I don't have any trouble just waiting to do a clean install of 2.0 when its all finally ready. I'm not into doing betas.

Well then you definitely do not want to install 1.5 or 2.0, cause if you did, even if just out of curiousity, there is no way in heck you could go back to 1.2.

Look at the 4th post down from Chizh, second paragraph. They have already mentioned that they're going to merge 1.5 and 2.0 some time soon. Wags had mentioned that it should happen some time in January but they didn't give a specific date so it's kind of open at this time. The biggest task they have right now is upgrading the Caucus's map for World 2.

Of course, there is nothing that says they won't insist that a clean install is the only path.

Except that it doesn't make sense.

2.0 was special in that it required a separate installer to configure the autoupdater to make a *separate install* and not overwrite the ongoing open beta of 1.5. You can switch between 1.2 and 1.5 open beta via the autoinstaller to your hearts content and i bet you can do the same with 2.0 if you know how to configure the updater.

There's no apparent technical reason why 2.0 open beta or release would be a fresh install.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Come let's eat grandpa!

As I understand it, and this is just a speculation, nothing more, the 1.2 will be updated to the latest available 1.5 beta in an usual way through the updater, so that both versions will be identical. I hope that most, if not all data will be copied from 1.5 beta install. Since both version will be identical, profiles etc. from beta should work in stable official 1.5.

I also hope that the 1.5 beta will be updated to 2.0 in the same manner, which will make the 2.0 alpha install obsolete and ready to uninstall to finally get some disk space back. :D

Exactly.

Files will be copied from OpenBeta, or OpenAlpha as long as the "Path" can be found in the registry.

So, if you have OpenBeta installed, the actual download size will be about 0 bytes.

If you don't have neither OpenBeta nor OpenAlpha, the DL size for 1.2.16->1.5.2 update will be about 6.1GB for pure World with no modules.

If you have OpenAlpha installed, then 1.2.16->1.5.2 will be about 2.4GB

Good thing I've kept all three versions installed.

Anyone else notice Chizh posted in official updates that 1.2.16 was now released to version 1.5.2? It was up for a few minutes then disappeared.

DCS 1.5 is out of Open Beta with a web installer!!!!!

:):)

Will the installation use a torrent format or direct installation?

Not so fast :)

It will, once we fix the servers.

The installer will come in the same form it was for openalpha: it installs just the updater, icons and readme, and starts a regular update.

So no point to use it if you have 1.2.16 installed - it will update automatically.

Good deal, once 1.2 gets updated to 1.5 I will be down to only two installed versions.

Progress !

I do not want to update my 1.2.16 version.

I want to do a vanilla installation of 1.5.

What I need to do for that?

Since the big release seems imminent, I was wondering about the updater - will it automatically delete unused files from the original 1.2.16 installation in order to de-cruft the install and save some space?

The full installers for DCS World and the modules usually show up shortly after the update starts going out. On some occasions it has been a day, or two, later.

Ah ok then, I was assuming when it went to 1.5 stable release the open beta was finished.

Good thing I have the space.

I would imagine that we will have three installs until the Open Alpha is merged into the Open Beta.

The most easy way is to copy (copy, not move) your 1.2.16 to a separate folder, say, 'DCS World 1.2.16' and let the original one to update to 1.5.

If you want to get a really pure 1.5 install and still save about 12 GB of downloads, then:

1) install 1.5 release into a separate folder

2) uncheck 'Start Download' box (!) at the last page

3) create a file dcs_local_source.txt in the 1.5-release install folder and paste a path to the original 1.2.16 install - this will pick unchanged files from 1.2.16 saving you about 12 GB worth of downloads

NOTE: save dcs_local_source.txt in UTF-8 encoding.

4) run 'Update DCS World' for you new 1.5-release install.
