Bushmanni Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Here's a video inspired by the discussion about sense of speed in DCS. I started to experiment flying low with wide FOV and immediately realized that it would make a cool video. 2 DCS Finland: Suomalainen DCS yhteisö -- Finnish DCS community -------------------------------------------------- SF Squadron

Bushmanni Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 I had several earlier versions of this as the track name implies that had either sloppier flying or less interesting route. I fixed the view direction for the youtube version as in the original I was looking little to the left for the whole flight that looked stupid and didn't fancy to do it again just for that. The track has the flight recorded just as I flew it.Sense of Speed_better_most_best_RAW.trk DCS Finland: Suomalainen DCS yhteisö -- Finnish DCS community -------------------------------------------------- SF Squadron

Bushmanni Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 The ground clutter does help a lot with sense of speed but the most clear this was when flying past an apartment building. The windows were about the right size and had high contrast so that your peripheral vision can easily track them. The ground clutter is too small and doesn't have enough contrast so that it would be still clearly visible at the FOV edges. If clutter would have shadows that might help but I don't know how bad performance hit it would cause. In this video you can see that DCS has the sense of speed spot on correct. Adjust your speed and FOV the same as in the video and you get similar result. But the difference in this is that the ground has more distinguishable details as the ground and clutter have sharp edged shadows. If there was overcast clouds I would suspect the terrain would be harder to "track". Cali Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Bush, that's a good video, I just wish it was higher quality. I still think the speed could be sped up a tad bit. From seeing videos and having flown in a jet, that's my opinion. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED

Vekkinho Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 scary! I never realised there's so much to see in Sochi and Adler when you're 10ft AGL! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
PeterP Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 (edited) Bush, that's a good video, I just wish it was higher quality. I still think the speed could be sped up a tad bit. The track has the flight recorded just as I flew it. Hi - have a little question (I want to ask it here first before I open a new thread in the movie-maker section) : So I downloaded this track. - have made a über view config (with all eye-candy that you can get)- replayed it and saved my own view-motion. Recorded it in über-gross (you know: the crazy Germans! :smilewink:) full-HD quality 1920x1080 - and it is great! - but I still have the "Pull Up!Pull Up!" in it. And I don't want to post it in this way - but I would like to have the engine/wind-sound. (and I dont want to refly this - hell ! Im just too lazy for that.! - not that it is so difficult) I have the strange feeling that it would be enough if I would replace the sound-file of "Pull Up-Pull Up" with a empty/silent one to have this. Now you know that I'm so lazy : Can someone point me which file and (best of all) provide a silent one - so I can re-recorded again ?!! Thanks in advance! Edited August 7, 2011 by PeterP

combatace Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Here's where secret of movie making comes in. You first video as fantastic right from the cockpit lower FOV and low details combined with high speed and it looks as rel and it can be. The second video external view, high FOV more details it looks like some weird arcade game and the plane too looked like a toy, but then your angle was too low. P.S. There is no criticism of your work, just the truth. To support my models please donate to paypal ID: hp.2084@gmail.com https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/hero2084?referral=hero2084

Madman777 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I had a friend watch me fly for the first time last week. I was at about 12000 feet. As he watched me fly, he asked me if the sim was paused because "nothing is moving." He said the sense of speed is really bad. Now he's not into sims, so I can understand where he's coming from. He's not used to it...haha. The sense of speed down low is really good, unfortunately, we don't' fly that low very often, so it's kind irrelevant...in my opinion. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules

Madman777 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Has he ever flown in a airplane? Yeah, think he flew in a 747 or something like that. I agree that DCS, at high altitudes does represent the feel or look of flight. For inexperienced people, I can see what they mean. Even in a real airplane in high altitudes it seems like it's not moving very much. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
