  1. I've posted this elsewhere, so I'll do the abridged version: The logitech Extreme 3C Pro is a good stick, but I went through two of them and both developed the same problem of losing full left deflection on the X axis. It was never nailed down to a particular manufacturing lot code and was never really figured out as either hardware or firmware failure. Between the time I stopped using the 3D Pro and got an X-52, I used a Saitek Aviator. Using the Saitek profiling software, the 8 switches on the front, along with the 3 mode selector switch gives you 24 different functions. You can also program in the hat and stick buttons in each mode if I remember correctly too. Either joystick will work just fine to enjoy DCS. I will say that saving up for a HOTAS is well worth it though. The regular X-52 can still be purchased for around $100 and is a great setup. Mine lasted for years before I eventually retired it.

Yeah, three pages of people are :) http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=79467 Search is your friend
  3. http://www.piengineering.com/xkeys.php I know folks who have the X-Keys Professional units and love em for their durability and reliability.
  4. We also could not build another Iowa class battleship. Many of the pieces of those ships were forged on site and pretty much all of that tooling has long since disappeared. The ability to join and weld 16" thick steel plates is also a skill that has died off. When they brought them out of mothball the last time, they had to find people who were still alive who could teach others how to operate the main guns. If we don't use it - we lose it. As far as 12/21/12, if you are convinced the end of the world will occur, then please send me all of your worldly belongings and financial holdings on 12/20/12. If you perish in the end day and I somehow survive, then I will use the belongings to survive and to barter with. The financial holding will help fund the party I will throw on the last eve of civilization. In the event the end of the world does not occur, I will provide you with a cardboard sign that reads: "Homeless due to buying into internet sensationalism. Will trade rumors and speculation for food." :D
  5. LOL!
  6. @jp20300 Not everyone who buys DCS is a forum junkie. The newsletter gets the info out to them.
  7. That's not Bill Gates. It's the band letting a mentally disabled guy have some fun. Props to the band. They looked like they were really enjoying entertaining those folks and the patrons looked they were having a great time as well. Agree with BrumTx- poor taste.
  8. Another way:
  9. Too bad Kim Jong-nam defied his dad one too many times and was removed as the heir to rule. Now we'll have that maniac Kim Jong-un to deal with. Could be benign, could be bad. Just have to wait and see if the kid even gets the title to rule. With the old man gone, the seat is up for the political taking.
  10. @jrsteensen, I ship UPS everyday and you may want to try this if you can: Box up the seat back as one piece Box up the seat bottom as one piece Disassemble and box up the rest as a third box The larger and heavier a single box, the more it will cost to ship it because of how much room it takes on the trucks. You may also want to check FedEx Ground Freight. I twill take longer to ship, but they're used to dealing with larger, bulkier objects, You could then wrap it securely and secure it to a pallet that they can move with a forklift. I think your better option is making smaller boxes and shipping UPS Ground.
  11. he said he got it running & how he did it :) Read the 2nd post from Viper and then read con3para's last post
  12. ^^ Agreed. A single GTX460 will perform almost as well as two 5770's in crossfire mode.
  13. These people are going after the plasma's and higher end electronic deals to give as presents on Christmas. They're looking for deals since they live in a far more expensive house and drive more expensive cars. They're bills, proporionally, are the same percentage as mine and I make less than half of what they do. They're the types who also go to the designer stores on Black Friday to get all new high-priced curtains and such for great deals. I always say that if I ever get to that level of income, the house I live in and the cars I drive won't reflect it. I'd rather accumulate wealth than fancy material possessions, but that's just me. To each their own. My area comprises just around 200K people. The average mean salary is around $48000/yr as of 2009 data. Not uncommon to know folks who have a +$100K/yr household income. Also not uncommon to know those with less than half of that. My wife's best friend makes less than $20K/yr & pays child support. She wouldn't go near Wal Mart or any of the malls that day. She says she isn't desperate for a waffle maker or a 52" LCD TV. I will admit, I was almost tempted to try and snag a 42" 1080P LCD TV that was on sale for around $250. Thought DCS A-10C would look awesome on it. Had the cabbage too. The madness just isn't my cup of tea though. Besides, my 24" 1080P LCD is working just fine. That $250 can sit in the bank :D I'll say that most of the stampede is made up of lower than average incomes, especially at places like Wal Mart, but the crowd isn't ALL lower class.
  14. The reason I asked is because I know people whose incomes are greater than $100K/yr who go out shopping on Black Friday. They get there extremely early in the morning. They have a competative nature and enoying getting a good purchase at a ridiculous price as much as anyone else. I associate with people based upon their persona - not their income. None of the lower class people I am friends with participated in the Black Friday madness. Most of the folks I personally know who did were middle class Americans. The root of the spastic mentallity on that day is not class based. It's society-based.
