NeilWillis Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 "While the decision ultimately lies with Pentagon leadership, Carlisle said that he believes the retirement of the A-10 could be delayed by a few years to make sure the Air Force has the number of planes it needs — especially since top brass is re-evaluating the number of F-35’s (planes intended to replace the A-10) that the U.S. will purchase." Doesn't sound to me like the decision made here is final.
StandingCow Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Even though the retirement is postponed, it's only a matter of time... probably be retired within the next 5 years.. if not earlier. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo

AlphaOneSix Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Well remember that "indefinite" means "not definite", meaning it's still on the outs, they just don't know when.

joey45 Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 They are really pushing the airframes flying hours.. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. SkateZilla Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Yeah they gotta be up there.... unless they order another framw overhaul or new frames, the numbers will dwindle as airframes age out. Sierra99 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 They are really pushing the airframes flying hours.. Don't forget...The B-52 is still in service 60 years after joining the fleet. It's in service because it is still a viable platform for the mission it was designed and a suitable replacement hasn't been built. The same thing could very easily happen with the A-10. Id be willing to bet the Warthogs in service today are in better shape than they were 20 years ago. Wing replacements and structural upgrade programs were started long before short sighted politicians started scheming to shelve the Hog to justify the F-35. The A-10 has no equal as a CAS aircraft and the Avionics and Weapon Systems have been upgraded to the point they are on par with the Mudhen and Viper. Finally no matter how you slice it it the A-10 is is an extremely cost effective aircraft to operate. I wont argue the A-10 will need to be replaced someday...but I am of the opinion it will be sooner than later. Depending on who wins our Election in November...It may last until its original estimate service life of 2028. Snoopy Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Snoopy what was considered "Really High Hours" and were any other specific criteria used to decide an air frame was ready for DM? Sierra It appeared on the surface to be high hours was the main factor. We sent birds with 15,000 (which is almost 4 times the planned life) and got aircraft with 8,000. v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website
