Yep, now the great debate has moved to how the F-14 module should be priced in the announcement thread. I'll give it a few days, then it'll move to something else. Clearly we have too much time on our hands while waiting for new planes. :P

Changing the subject ... anyone do any air to ground with the Mig 21 in multiplayer?

MORG

Yes.

It's very #difficult because you need to see your target with the Mk1 eyeball before you can engage, by then you're well within range of SAMs, AAA and you don't have much time to line up because #themig21issodamnfast.

Also, dropping bombs accurately with the ASP is hard, cluster munitions don't give a decent spread and the nukes are usually not available for balance reasons.

The only time I've had any success is after SAMs and AAA have been taken out and I can do a low level pass to recce targets before engaging. Grom, S-23/24 + rocket pods usually give best results.

P.S. FAC marking targets with smoke would make it much easier but I've never had this online.

P.P.S. to avoid #difficultygate2.0 I would like to make it clear my comments are about my personal in game experiences. I am not making any comment as to whether flying a computer simulation from my home office on a relaxing weekend while sipping a coffee at a constant 1.0G has any bearing to flying an RL combat sortie.

Hmm, that's weird, for me, the only missiles i can use on the mig-21 without really having to worry about AAA/sams is the grom, it has the range, and you can see, and hit, targets before anything starts shooting at you... the mig-21 is fast, but it also has a throttle and airbrakes...

and yeah, all my opinions and feelings are based on DCS, and DCS alone, not flight manuals, not google... not some other flight sim, and certainly not the real life thing.

What dive angle + IAS do you use the Grom ?

I'm usually at 5 - 10 degrees and 600 IAS. But I suspect that's too slow and shallow. I usually can't get the pipper accurately on the target and undershoot. I'm also usually too close when I release...

Any tips on getting eyes on target at range?

it always undershoots regardless, i use parallax, my habit is to lean to the left, and watch the missileParallax.gif

So you shoot in non-locked on mode and track the missile onto target? Rather than locking the pipper to the target and shooting?

Dive angle and IAS?

no i don't even use the gun sight at all, just turn radar to fixed beam, and launch

good practice take the a-10a and use mavericks without using the little display, once you're good at that, it's easier to see targets and know how far away they are.

you get a picture in your head like this is what a missile looks like when its going to hit... then you just have to duplicate that with the groms lol...

i think their not as accurate as you might think they should be... their more anti-shipping than anti-tank...

might check your graphics settings, i dunno that might have something to do with it?

Realistically, I'm wondering which DCS modules will be better suited against the MiG-21 in multiplayer. Most announced DCS modules have either a nemesis or a counterpart (P-51 vs Bf.109K/FW190D-9, or F-86 vs MiG-15, or F-15 vs Su-27)... so it would only be logical if the MiG-21 had a counterpart as well, done by Leatherneck or any other 3rd Party. Unless a F-4 Phantom is announced (which I doubt will ever happen, but one can dream), I would assume that the F-104 and Mirage F1 (AvioDev), or the Hawk (VEAO) or the L-39 would be reasonable opponents.

What do you folks think?

The EE Lightning is part of VEAO roadmap. Mirage F1 of AvioDev.

Those are two good opponents for the MiG-21, maybe since it's "bis" variant, it will actually have the upper hand for a change against those two.

F-5E Tiger II!!!

Also Mirage IIIE, IAF Kfir and Mirage F1.

Phantom is, of course, top of the list however...

The F-5 Tiger II will be a nice addition, relatively easy to model and pretty close match for the fishbed.

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!

Bagged my first a/a kill in the 21 yesterday on the 104th server, not including the ground attack guys I've killed before.

Intercepted an F-15 that was conning up high and today stumbled upon an F-15 in the mountains. The second one must not have been paying attention because we merged in the same valley and I passed below him initially.

I was recording so videos will follow.

2 kills on 17 MAR & 2 kills today ... I think they were all A-10's. Can't wait to get my TrackIR & HOTAS setup I just bought!

MORG

TrackIR is game changing, you'll never be able to fly without it now.

I nearly got myself a kill on the 104th, flying as low as is humanly possible, spot a big source of black smoke, pull up, begging my R-60M to launch on an unsuspecting 15, and of course his potential wingman bags me with a Slammer.

Leatherneck pls buff

As promised, here's the video of one of the kills from this weekend.

Can I please suggest you take your gun camera off. You don't need it! It doesn't do anything other than obscure your view.

To take it off put the switch immediately left of the IFF decoder on the RH panel in the down position.