  15. What defines the "lower classes" Mower?
  16. Yeah, but it takes a real finesse to fly the prop jobs in combat. :)
  17. They don't say what TYPE of sims they've worke don :D For ground combat and small arms ballistics sims available to the general public, ArmA and VBS are two of the best out there. Compared to the models and FM's most gamers have experience with, this is not entirely false at all. ToH is a Gateway Simulator. Remember, study simmers like those here are not the targeted audience. They're targeting a more casual audience, but that can benefit the more advanced sim community. Some of the folks who get ToH will probably hear about DCS and such and wind up buying it. If so, then ToH was the reason they got here. Don't bash Gateway Sims or Sim-Lite's as often referred to. They can do our small community in the gaming world some good ;)
  18. @Grimes I know a few people who ae also complaining that, while fun, that BF3 isn't living up to its predecessor in terms of battle intensity and overall gameplay. They say the sights and sounds are much better, but it feels as though something was compromised in lieu of the eye & ear candy. Of course, these same guys are older and feel thaat BF2 never lived up to BF42 in terms of epic battles and maps.
  19. Not working in IE7
  20. The way I figure it: I bought the game in 2008. I got my money's worth out of it. I flew the hell out of the Blackshark. Now, with the prospect of flying coop w/ the A-10C, I will be flying it some more. $20 for an upgrade isn't all that bad imho. The only thing I wished ED would have done is given some advanced notice on this. While $20 isn't hard to come by for me at this moment, others might not readily have it available and will miss out on some fly time with their friends who can afford it. Advance notice could have let them budget it in. There would have been the pre-emptive complaining (as always) but at least people would have known :) It also would have taken alleviated the "Here's the upgrade! But ya gotta pay for it" surprise everyone got hit with :)
  21. I knew 'em back when they were just struggling to get noticed in the US from seeing them a good many times in the circuit. I wasn't in a band at the time, but Savatage (even back then) had a thing about always being available to the fans. Even to this day, now that they've become the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, there's a meet n greet after every TSP show :) Anyway, it was just me hanging out with Criss at a bar before one of their shows. He was showing me how he pulled off those really painfully high pinch harmonics and how he got his tone. His tone was REALLY interesting on those Randalls :D
  22. Historically, my live sound was always via an Ampeg VH-140C head with a Rocktron ProQ and a Rocktron Intellifex in the effects loop running through a Genz Benz sealed 4X12. Recording-wise, I would record three signals and leave the channel EQ on the board turned off: 1) Raw, dry pre-amp feed from the Ampeg head 2) Shure SM-57 cone mic 3) AKG 414, or equivalent condensor type, ambient mic During mix-down, I would run the pre-amp feed through the ReValver plugin to model a really nice, solid replication of my tone and then blend in the mic feeds. Made for a really rich representation of my tone without going overboard on the bass or the mid's. My tone was initially inspired by the cutting edge fullness of Criss Oliva of Savatage on & Edge Of Thorns and the richness that Zakk Wyled had on the No Rest for The Wicked release. I was also inspired by Jeff Loomis of Nevermore and was blown away by his tone on . I couldn't help but fall in love with Nightwish's Emppu Vuorinen's tone, especially on the track Ghost Love Score from the album Once. His tone remains the same live or studio and that's danged hard to achieve. Of course, Brian May of Queen was the pinnacle of making a unique tone and identity and I think he hit the peak of tone with the song . It took a long time and going through ALOT of guitar and equipment configurations to finally dial it in. I also had to learn that much of a guitarist's tone comes from how they actually fret and strike each and every note and chord. The pressure on the strings, the firmness of the pick strike, etc I played through Criss Oliva's rig on one of his guitars and could not, for the life of me, get it to sound like he could. That was my first lesson in making the tone unique to the player. Nowadays, after some back injuries and just generally getting older, I no longer carry the half stack. I have modeled my tone using a Line 6 XT. I always run direct now. Monitors give me my stage reference. Not having a cabinet and cables everywhere also frees up alot of room. I also have a single 12" combo amp to use as a reference if needed. http://www.myspace.com/lychesis Play Break. I'm the right channel. The lead on this song was the other guitarist. He's a technical shred wizard. This was an early mix of the song. Not too thrilled about posting the horribly compressed and crappy bitrate sound of myspace, but it's all we have uploaded at the moment. The overall tone of the mix is a little too thick and muddy from what the final will sound like. We're still waiting on the final mastering of the songs. The mastering studio got hit by the ONLY bolt of lightinging from a small, independent cloud and the primary AND backup drives of the Work In Progress got obliterated. So, everything went back to square one on the mastering process. Ignore "The Call". Great song, horrible mix. This was a complete test mix and, in reality, should not even be on the internet cuz it's such a horrid representation in terms of balance and how it sounds lol! We haven't touched our myspace page in forever and don't plan on doing anything on the net until the masters are completed. Last time we did, lightning struck and all the hype we were generating was for nothing :D
  23. I went from 7 (including a couple of custom made guitars) to two electrics: The main one: Schecter Jeff Loomis Signature 7 String. Love this guitar, nothing but tone for days and great action to boot. The secondary: Jackson DK2M. Mine has the neck pup disabled and an EMG-81 at the bridge.
  24. Most keyboards made for POS (Point Of Sale) systems are fully programmable. There's a ton of those on the market. Try looking in that direction :) Also, you can look at X-Keys. I know some guys who have one to two of these and swear by them: http://www.piengineering.com/xkeys/xkpro.php When not flying, they simply unplug 'em and set them off to the side. Will not conflict with your current keyboard either :)
