+1 for 2d players. Head movement to control the radial much better in VR. I am getting used to just moving my head with TIR to select options, and am getting quicker the more I use it, but mouse control would be a nice option to have.

I'm on Heatblurs side here. The main reason for the backseat RIO when they designed the F14 was to take a load off the pilot's shoulder and allow him/her to focus on flying the plane. Allowing the pilot to have front seat control of backseat operations completely betrays that principle. To me, it feels like I'm not doing anything in the front seat, and always want to fiddle with buttons, but that's the tomcat. Pilot maneuvers and the RIO gets to play with all the toys. However, I would like to see the Iceman AI get better the ability to switch to the back seat on multiplayer; but, I'd rather see Heatblur continue refining the Jester and Iceman AI rather than implementing a front seat mod that allows RIO functionality from the front seat.

From what I've read, the big advancement as far as the Rift-S is concerned is not so much the Res increase, which is always a plus, but in the inside out tracking built into the headset, obviating the need for the outside sensors.
-
Tried different GBU's and they always fail to track; they all fall way too long. 1: Call up JTAC 2: Go through the 9 - line, making sure I give the "laser on" and "spot" call. 3: Call "in", get a "cleared hot" reply. 4: Set up my LGB laser codes and confirm that they are in and showing on the stores page 5: Mode to CCRP 6: Fly the Steering cue. 7: Hear bomb leave the rail as cue passes through velocity vector 8: Turn off target. 9: Bomb just doesn't track and falls way long. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here...

For some reason every time I want to "Apply Air" or "Connect Air Supply" it's not getting recognized, but instead registering as being "locked in preferences." Any ideas? Thanks.

Pretty much this. As someone said earlier, its a 60's - 70's cold war jet designed for interception and fleet protection. Strike and deep strike capabilities were all 90's era modifications they attached to the airframe.
-
From my experience, if you're too close to the target- just how quantitatively close is anybody's guess - when you give the "In" callback, you get the "abort, abort, abort" instead of the "cleared hot" response.

Additional stick to operate the lantirn stick functions?
DocSigma replied to DocSigma's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Hooked up the Cougar and it's working well. Had to make sure to clear all the automatic keybindings that are assigned to certain axes, such as pitch, roll, etc.. - my Cougar suffers from some severe pot spiking - at the time I modded the throttle will Hall sensors but not the stick - and couldn't have that interfering with my main Warthog. -

Modifiers completely slipped my mind. That's a good idea as well. Thanks. -
Additional stick to operate the lantirn stick functions?
DocSigma replied to DocSigma's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I know the stick isn't movable, and I wouldn't be buying a new hotas, but just using my old TM Cougar stick which is just collecting dust and not being used. I just can't, with my current pilot mappings, get the necessary mappings to my Warthog, so I thought this might be a solution. thanks for the feedback. -
Can someone explain how to operate auto pilot?
DocSigma replied to imacken's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
You have to manually set the aspect - alt hold, heading hold, etc.. - switch to on - flip the switch to the up position; engage the autopilot and the plane will fly accordingly. Once you disengage autopilot, the alt hold, heading hold, or alt/heading switches revert automatically to the off position. The next time you want to engage the autopilot, you have to make sure you re-engage the topmost switches again before turning the autopilot back on. -
I know the LANTIRN stick when equipped isn't movable in the pit, but has anyone tried connecting an additional stick in addition to whatever HOTAS they're using to use for just operating the LANTIRN stick? I was thinking about connecting just my unused and dusty Cougar flight stick in addition to my Warthog and just use that for when I'm using the LANTIRN functionality. Is this possible?

viacom pro, which is a must-have plugin for voice attack is developing a RIO extension, which hopefully should be available soon.

