Awesome work Grizz!!    Thanks for your work on this.

I was trying to setup a default Profile for ALL aircraft.  But when I right-click on the icon in the SysTray, and select my profile, it crashes with this error:

Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: path

Also, a question:

1. Once a profile is applied for All aircraft, will it be persistent?  ie. Always be set to that profile between DCS closing and starting again?

2. And do we need to have KB running in the systray while we are flying?

1.  Yes it will be persistent until DCS is updated, repaired, or you select a different profile.

2. No, KB does not need to remain open once a profile has been set.

Regarding the error, I will take a look at it this weekend.  The issue is likely related to a 3rd party aircraft.  ED follows the same folder structure with all of their aircraft but don't require 3rd party aircraft to do the same so it can be difficult to code around.  An interesting experiment would to select that profile individually for each aircraft and see which ones cause the crash.

Seems the profile feature is not working since the time ED updated the DCS Kneeboard to be re-sizable and drag-able.

I have not looked at nor used it in a long time, so that very well could be the case.  I am tempted to remove that feature from future builds as it is the most code heavy, difficult to manage, and time intensive feature to keep up to date with DCS updates and new aircraft and mods.  I would be interested to know how many people want to continue using the feature and how many wouldn't mind seeing it disappear.

On my particular case, I have not used that feature in like forever, so I wouldn't mind if it was removed in favor of having a more easily maintainable App.

I like that I can pre-set the size and location of the kneeboard.  I have a 5120x1044 screen, so I like it closer to the center.

Also, by default, it stretch's my HOTAS layouts/diagrams, and I have to move and resize it every time..

Other than that, I don't care about the colors, or creating individual profiles for all the aircraft.  I would just make one or two general defaults..

Maybe after you look into it, if it's not too much of hassle, you could fix it.  So much work was put into it, and the UI works fine.  Just the backend, updating DCS, probably needs work?

Kneeboard Builder Update to Version 1.9.1.1
I also need to note that Kneeboard Builder is now required to be run as an administrator in order to continue accessing and modifying kneeboards that are stored by DCS within the DCS install directory.  The downside is this disables the drag-and-drop feature due to Windows access control restrictions.  I am all ears if anyone knows a solution to this that is not a security risk.

Does this apply to DCS installations that are outside of the default Program Files path? Which should have inherited the CORRECT file access security from the user I setup the drive and installed and run DCS and KB in anyway.
Cheers, thanks and happy to see you back! Take care!

probably not, but I have no way of checking since my DCS is at /program files (because I couldn’t get Dcs-Bios to work properly when DCS was not there).

I'll check anyway.

I for one hope that the drag-and-drop option will remain as it give the coordinates for the wanted placement. Although the application does not update the config file I can take the values and enter them myself in the config file. And then have the kneeboard in CDS on the position I want.

No need for changing standard DCS files.

My DCS install and Saved Games are on two different non-system drives.

@AlaskanGrizzly

By going to your website and downloading the program, the program shows version 1.9.0.0, and not 1.9.1.1.
I've also tried using the kb 'Help > Check for updates'

Am I missing anything?

I have moved from Win10 to Win11 and am setting up my rig.  When I click the 'Build Custom Kneeboard' button, it puts the files in these folders:

  • ..\Saved Games\Data
  • ..\Saved Games\Kneeboard

I thought these folders used to be in these folders:

  • ..\Saved Games\DCS\Data
  • ..\Saved Games\DCS\Kneeboard

I just may be confused, ... or has something changed?

Nothing has changed, KB will use the path that you set on its preferences, on my case it is this:

ERLWQXQ.jpg

The DCS saved games folder can have whatever name you set as long as it starts with DCS: DCS, DCS.Openbeta, DCS World ... on my case I used DCS.296 because at the time I run an older version of DCS alongside 2.9.6

Thanks!  I think I got confused because it says to select your Saved Games directory.

Great software! being using it since last year, really good! I just noticed that I get a Pure Client Script IC check error when using some servers. I assume this is due to the Kneeboard custom positioning. I ask because I was under the impression (I read somewhere) that Kneeboard Builder passed IC checks. is it me doing something wrong or its just a limitation?

thanks!

the kneeboard builder absolutely should pass the IC check because its just a kneeboard. You can click on the red shield on the MP server and it will give you the list of faulty files, so you might want to triple check.

I was about to download the Kneeboard Builder, but I only get a message saying that the page cannot be found. I tried it with multiple browsers.

if you use it just to 'build' a Kneeboard, then yes, you are 100% correct. Thats why I stated in my message that my assumption is that this is due to the custom positioning via profiles in Kneeboard builder which is not a feature everyone uses. You know what feature I'm referring to?

Yes I do, and its position in the viewport handling lua was literally designed to be repositioned and resized via lua script. The simple editing of this shouldnt be enough to kick the IC warning off as it sits in the saved games folder. Specifically its line 33 if you use notepad++.

Now that's interesting. I've never come across anyone who has successfully repositioned their kneeboard without breaking IC. This feature has been asked for too many times to count, so I assume KB still does those edits in the core. Are you saying KB actually saves the changes in Saved Games? Which non one else has gotten to work?
Cheers!

And thats still the case. I can confirm that Kneeboard builder (when using custom positioning profiles) does overwrite a lua file in the core folder. This change breaks IC for servers with the Pure client *SCRIPT* option (which few servers use). There is no way around this.
