Metal Hawk Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 According to this article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2688652/m9icrosoft-indonesia-president-windows-9-will-be-free-to-windows-8-owners.html. Windows 9 will be free for Windows 8 users. If it actually end up being so, what does it mean for modules activations. Will we lose activations for every module we have? I really hope not. Windows 8 was a disaster. I don't want to find my self in a dilemma whether to stay with an OS I don't like and save activations or upgrade and, unnecessary, lose activations.
tintifaxl Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Before you start the OS update, you deactivate each of the modules. After the update you activate them again -> no activasion lost. Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.
Metal Hawk Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 But this way you lose a de-activation. I was hoping for something without a loss. Plus, the more modules someone have the more cumbersome it becomes. And the chances of forgetting to deactivate a module increase. I guess we have to wait and see.
cichlidfan Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 You don't have to wait and see. The answer has been available for years. Your OS is worth three points. An activation will be required if the hardware/software changes exceed 12 points as rated below: • CPU ID: 13 • Windows PID: 3 • Computer Name: 3 • Hard drive volume serial number: 3 • MAC address: 6 • RAM amount: 6 If If you don't want to lose anything then don't change anything on your computer. Metal Hawk Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 WOW! What a rude attitude. Do I really have to know everything? With so many posts from people having trouble and loosing activations, is really a question like this not permitted and deserves a rude response? Should I apologize for being cautious? You don't have to wait and see. The answer has been available for years. Your OS is worth three points. If you don't want to lose anything then don't change anything on your computer. If there is a possibility to upgrade my os and not lose activations who are you to deprive me from that right?
tarracta Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) How I hate this hardware-based activations, this is definitely a security policy out of the last century!!!! Comes directly next to malware-installers like Starforce... Today you offer a user portal (like Battle.net or Steam) and every user adds bought products to his account and can use them, no matter which hardware he currently has got. Countless poeple have multiple PC's, are hardware geeks which are happy to change components very frequently and with this copy protection directly out of the stoneage I've always trouble with this games - and refuse to buy them. Sadly, DCS uses this antiquated methods which don't comply the needs of the present, too. Blizzard & Co are showing how it works. Edited September 29, 2014 by tarracta
G00dnight Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 @ tarracta so you refuse to buy them, if so you don't have any DCS modules, So what are you doing here ?.. 9.JG27 DavidRed Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 what i personally dont really understand is, why so many people are concerned about their activations? if you have used all 10 of a module, it will generate 1each month anyway...how often do guys really change something on their hardware or os?
tarracta Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 @ tarracta so you refuse to buy them, if so you don't have any DCS modules, So what are you doing here ?.. 1) Because I cannot give it up :P 2) At least there is a time limit until activations refreshes But this is big exception, I have dozen of games which could be activated 3 times and then it's over forever. For that this business practice is damnable in general. I buy a game and on which hardware I want to use it is not the business of the game manufacturer.
EtherealN Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Windows 8 was a disaster. hansangb Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 NO, windows 9 will be awesome because it's an odd number release. :) DOS 5 - great. 6, no so much. 95 - good. 98, not so much Win 7 good, 8, no so much. The only exception would be - for me - Windows 2000. Right, so being a flight sim hobbyist (or any game for that matter) should preclude you from being an OS and/or computing hobbyist? Should I really want or have to have two computers to muck around with my systems innards on a more frequent than average basis or repartition or install new hard drives to check out other operating systems? Virtualization makes a lot of that easier these days, but there are still reasons for wanting to mess around, including just simple learning. EtherealN Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 keep windows 7. Computers are not Iphones, just because it is newer, doesnt mean you should A) get it B) asume its better. You do realize that Windows 9 (previously known as 8.2) is an actual desktop OS, right? Full (and customizable) start menu, boots into desktop, etc etc. 8.0 was annoying. 8.1 solved the worst bits. 8.2 (now called 9) solves the rest and gives us a proper desktop OS with all the under-the-hood improvements we liked in 8. SkateZilla Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 My opinion if Windows 8 is that it has some significant improvements compared to Windows 7, however the UI and O/S as a whole felt rushed. (prolly because they rushed it to get Surface Pros on the Market.) Windows 10 is likely what Windows 8 was supposed to be.