Yes, listen to what Sandman said. The 3000 series should be insanely good and at less expensive with more bang for your buck - higher physical core count, significantly lower TDP, IPC on par with Intel's 9900K, PCIe 4.0 support, and it'll be on 7nm. Intel will not ship a mainstream cpu on 10nm at the earliest till sometime in 2020. Also consider that ED is eventually moving DCS to the Vulkan API, which will allow DCS to maximize all physical cores. i.e, the more cores the better the performance. Ryzen will offer at least 12 core/24 thread cpus with equal if not better IPC's than Intells 9900k for $330 US compared to Intells $550 US 14nm 9900k @ 8/16. With the money you save in cpu costs, you can throw into a better GPU. Wait till July. It'll be worth it.

I believe that engage switch is the way to do it, but I think the tolerance before it breaks autopilot is pretty low compared to other jets. Did you turn on the three SAS switches just forward of that panel where the engage switch is located?
-
Guage it on the situation. If on the carrier, loaded with ordinance, shorter runway, just adjust the flaps manually to the circumstance. On an empty jet with a decent length of the runway, you don't really need flaps; just start your roll at 140-150 knots and she'll fly off the runway. If you need more lift just manually bring flaps down accordingly to give yourself some more lift.

The trigger is for forward firing weapons, so you need to use the trigger for all missiles: sidewinder, aim, Phoenix. Also, it takes a bit of time before the weapon leaves the rail. It's not instantaneous, so hold the trigger until you hear and see the weapon contrails.

I think VR and readability will be an issue until the hardware/HMD's improve. However, I do think the devs can ease up a bit on the weathering of the cockpit consoles. It should look used and dated, but not the point where the text is illegible. I think there is a fine line that's not easy to achieve between weather-beaten and just too clean to the point of looking unrealistic. I think HB did an amazing job on the cockpit but the wear could be dialed down just a notch or two. I do think this will become a moot point once everybody learns and remembers where the gauges and switches are in the cockpit.

How long till its pushed to the stable build?
DocSigma replied to DocSigma's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I have an extremely fast DL speed, so I just installed the OB on an unused data platter drive - not ideal. As expected, load times are nowhere near those of my app SSD, but not too bad. -
Is this possible? Right now I'm just using the default Jester keypresses: A to bring it up and the individual key presses to cycle the menu. I don't mind using a single keypress (A) to bring it up, but is there a way I can cycle around the radial with my mouse wheel and select that option with either a left click or a middle mouse click. Getting voice attack to work would be ideal, but have never played around with voice attack. Thanks.

All things DCS initially get released to the Open Beta before getting pushed to the stable build. It's out on Open beta and will probably reach the stable build in about 2 - 4 weeks. If you purchased it and have the OB installed, you should see it available to dl in your module manager.

How long till its pushed to the stable build?
DocSigma replied to DocSigma's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Pretty much what I figured. Was hoping since this initial release would be the most vetted since it's been simmering on the stove for the longest period of time as far as feature functionality is concerned, they'd get it out to stable the quickest. Three weeks or four isn't too bad. I know its not the most ideal scenario, but I may just go ahead and pop the OB on my data 1tb, platter, drive and just play around with the F14 on the caucus map to get my feet wet. -
When do you guys think itll get pushed to the stable build of DCS? I used to have an OB install, but after a hardware upgrade and reinstall of windows I didnt bother installing the OB, just the stable build - both builds with every module installed takes up a huge amount of disk space on my SSD. The obvious soln. is to install the ob, but not doing that and will just be patient a bit longer. Anyway, thanks, and a very big congrats to everyone at Heatblur for getting the F14 out the door. The mirage is a good module, but I'd really spend a few extra bucks and get the F-18. I look at this way. Why would you buy a Honda when you can get a Ferrari for a few pennies more?
-
Not sure there is a module just yet that fits your needs - AA and naval. The only two high fidelity modules are the F18 and the F14, and you already noted that you don't want to invest that much. Like others have said, the best fast moving, naval, AA platform we have is the F18 and/or the F14. The closest bird I can think of that at least fits the bill as being a fast-moving AA platform is the Mig21 - it's high fidelity and lacks the creature comforts of the way more modern F18, but itis a fast mover and its primary role is an AA to interceptor with A/G capabilities.
