DCS Super Hercules mod by Anubis
Doc3908 replied to Eight Ball's topic in Flyable/Drivable Mods for DCS World
Well, someone had to do it... LoL! Landing the Herc on an aircraft carrier. Managed it on the first try even though it's far from a good landing (I've only flown the Herc a couple of times so far). Lots of fun. Thanks, Anubis, for the wonderful mod!!! -
I am starting a series of videos flying different DCS airframes against the exact same aircraft type flown by the AI. These will be guns-only engagements. The AI will be set to "veteran" in all videos. Two rounds per video followed by a landing. The first video is a MiG-15bis vs. MiG-15bis engagement:
-
Just tried both Mig-19 vs Mig-15 and Mig-15 vs Mig-15. The AI is set to "veteran". I won 2 of the 3 Mig-15 vs Mig-15 engagements, but got my butt kicked all three times when I was flying the Mig-19. Argh!! Need more practice. :)
-
Here's a rather long video of multiple one-vs-one engagements I've been flying over the past two-three days in the Spit vs. the Japanese A6M2 Zero. The Zero mod is accessible from this thread: https://forums.eagle.ru/forum/englis...arrier-zuikaku (and the Zuikaku carrier is really nice too). Unfortunately, the Zero is only AI now, but it is super-maneuverable and makes for an interesting challenge. The AI is set to "veteran" in all engagements. Here's the video - hope you enjoy it! Doc

DCS Super Hercules mod by Anubis
Doc3908 replied to Eight Ball's topic in Flyable/Drivable Mods for DCS World
I can't believe this is a free mod. It really is outstanding. Thank you so much!!!!! -
Yup. More or less back to "normal". I'm happy! :)
-
Yes, the Zeros used to regularly encounter Chinese I-16s (and I-15s) during 1940. The results were quite one-sided (and not in favor of the I-16s). In DCS, however, we can write our own history... :)

Having some sneaking up on F-86 Sabres in my MiG-15... -
That's exactly it! The Sabre (at least the current DCS version) cannot match the Mig-15 in the vertical. Given its low roll rate, this makes the Mig somewhat of a one-trick-pony, but it sure works. If you have a Sabre on your six, start doing loops. Two or at most three circles later, you will have a guns solution on the Sabre (if he is foolish enough to follow you into the vertical - and the AI always does).

A couple of months ago I stumbled on a post in the Mods section about Zuikaku carrier (which in itself is quite nicely done): https://forums.eagle.ru/forum/english/dcs-world-topics/mods-and-apps/dcs-mods/287684-ww2-aircraft-carrier-zuikaku. But there was also a mention of an A6M that the guy had done. Here's the link to his site: http://virtualcockpits.web.fc2.com/mod/dcsw_reisen52/dcsw_reisen52.html. Unfortunately, the Zero is no longer flyable, but it makes a nice AI enemy to test your skills against. And, believe me, it will test your skill (though I'm not sure how realistic the flight model is...). Here's a video of me taking on an AI-controlled A6M in my I-16 (one of very few victories I managed against this A6M)...
-
OMG!!! Finally, a La-7 on the horizon. My second favorite WW2 aircraft (after the I-16).In some ways, the more maneuverable Yak-3 would have been better, but the La-7 is an outstanding choice too. So looking forward this!!!

How on earth do you do dogfights with this thing
Doc3908 replied to Ancalime's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
I've been reading this thread and all the good comments on it. I got the Bf-109 last winter but, after a few initial flights, pretty much haven't touched it since. You guys inspired me to give the Bf-109 another try. Here's a video of my engagements against AI-controlled ("veteran") P-47, P-51, Spitfire, and I-16. Mistakes notwithstanding, it's been a lot of fun. -
I've been playing with the F-5E and the Mig-19 over the last few days, and I have to admit that I have a much easier time in the F-5E - at least against AI (my AI is always set to "high", rarely to "excellent/ace"). In the last two days I flew about 15 one-vs-one engagements in each aircraft. With the F-5E, all but two resulted in the bandit being shot down (the other two he flew into the ground on his own). With the Mig-19, I struggled in EVERY engagement. I won about half of them, got shot down quite a few times, and a few times the F-5E flew itself into the ground. Rossmum mentioned earier than at 800km/h, the Mig-19 has an outstanding turn rate. That is true enough, and for what it's worth, the Mig can sustain that turn without afterburner almost indefinitely. The problem is that the AI-controlled F-5E can easily stay in the turn and, in fact, raise its nose to take shots (a few times he literally killed me with one shot through the cockpit). The AI can outturn me at any speed between 500km/h and 1000hm/h (I tried sustaining 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000km/h). And once he is on your tail, maneuvering doesn't help much since he's got a superior roll rate. I can't even outrun it: Hugging the waves, I managed to get to about 1300km/h or so, and the AI F-5 stayed right behind me, shooting merrily every time I straightened out for a second. So, the trick to winning in the Mig-19 seems to be not to let the F-5 out of your sight and stay behind it as best you can. Once the AI is behind you, the chances of a successful outcome are drastically diminished... I'd love to try flying the same one-on-one missions against real players - really curious how the Mig-19 (and the F-5) would stack up without the AI advantages (and its stupidity and predictability).

