Landing Tutorial: Low Altitude Break Approach

Recommended Posts

Thought this may be interesting for some. It's an effective way to land a fighter if you aren't confident with the stall speed, or if you're carrying bombs it's a much safer way to land.

I recorded and uploaded this because I see a lot of people asking what's the best/easiest way to approach and not stall in the Mustang, and I hope this can be of use to those people.

If anyone has other tutorial requests for any of the DCS Modules, post them here or on my video's comments section and I'll do my best to make them :)

Damn! While I can't land in long straight approach, you land easily in your method. :D

Thanks for the video.

Essentially this is a downwind engine out landing procedure. Very easy to do with only one turn required. It's more difficult with a strong headwind or crosswinds.

Also this procedure is explained in the P-51D flight manual on page 132 through page 134.

Good job on that video !

Nothing is more embarrassing than getting home after a successful sortie ..and smacking the Pony or Dora on the tarmac :(

I have written this before, the most important maneuver of all flying is LANDING.

One should not hesitate and learn how to descent i a shallow glide path or fly the machine of desire at the slow edge of it's envelope.

The real deal is coming in like a mad cow, zoom over the strip, bank hard & slow down while doing a 180° turn, descent and finally touch down with some smoke & grace and ask for a cold beer.

nice military approach.

take care to keep 150 before last turn without pushing throttle.( to idle as said) to do it, a high approach like that and diving the nose enough, helps. Visibility is quite good with these tips.

the Pony with full flap decrease speed quickly

Well done, however pilots with low flight time may find that the proposed approach may require good control of power setting/altitude and attitude of the aircraft. Perhaps a more conservative landing for low hours pilots is recommended. But after all it is a break approach, so lets practice.
