Kuky Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) damn it... after reading this thread (and thinking about it before also) today I went out and got me a 58" 4K TV, I was bit scared to get one that can't run 60Hz through HDMI so I got one that has Display Port... it wasn't cheap though (which is why I said "damn it" first)... I haven't connected it yet (or turned on) but the image i saw on it in the shop was so perfect I said, what the heck... YOLO :D I'll be changing my triple 27" setup very soon, this thing better we worth it... if not, I just got myself a quite expensive TV which I rarely watch (I either sit on the PC or watch movies on projector screen) PS: things like this also make me realise I have entered that dreaded mid-life crisis... it's as bad as people have said it would be... you want to try to live your life and enjoy the things you couldn't afford when you were young(er) but now you can, before you get even older and can't... what the heck, right? *Rage* Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I currently run a 30" 1600p monitor. Ill be looking to upgrade to a ~50 inch 4k tv/monitor for my pit. I did some googling and got lost in a sea of HDMI 1.4, displayport, 30hz vs 60hz, upscaling, downsampling etc etc. Can someone spec me a suitable 4k 60hz tv that can connect to a PC? Happy to wait for a few months if new technology or pricesare on the horizon. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22

Highwayman-Ed Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Its model: TC-58AX800U: http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-58AX800U So, how is it? :pilotfly: Give it to me straight, is DCS a slideshow at 4k with the same settings you had before? Intel i9-9900KF @5.2GHz MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon 32GB G.Skill Trident Z DDR3200 RAM MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio 40" Panasonic TH-40DX600U @ 4K Pimax Vision 8K Plus / Oculus Rift CV1 / HTC Vive Gametrix JetSeat with SimShaker Windows 10 64 Bit Home Edition [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Kuky Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 With exact same game settings, it runs bit better... Not by a lot but it's better. I think it's because even though it's more pixels to run it's only 1 viewport vs 3 I had before. After going onto settings I found out my PC sees this tv as 2 monitors, in eyefinity. The image on the tv is really good I have to say that... But I am bit unlucky as within 30 min of having it on, I saw 2 stuck pixels ... I can't be bothered to go and return it for another one so I'll just live with it (but this is not nice considering I paid good money for it... I guess 8million pixels or so it has there is good chance some could be faulty... It's just my luck I guess. One thing I don't like now is the stretching the game makes when having bit higher FoV... Everything has some trade off. I have started to change my flying setup more, I want to fix the tv bit lower (on desk it sits too high) I'll try putting one of the 27" bit below the tv to see if it's good extracting instruments on it... So no PC use for a few days for me. Was it worth it? I am not really sure to be honest, The image is really excellent... At 80 deg FoV everything is nice and clear and readable, and cockpit feels more life-size... I just dislike the DCS stretching on sides with higher FoV, the tv price and those damn 2 stuck pixels... And I feel bit guilty for spending so much on my hobby... lxsapper Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Kuky may I make a sugestion? If it was me I would make calculations to figure how much of my real FoV that display is really covering and use only that value. Stretching should be a lot less noticible that way. It's a bit hard to belive that with even with such a large display that it's covering 80º of your real FoV. I know it can be tempting to use a higher FoV to be able to see more but I think it would be more enjoyable to match it. I'm speaking against myself here a little. Because I also have a higher FoV on my screen than the real FoV it covers. But I'm only using a 32" display at about 1m away, I can't remember what that figures to now, but I found it to be too funnel vision like to use effectively in combat. But I think if I had a 58" screen I would for sure be using matched FoV.
Kuky Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Yes, I will probably have to reduce FoV to 70° or so. aeliusg Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Kuky, how far away are you sitting? Part of the advantage of 4K is that since the pixels are so small, you can sit closer without seeing the screen-door you get with a regular HD screen of that size; then, the extra FOV is appropriately in your peripheral vision. Does wonders for your sense of speed. If you can suspend your disbelief a little, of course, as you're still looking at a flat two-dimensional image.
Kuky Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Can't sit too close, I think I am about 1m away from the screen. PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
lxsapper Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 70º shouldn't be too bad. But at 1m away correct FoV would be +- 65,5º.
Sabre-TLA Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Found this info recently and thought it would be useful for this discussion. It has some good detail about what the eye can discern at different distances. I think most of us do sit close to our monitors (my 47" LG is about an arm's reach away). It looks great too at 1920x1080 but I'm wondering if a 4K monitor at the same distance would be better. According to the charts in the article it would. MapleFlagMissions - Read Our Blog for Updates

lxsapper Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Excelent tool Highwayman! I usually draw it all by hand in sketchup and then use the protractor. But this saves time.

Was it worth it? I am not really sure to be honest, The image is really excellent... At 80 deg FoV everything is nice and clear and readable, and cockpit feels more life-size... I just dislike the DCS stretching on sides with higher FoV, Kuky, I'm confused at your comment about stretching at high FOV. As you of course know, I too switched from a 3-screen-wide config to a single 4K monitor. I use a 107-degree default zoom in A-10C -- right at the point that the outside of the canopy frame touches the edges of the monitor -- and I don't feel like there's any noticeable stretching at all. Certainly not compared to what I got used to with the 3-screen setup, where the side screens honestly looked pretty bad. You say even at 80 FOV it appears stretched; how are you measuring FOV? From 'viewAngle' in entry 13 of the A-10C block in Saved Games\DCS\Config\View\SnapViews.lua?
Kuky Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 107° default FoV? Can't be that high, I think most aircraft have around 70-80° default FoV. I have set 80° for all aircraft, but then the game zooms out a bit also, so likely it ends up bit more... it could be I zoomed out tad more with mouse scroll wheel to try wider FoV so I saw the stretching again (which I hate), I have a feeling you don't use too high FoV (definitely not 107°) if you say you don't see any stretching on edges.... heck I even saw it on instruments down low (the round gauges didn't look circular towards bottom of the screen). But anyway, I have taken everything apart 2 days ago and I am slowly changing my flying setup so I can't check anything now as everything is all over the place in the house :music_whistling: so I can't tell you exactly what I've done or re-check again... I hope I get it connected again coming weekend... still thinking how I'm gonna mount the TV to the flying setup and ditch the table it was on (don't need it any more). GregP Posted September 10, 2014 Author Posted September 10, 2014 OK but, where are you getting that 80 FOV value from? How do you know you're using 80?
Kuky Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I set it in that Saved Games\DCS\Config\View\SnapViews.lua file... section 13, that one is default view setting when you enter aircraft.
