3 replied to Unicorn0578's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Also remember when people say they r getting max 60fps that it is exactly that. The maximum fps reported under the most ideal case. That is no city scenery, water, vehicles etc. My computer will show 60fps too when Im flying around in the middle of nowhere. However when I load an Oil War mission and there are 40-50 units out there, it drops to a very sluggish 15fps. Of course I run with all my quality/visual/water settings maxed but thats beside the point. -
Well Ive had the issue since Ive had DCS, the last year and a half, but currently im running on a clean install of Win 7 x64 on a pc not currently connected to the internet, with DCS as the sole application installed. But Ive had the same problem with various video card updates and Vista as well. Ive tried default bios settings as well altho doesnt seem to make a difference. The other thing is Ive never had any problem with any other game. Only thing I can think of is maybe some kind of memory leak. I usually let my pc go to sleep rather than turning it off. I suppose thats a possibility. Problem is after it happens several times, it corrupts some file to the point DCS crashes everytime a mission is loaded and Im forced to reinstall.

A-A or A-G? The ED DCS dilemma
