What are the ugliest jet fighters ever built?

Purely subjective and for fun here.:smilewink:

2 off the top of my head are the F-89 Scorpion and the F-102 Delta Dagger (that big triangle tail gets me every time).

Hehe, some call them ugly, some call them beautiful or at least cool.

For me the A-10 and F-117 are in the category "not beautiful but cool"

Most people call the A-10 ugly. And I have to agree it might not be the most intriguing design. The F-4 and the F-105 are also often called ugly, but I strongly disagree there. Well, maybe not too strongly in case of the F-105... :D

The X-32 is on my list, together with the Sea Dart and the somewhat ugly Saab Viggen (don't know why I dislike it. I love the other Saabs (except the Tunnan). The F-16I is also an abomination IMO.

EDIT: Forgot the Skyray. I don't like that one. Its wings don't fit to its fuselage.

Although aerodynamic things tend to be more or less beautiful usually, it certainly isn't impossible to design ugly aircraft and there have been way too many samples to list here =P.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but there are far worse looking things out there which would make Lightning and X-32 look pretty. And I don't think F-102 is really ugly.

Agree about F-89 though, but I think F-84 is even uglier. While I know it has it's fans, I also find Buccaneer to be a bit on the horrendous looking side.

There quite a few French protype jets that are quite misshapen. Among all of them though, I think Leduc 010 takes the cake for being the ultimate airborne WTF.

On the Soviet side, there's IL-102, which is based on just as ugly IL-40.

Yeah, jet fighters all look pretty sleek because of aerodynamics.

The ugliest fighters ever are before the jet age IMO. For example those assymmetric german ones.

and while not really a true jet (it is a turboprop) I have to the nominate the Fairey Gannett as it is truly a hideous looking machine.

Any plane that evolved with cases and bottles around it gets ugly

like this creature. The bulges seems glued by a drunkard and shaped without any relation with the plane. Also check the silly air-intakes/exhausts on the tail ugly addendum. A nightmare... a beautiful shape utterly destroyed.

Or planes thought from "engineering" perspective up... and they get skewed and elongated and things added along the way. Like C-101 end here.. elongated probably after they figured out it will fall on its nose and all those shapes and bulges around the tail:

versus (sorry I could be biased) this smooth line (probably left "pure" because lack of money for development/uglying)
