Mission 2 - Tanker Callsign and TACAN
Lt_Jaeger replied to Lt_Jaeger's topic in DCS: F-14B Operation Sandworm Campaign
I was thinking more down the line that you put a whole area map in the kneeboard, mark a square on it which will represent the zoomed in one, which is already in the kneeboard and which is fine for the presented mission relevant Infos. -
I find it more impressive that ACLS flies you right into the stern of the boat (hope that is the correct term for the ass of that swimming thingy sLYFa, you know that I need all the help to get not lost
-
Yeah, the latter I did not figure out myself. You might join the discord, the developer is very active over there and sometimes even react on the spot with bug fixes. Edit: Discord Link : https://discord.gg/QQhzk782EV

Short hint for an improvement
Lt_Jaeger replied to Lt_Jaeger's topic in F-14A Fear the Bones Campaign
Yeah, that is what it does, but Jester keeps verifying the items and bitches if something missing. Quiet nice, I would say and the whole purpose of crew coordination. But hey, just a hint. -
If you got a table of content in a PDF or added a folder with a bunch of pics you get in the top left corner that button thingy. If these pre-requisites are not given, you can only navigate via buttons on the hotas or tablet.

I just did the Mission 2 and I must say I'm pleased. Lots of stuff going on, which I think makes sense. I like the length of the mission, I expect a somewhat lengthy like 1 h to 1:30 h Mission in a campaign. If I want to do shorter stuff, I jump into a quick mission. Might not be everybody's taste, but hey... Problems I found: Tanker is callsign Shell and TACAN 22X versus the Briefing Texaco and 22Y That's about it. We talked already about the immersion killing Computer voice, but I think the dialogs and stuff can bring someone into the mood. At the end there was a mess, airplanes falling out of the sky around the boat, by the dozens (I guess 3 including my wingmen) which I consider an ED AI thingy which can't be fixed by you. Turned off wake turbulence after this mission, since that messes with the Tomcat burble at the moment, hope the mission won't override it. Actually looking forward now to the next mission. Edit: Oh, maybe you could add another Map (bigger scale) into the kneeboard. The area map is fine for the mission but to figure out where all these planes are coming from, a bigger area would be better suited in my regards. I hate to look in F10 since that is, you guess right, another immersion killer. I use a VR Kneeboard and have only your briefing for reference, so it's hard to get SA about the whole region (might be a problem with OpenKneeboard not loading the Theater Map - which would only make it my problem). I dont like the build in kneeboard, yeah you are right, that is again immersion killing for me
-
I'm so looking forward to it (your upload). Due to my mounting situation, I need to make some heavy editing but since these Panels ar pretty boxy, I hope it will be kinda doable to convert the files in something editable in Fusion360. The HSI I even most probably need to cut in halves This is the way I have to mount it, so it sits in the right place in VR. It's not even symmetrical, which I don't understand, but hey, it works Would love it if you could also provide the "VR - light blocks" You are really the men ... way to go.

Hi there maybe you would like to check out Sandmans - landing checklist test mission for further reference. I like the approach and would like to see something like that in the "next great thing"

Bugs & issues
Lt_Jaeger replied to Sandman Simulations's topic in DCS: F-14B Operation Sandworm Campaign
I briefly checked that template and must say I like it very much. Might be even a little faster with Pilot calling the items and a fast reply from Jester (check). I really like the bitching Jester does if you forget something (deliberately tested some items). For me, this would be the way to go. After trap, if you move the wings back and raise the hook, jester bitches too, This might to be looked at. Other items are not called out (did e.g. check SAS) On another note..... I must admit that I am a little reluctant to play the next mission. This computer generated voice is an absolute immersion killer for me. Immersion is everything in a (paid) campaign, and you most probably know the good examples out there. I was instantly turned off, like literally 1 second after mission start, as soon as I heard that voice. I do work with some guys who do (online) training programs, and they go through great length trying to make a computer voice (if there is really no way for a human speaker) sound as good as technically possible, but in this campaign the voice reminds me of the first efforts to make computers talk. Furthermore, I really really recommend to re-think this approach. I (roughly) understand the pain you have to go through if you need voice actors, but I believe there are enough guys out there, which will do some acting just for the fame in the credits. If this is not your way, there is software out there which is way better in reproducing human voice. I will continue with the campaign and hope for some nice missions, but I won't be as engaged as with other campaigns out there. This is no dissing, I hope you understand, but I'm a little disappointed. -
@LASooner Man, that is so great. Any chance you would share your plans / files for this? This is definitely a wet dream come true. For this I would immediately stop my work on the TEDAC.
-
@hannibal Im working currently on your TEDAC MFD frame. Got it printed, waiting for switches. Since I don't want to fit a screen (VR only) I thought I want to place a 4 - way (5 way) for Georg control. Then I need to see how to merge it all. Did some measurements for fitting it on my Monstertech. Will be a huge box like 15x15x20cm plus the mounting. Currently I try to design a spring loaded lock system so I could adjust the grips. Will see how far I get with this. Actually I know that I won't fly the Apache much, but the setup is a challenge and for a 50+ guy, who never had something to do with designing stuff, let alone 3d printing, it is quiet fun to try it anyway. Kinda hobby in a hobby

