I think it is too early for anyone to answer the question. Then again, I have been using Win 8.1 for quite some time and can't recall the last time I looked at the Metro screen so I don't see why you are still on Win 7.

I'm all for it. It's 8.2 rebranded, which is a pretty good thing actually. Win 8.1 is already quite nice with just a few minor annoyances in the UI that are easily outweighed by the rest of the OS.

Release it with a Surface Pro 4 (with fixed heat and battery life issues) and I will be a happy man. ;)

Why do companies skip numbers???

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

To make the new version APPEAR to be more substantial than it is.. (And sometimes to move as far away from a previous kludge as possible.. )

For the same reason they called Windows 7 "7" instead of Windows Vista SP-whatever. ;)

A brand name got a bad rap, so they rename the update and everyone thinks it's awesome. :D

Only case I can think of where this didn't happen was XP SP3, where the XP platform had a good enough name in the consumer sphere that they had the opposite motivation.

Agreed. I'd say it's slightly less of a big deal for people with SSD's, but the file management stuff alone is awesome on my slower laptop HDD.

I've never actually upgraded an os before, always changed with a completely new PC, is it a huge job?

Back up your data on an external drive, wipe the main drive, install OS, configure and restore files - done.

Installation shouldnt take longer than half an hour, everything else is up to you.

DCS World runs fine on Windows 10 Preview 64-bit ... testing in progress. Quite a bit of customization allowed and IMHO needed to use Win10.

I don't need no stinkin' GPS! (except for PGMs :D) :pilotfly:

Rumor is that it's 10 because of...

if (os.startsWith("Windows 9")

...being used in some applications to detect 95/98 so naming it with the 9 at the start again would cause problems.

Possible alternatives: Windows9, Windows_9, Windows 09, Windows 8++, Windows IX...

That is something hidden behind the scenes. They could just call it Banana in the code and market it as anything they want. I am almost certain this is entirely for marketing reasons. Same reason the XBox 2 jumped 359 versions.

Sorry for the necro-post, but this is by far the best thread I've found to ask if anyone else running Windows 10 has been having problems launching DCS World. It may either load correctly, load very slowly or not load at all seemingly at random.

Graphics drivers and OS have been updated to latest version, as has DCS.

Sometime changing compatibility mode makes it start up fine, but, again, only some times.

I have Windows 10 Tech Preview Build 9860 and Windows 10 preview for enterprise build 9879, both running on VMware and so far I'm quite impressed. I certainly won't be making the jump from Windows 7 to 8.1, but I would certainly consider 10. It's much cleaner and just seems to work even in early builds. I found some issues but that can only be expected. I relation to the ram question, it's running away nicely on 1.5 gig here.

Just doing a test of Windows 10 on my dedicated server now and DCS World works fine as server, not played and 3d render is disabled. Tacview also works fine. Transitioning to Windows Server 2012 R2 sometime next week

Only thing is screen resolution, I did not get DCS World to run on any resolution 1280x720 and below, first when changing to 1600x900 it finally started in SP to access options. What exactly is the lowest resolution to start the launcher on DCS version 1.2.11?
