BS and Monitor Aspect Ratio question
sweinhart3 replied to hollywoody's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I have an issue with the old overscan bug with the last several tvs ive used including one of Samsungs newest plasmas. Even tho the connection is 1080p, I have to resize the desktop to a slightly lesser resolution or else the windows desktop is larger than the screen size. -
DCS locks up on me over time more frequently. Eventually I have to reinstall and then its good for awhile before acting up again. Rather annoying.
-
ahh well that makes sense then.

I have a slightly off topic question reguarding the nose gear steering. It seems that both the cyclic and the rudder pedals can change the nose gear steer point. Is that normal? Sometimes at loadup the nose gear would be facing completely in a left/right steerpoint instead of forward. I used to have problems tipping over when I started to roll until I learned to push the cyclic forward. Rudder didnt always seem to change the direction until I had some forward momentum.

I love the shout they give if you forget to change the channel before takeoff. "Hey what are you doing?"

Quick edit: The smallest sizes home depot had were 1"x2" wood which in reality is 3/4"x1.5". Why they label these bogus dimensions is beyond me. 2"x4" isnt actually that size either. Anyway Ive since updated my cad drawings to accomodate those sizes. The up side is that the side panelling structure will be considerably stronger than I originally planned. The downside is that for a lot of the pannels I will probably have to do some extra routering to make them fit around the sides. I spent several hours today trying to get the angled cuts on the corner pieces right which was harder and took longer than I anticipated. I still didnt get it quite perfect but I think it will work ok. I will post a couple extra pictures on the previous mentioned site tommorrow. Also finally completed the first Oil War campaign chapter. Im a Captain now lol. Im sure most of yall are generals.

My girlfriend decided to put up a website with my project pics. Ill try to get some with the side panels this weekend. She posted a bit more than I would have cared for but here it is: http://picasaweb.google.com/sweinhart

Nvidia Vision 3D questions
sweinhart3 replied to Kankkis's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Track IR works fine with it. Yes you can use prescription glasses with them. You will get a FPS hit but depending on your system its still very playable. A good video card should help with that. I didnt have any problem with colors but the video will be darker. Your eyes receive only half the brightness as normal. Couldnt tell you about the monitor. I used a 61" DLP HDTV and worked very well with it. -
I expect this to be a year long project, mostly due to funding for the electronics portion. This website only lets you publish a finite amount of pics but when I get the framing done for the side panels, probably this weekend sometime Ill post one.
-
As I previously stated, the wheels are mounted on 2x4x4" hardwood. The same stuff i used for the framing which in turn is bolted to the particle board. As far as having wheels being pointless, I may not be able to move it out of the room without dismantle, but within the room it makes it much easier to move. I have so far installed the seat and sat in it, and started on the side panel framing. Ive played DCS on it for a month now and so far its been stable platform. I expect to have approximately 400-500 lbs on it but that weight is distributed across the entire thing. The heaviest parts are the chair and myself and it has no problem with me sitting on it. Ive painted the platform, completed the aces seat, and currently half way through the side panels. I also have something in the works to modify my Cougar and extend the stick as it is in the real thing. Next up I will be painting the rest of whats installed and begin on the main instrument panel. While Im not working on construction, Im using my time at work to develop the hardware/software for integrating simulated instruments. I have decided that the instruments will be mostly stepper based and run on an RS-485 bus which will communicate with the main controller and transmit to the pc via usb.

The mainpanelinit.lua has a nice list of exportable values and what they are linked to. Is there a file that spells this sorta thing out for input?

LOMAC and my Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas X
sweinhart3 replied to Wags94's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The straight line is the default linearity of a joystick for reference. The curve which in this example is pretty extreme is showing that there is very little joystick sensitivity for half of the joystick range and extreme sensitivity in outer half of your joystick range. -
Im sure everyone here is aware of the keyboard input pitfall when designing external switches which can cause the sim to be out of sync with switch position. Aside from setting up joystick/keyboard commands in DCS setup, what file and how would you directly write to the sim? Export.lua seems pretty easy to read. So how do you write?

Some questions about laser rangefinder
sweinhart3 replied to kidtx's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Im working on chapter 1 of oil war campaign and the last 2 missions I flew recently mine burned out after 1.5 loads of armament. I use rangefinder once per enemy unit followed by either a vihker attack or guns/rockets. In total Ive been getting roughly 30 cycles (excluding beam riding cycles) between burnouts. I simply cannot get target ranging afterward and weapons are useless outside of gun site mode. -
Ive seen this too. Im pretty sure the vertical ascent/descent is happening on the hillsides because the altitude hold is engaged and the aircraft is drifting along the hillside and radar altitude is therefore changing. This wouldnt be happening however if you werent drifting. If your trimmed for hover before engaging auto hover you shouldnt drift except to move back to where hover point was engaged. If you use rudder to change your direction and retrim to stay there, I find its often easy to introduce unwanted trim that results in slow horizontal movement as well. Occasionally I see some weird aircraft behaviour that I cant explain like drifting when its properly trimmed, auto turn to target not turning the aircraft when the shkval is slewed, or even the heli spinning in circles immediately after takeoff even after checking all the auto pilot stabs are engaged FD off and visually verifying that trims are reset and no rudder is being introduced. These things dont happen often enough to be able to duplicate on command but seems like weird bugs in the system.