[Solved] Propeller animation stopped to work
Doc3908 replied to astazou's topic in Bugs and Problems
Outstanding!!! Fantastic news! This is my favorite DCS WWII bird and I really look forward to the updates! Really glad this project is still alive. -
You guys inspired me to take the old girl out for a spin. I haven't flown this thing probably since April, so I'm rusty as heck, but she does handle decently. Did four fights against an AI ("high") F-5E: Got my butt kicked the first time, but then, once I got back the feel for how the Mig-19 handles, I got the F-5E shot down three times. So, she's not horrible, just takes a little getting used to... Here's the video from the last engagement:
-
Don't know about the -30 vs. -30(early), but the I was flying the -40 last night and noticed that it's much more resistant to spinning than the -30 (and I like the ability to put the plane in a spin when I need to). Could be just my (erroneous??) perception... I'll do a more deliberate study today.

[Solved] Propeller animation stopped to work
Doc3908 replied to astazou's topic in Bugs and Problems
Just checked - prop animation is still broken in the latest stable release... -
Does anyone know when the new MiG-21 will be pushed to DCS stable? I can't wait to try out the new FM (but not willing to switch to OB...)
-
I made a compilation of my MiG-21 encounters (guns only) with various US airframes - F-5, F-15, F-16, F-18, all flown by AI set to "high" or "excellent". Rusty as I am, most of these encounters are fairly quick (I also can't aim to save my life). Again, the primary reason is how stupidly the AI flies. Watch how many times the AI makes moves that make you go "What the heck is this guy doing? Trying to get killed??". It'd take a very inexperienced DCS human player to make these kinds of mistakes and decisions. Anyway, hope you enjoy the video... :) Doc
-
Thanks, _Firefly. That was interesting. The "new" MiG certainly seems to keep up the F-5 (good job keeping AoA needle out the red). On occasion it looked like the F-5 was starting to out-rate the Mig, but you kept on right behind it. Of course, the F-5 is so tiny, hitting it is more a matter of chance than marksmanship - for me at least.
-
Looking forward to your online play video. I'm using DCS stable, so I haven't had a chance to try the new FM, but beating the AI is not hard even with the old model. I have several videos of quick MiG-21 victories against the F-15, F-16, and F-18 (all set of "excellent", of course). The only one that really gives me a run for my money is the Mirage. In general, the problem with fighting AI is its extreme predictability. Once you learn its tricks, you can anticipate exactly what they will do and plan accordingly. Not to mention they do moves that no sane human would do. The other problem with the AI is that they wait for the perfect shot. In many cases, they have their nose on me and I'm thinking "Perfect shot! Why doesn't he take me out?" (sometimes they do, of course). But overall, I feels the AI is programmed to shoot only when it's got a perfect solution, which rarely happens in a dogfight. Most of us take pot shots when the opportunity presents itself hoping it'll connect. I don't think the AI ever does that... At any rate, have fun tonight and do post a video please. Cheers! Doc

I guess I, too, am a part of a very small minority - those who do not own the A-10C (I have every module except A-10C and C101). The A-10 is simply not my cup of tea. I do almost exclusively A2A and hardly ever A2G. I tried the A-10C when they had the free trials and didn't care for it. Since then I have put in about 30min in the A-10A from FC3 and all of that playing with air-refueling. Once I learned how to refuel the A-10 consistently, it went back on the "virtual shelf". So, to all who appreciate the A-10C, I wish you many hours of enjoyment and satisfaction from the new A10Cv2 (and best of luck to ED with the sales, of course - I don't doubt it'll be a success). In the meantime, I'd like to find out the preorder/release date on the Mi-24 heli... :) Cheers! Doc

So quiet on a stable version ww2 servers.
Doc3908 replied to RC Maniak's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Thanks, man. I'll see if I can jump in on Sunday... Hopefully, there'll be company. -
Excellent footage! So, it's not just us virtual pilots who are struggling with this... Thanks for sharing the video!
-
It was tough in the beginning, but eventually I learned to refuel almost every "refuelable" airframe - A10A (I don't have the C), AV8B, F-14, F15, F16, F18, Su-33. The only one that I haven't refueled successfully yet is the Mirage: Tried one time, didn't work, never tried again. I should give it a try again at some point though I don't fly the Mirage much.