I will get the F-4 as soon as it hits the store. Meanwhile I wait which goodies for my Tomcat will come around. Yes, I miss a feature of two, but overall I still have a blast with that thing, which is my almost exclusive ride since I started with DCS.

Bugs & issues
Lt_Jaeger replied to Sandman Simulations's topic in DCS: F-14B Operation Sandworm Campaign
Hey, thanks for the answer. I did this mission 1 again, and yes, there are AWACS calls on departure and arrival. I made sure this time to switch both radios between Ch 2 and Ch5 so there would be only one freq. Too bad the radios are not to be seen, but both are set to departure. Like I said, same thing on arrival. -

Barely started, but it is pretty annoying to have awacs calls on the approach and depature channel during carrier qual. I think they should be on a different frequency. I think the landing check list is to long. As I understand it the pilots quotes the items and the RIO just confirms them. Working the whole list takes way too long if you not doing a 2 mile downwind leg. -
Yeah, that is my personal arch enemy of the bugs.
-
No, no, for sure not. Actually, I did not bother to think about the wiring, since I want to do the "mechanical" part first. It will either be a Matrix or I might use some shift register, not sure yet.

Honey, I developed FFB joystick (DIY)
Lt_Jaeger replied to propeler's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This. Getting very interested too. -
Not sure if I gonna do a collective. I'm more of a jet guy. This project is more born out of the "hobby in the hobby" thing and due to the fact, that I did not found a good way to operate the CPG station in VR, while the pilot office is kinda easy to operate with my throttle and stick + PointCTRL.

Gees, that is hard to tell. Let's start with the fixed costs, the printer. I got the artillery Sidewinder 2, which is rather big for these kinds of work, but, as also a total 3d printing noob, YouTube brought me to the understanding that this thing is idiot-proof. It isn't, of course, but after some testing and stuff, I could get some decent results. Don't get the idea though that you will come up with commercial grade results, but since I fly in VR, I don't care much about appearance. I paid around 370€, but I believe there are cheaper ones around which produce the same results. Software: Free I use Fusion360 and Cura which are both free. For Fusion, I would wish for the professional features, but I won't pay a couple of hundred € per year, so I get along fine so far, especially since I got no idea of CAD constructing Filament. The most filament I waste on printing prototypes like caps and stuff. These don't need much material, so it's in the lower cent area. I believe the grips will do fine with one roll (20 - 30€)of black, and then I have the gray for the knobs and stuff. Let's say you need 2 rolls, make it 3 for the frame still to be constructed, with being able to print all the knobs as well if you don't care for appearance. Electronics. I will do a simple st32 board to emulate a joystick device, so no DCS BIOS and stuff. These things are cheap (~3€) + let's say 30€ for switches and stuff, I order all my stuff in China, which takes forever but get you better prices. Like, I did order a bag with 400 tactile pushbuttons, which hopefully last me forever. All this yields to something like that Not very professional, but it will do the Job, I hope. AND you get a hobby in a hobby. Did so much stuff already around the house with that printer, I cannot imagine how it was without one.

[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Lt_Jaeger replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok, it's a bug in.net/windows, I try to add some more code to prevent / workaround this issue... Usually deleting the user.config file should be enough... The file is nested somewhere inside the AppData\Local directory Even if I delete the file, SSA does not start to work again. I have to downgrade several versions for getting the functionality back. Not at the computer at the moment, but I believe it's version x.x.7 or something like that. I can upgrade now and it keeps working, for a couple of days. -

Same here....config file is empty again, did work for a couple of days. -
One step closer, finished to integrate the PS4 ministick. Since the files for the grip are available on thingyverse, I thought it would be a quick one, man was I wrong. Trigger and that thing took a while, since I'm not very professional with Fusion360, or with CAD in general. Mostly trial and error, and that's how it will continue.
