Increased overcast draw distance modification

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

This modified ovc.fx shader file will change the draw distance of the overcast from this:

gJ3uo.jpg

to this, the cloud edge now renders into the haze resulting in a seamless effect

QXkVQ.jpg

this has been thoroughly checked for z-issues and FPS and so far the results are very good.

This file also includes the fix for the visible smoke through the overcast as seen in this thread http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1509264&postcount=139

new in v3: included an improvement to the top layer of overcast texture - the result being you can now see the blue sky/sun slowly emerging as you're climbing through the inside of the cloud.

new in v4: adjusted the rendering of the overcast under the clouddeck, now there is no 'bowing' effect where the sea and horizon meet.

Has anyone ever noticed the flat cloud texture above while climbing through the overcast? if so, i think i might be onto a solution ;)

edit: v3 uploaded to first post, included a clockwise cull to the top layer of overcast texture - the result being you can now see the blue sky/sun slowly emerging as you're climbing through the inside of the cloud.

The layered effect?

Nate

I'm refering the the texture you see when you're above the overcast, previously you could intermittently see this texture as you were climbing through the murk inside the cloud.

Now i've added a CW (clockwise) to the cullmode of that texture so you only see one side of it (when you're above it)

Does this also affect the render distance for the single clouds as in dynamic weather for example? At several times I thought I noticed them popping up in the distance.

Deedle, deedle!

No i'm afraid this is only for the overcast cloud.

It's beautiful. I plugged it in the recommended upgrades post...

Speaking of clouds, is there any way change the LOD on the rendering of individual clouds? I get lots of flipping on nearby clouds...

Soz Mustang, thanks for the great fix, i didnt mean to grant kudos to PeterP with your work, as for badger66 my wishful thinking is for a gorgeous 21 yo olive skinned Madonna serving me cold beer on a surf fishing beach in Northern tropical Australia

Updated to v4 in first post, fixed problem with rendering under the clouddeck - see new screenshots for examples.

edit: forgot to ask, has anyone using this mod experienced adverse FPS issues compared to the stock version? feedback would be valuable.

Thats good, if you get the chance have a look at the latest feature of this update, the sea/horizon blending under the clouddeck.

Really, all of the little tweaks people find should be part of the next version.