I believe I launched 1 at the center and 3 more at one of the foundations on 1 side. I thought I saw it smoke a little but then it cleared up. So I went home rearmed and went back out and finished up the mission.
-
dont you just hate paper launches? It could be a very long time before it comes out. They didnt showcase it at CES so dont hold your breath.
-
Are bridges non destructible items? I flew a mission where I tried to blow up a bridge using several vhikers in an attempt to prevent enemy forces from crossing. Needless to say it didnt work. Wasnt even smoking.

just a little clarification. Im working on Georgion Oil War Chapter 1. Ive been struggling to pass I think its the 3rd or 4th mission, so at the end of the missions I end up bouncing back and forth between this mission and its previous mission. But logbook says that Im not only bouncing back and forth on missions but the stages as well.
-
In the players.lua file the missions in Georgian Oil War campaign are separated into 3 stages. Does anyone know what the different stages mean? The missions themselves seem to be identical reguardless of whether its stage 1, 2, or 3.

My system is still a Core2 Extreme and I get decent framerates. Ive messed with overclocking but had somewhat inconclusive results. Its default clocking was at 3.16Ghz but I ran it up to 3.5Ghz and had what I would consider a stable system. Windows would boot and I could play other modern 3D games for any extended time without a lockup. DCS however was giving me some different results. I could run the sim but it would crash at random points which is very frustrating during long trips. I lowered the frequency to 3.4Ghz and ran for quite some time. I could many times get through 2 or 3 missions without any problem and then I get the same Windows 7 popup "DCS has encountered an error" and stops running. Not long ago after this happened, DCS would always get this error when I tried to start a flight and I was forced to uninstall and reinstall. Ive since clocked it back down to 3.2Ghz and while this error still happens its less frequent. I cant explain this when none of my other games encounter this even when overclocked, but DCS on my system at least is sensitive to this. An article on Anandtech I read suggested that various CPU/MB/Memory combinations are very much a hit or miss when it comes to compatibility issues. Perhaps because DCS is cpu intensive, it might be a little more sensitive to memory or motherboard timings than other games. Ive thought about upgrading but Im not so sure I would get a great deal of performance enhancement. The Intel 975X was just a hair faster than the 965X. I read that the new Clarksdale 6core chip that isnt out yet is the same frequency as the 975X but with 2 more cores. This doesnt seem to give me much justification for upgrade. I would like to know how much fps difference in DCS btwn Core2X, i5 860, and 975X. If its like 5fps that isnt worth a $1500 upgrade.

Is Black shart able to do circle strafe?
sweinhart3 replied to jermin's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
When I strafe I usually have to input a small amount of opposite rudder to keep the nose straight especially as you pick up speed so you dont weather vane -
Im pretty sure you could do a decent airwolf in FSX. The real airwolf was a modified bell 222. I dont know if it is still on display or not but it used to be housed in California. Obviously it couldnt really do the stuff on the show but Im pretty sure there are bell 222 models in FSX that you could download from the community and simply modify its visual and flight parameters. Its probably already done by someone. Do some searching in the FSX community.

Ive been trying to run the first chapter and I cant tell if Im getting anywhere or not. I kill a bunch of stuff and eventully get shot down and then the next mission seems to be the previous one but when I fly that one eventually get shot down it advances to where I was before. Or so it seems. This last time it had me begin with a cold start which it hadnt done previously but the mission was the same. So I went thru my players log and it had all the missions I fly and noticed that Im flying the same missions except it says stage 1, 2 or 3. Whats the difference between the stages when the missions are the same? Its loading different mission files but I cant tell the difference when Im flying.

Is there any work being done on DCS BS?
sweinhart3 replied to H-street's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
my question is if BS and FC2 are compatible and FC2 has a much greater player base, whats to stop people from shooting every BS player down? that chopper doesnt stand a chance against any jet. Also I purchased LO when it came out but I never bought FC. Is it possible to buy just FC or do I have to buy both if I wanna play FC2 and does FC/FC2 update the Hog? A-10 and F-15 are the only jets in there Im interested in flying since DCS A-10 is gonna be a long while yet.
