PFunk1606688187 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I think interactive tutorials condition individuals to expect magic when they refuse to RTFM. :wassat: Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
MadDog-IC Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I found it while randomly scrolling through some sites: I am sure he isnt alone, the voice over did me in also, and all the anacyronisms (hope I spelt that right) is overwelming. Eventually I could listen to the horrible voice after leaving the A10 for a while and coming back to it after a few months, but never did get into it that much, to complicated for me and the cockpit HUD readout is way to squinty for me to able to read, I have to have the zoom right up so my virtual nose is touching the glass. So I had a chuckle to this post. cheers, Ian. Snoopy Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Reading the manual works miracles. It's a study Sim, you can't expect to master it your first few times flying. That's what playstation games are for. v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

Yes, because anyone under the age of 18 is incapable of intelligent thought...what an interesting view you have of the world. And if you are trying to prove that your generation is infinitely more sophisticated you could at least take the time to write properly. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

While there are exceptions to Strut's view I do have to say that this post is extremely ironic considering the first line in your signature.

kontiuka Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Ya, DCS is not for everyone. I tried to get my friend into it with the SU-25T. He liked it but was only interested in guns and rockets. When it came to using any sort of guided weapons or sensors, he totally shied away from it.
outlawal2 Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Yeah I have found that even in the realm of "simmers" there are different levels... Also, it is a rude awakening for folks that have been "Flight Simmers" their whole lives and then when the realism of DCS hits them they are shocked... I think many of us get the mindset that we have simmed for decades so flying the real thing won't be that much more difficult.. I can tell you first hand that this is bull and I was the most shocked and humbled guy around the first time I flew a real helicopter... I was just certain that with my years of experience (simming) flying the real thing would be tough but I would have it down in no time... FAT CHANCE So folks sim for years and then hit DCS and since they can't fly it well then the program is bugged... Ummm. Nope... Flying is NOT EASY "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Cobra847 Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 I had a great chuckle reading about this guys first encounter with DCS! :) Mostly because I had a more or less similar experience. But...the worst part of all of this is the comments going "RTFM". You often see people saying on this forum how DCS is the last great sim, there is a small user base etc. Guess what the whole elitist RTFM / go back to playing CoD attitude doesn't help. Reading the 700+ pages of the manual before you even get to see if flight sims are your thing isn't a realistic expectation for what is an entertainment product. Who here read their first car's manual back to back before driving? Not many I would assume. You probably went for a drive with your dad or played around in a friends car, because 1. its fun to try things for yourself 2. the intricate details are not important early on. Even real pilots in military are put an A-10C to learn how to fly. Being put into a plane mid flight and spouting a whole bunch of acronyms about systems that do things you've never even seen in a sci-fi movie is overwhelming at best. There does come a point where you would read the manual, or watch a video on the details of any of the avionics systems. But not your first flight. Making this sim more accessible is the key to gaining a wider audience, which will benefit everyone. I'm not talking about dumbing it down, but by making it easier for someone to make a transition from games to simulators. Agreed wholeheartedly. Not to say that the tutorials for any of the modules are poor, or anything like that. The game mode is also fairly comprehensive. The 4chan post was not made in jest or malice -- just a humorous greentext of a new user experience. There must be a measure of understanding from the community at how "out there" a sim like DCS is for the average gamer. As for complexity or skill, keep in mind that various competitive games simply draw upon different types of skills or thinking. Games like DOTA2 value tactical thinking, improvisation, reactionary time and talent just as much or even more than the most hardcore simulation.
