I have found an odd byproduct of this tool. Love using it for controlling my DCS systems but after each time I start the utility the Ria Software inc folder in my registry has to be deleted to run Tacview. Not sure the reason behind this but it is the only correlation I can find between when I have to delete the folder.

this app does not touch the registry

I understand but here is how I came to that conclusion. If I delete that folder in the registry I can launch and use tacview as often as I want. If I launch DCS from the ED shortcut same. If I launch the updater tool Tacview brakes and the only way to fix it is with the registry. I am not sure it is the utility directly but this is repeatable.

I have a quick question please...I just re installed windows and DCS.....Now, everytime I restart the PC, I have to re select the build and the folder paths in the utility, before I can use it......it does not seem to save my choice....am I doing something wrong?

FYI the DCS update Utility does not have the AH-64 Apache in the aircraft / modules listed, at least I have searched the latest version I could find.

the program has been used by thousands of players for 9 years! It's not open source, and TBH the ability for people to review source and an informed judgement on it's safety is pretty terrible, even if they are skilled in that kind of analysis.

I don't see how sharing the source code does anything for you, it's not opensource and not planned to be.

Seeing that there's over 45,000 Downloads between here and the other server (And that doesn't count 8 years of pervious versions), w/ no Malicious Software warnings (outside the occasional false positive).

Then I don't know what to tell you.

I seem to have a new bug report.  Utility no longer launches model viewer after 2.8.1.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

This is a Global issue, with even the Re-Build version I'm working on,

Something was changed w/ 2.8.1 in regards to qt platform, I will look into it further in my build, but as stated, the current version is legacy code and has been archived.

** The Error is because qwindows.dll no longer has a Version # in the DLL in the /bin/ Folder.
1. Delete this file.
2. /bin/platforms/, right click the qwindows.dll file make sure it has a version number.
3. paste in /bin

I believe it's an older file, but shouldn't hurt anything, I will have to see if no version is intentional or not, if it is, I will have to recode the Qt Platform check.

I am still trying to find out the source of why folders don't populate in the browse folder dialog, MS says it's a end user folder problem, seems to happen on systems where the user has moved their saved games / my documents folders or have some time of desktop/remove networked folders.

Assuming the App can't find your saved games folder, have you dont anything to your User Profile? (Moved it to another location etc etc).

This is almost offensive to the utility's author ... this is a mature and free tool, if you don't trust it then simply don't use it, but don't go around asking for its code source  to be "donated". 😝

Something I don't quite understand is what the location of the 'Saved Games' folder should be.  I know that Windows has a default folder called 'Saved Games' in the User folder, but I assumed I could create (should?) one on my faster D drive.  When I did the fresh install of DCS I told the installer to create that folder.
I don't recall moving my Updater user profile (if that's the one you're asking about.)

I don't have any mapped network drives, just two M.2 drives (C: and D:)

I will say that when trying to get Helios to work right (and not knowing that C:\users\xxxx\Saved Games was a default Windows folder, I deleted it.
It rebuilt when I did the fresh install of DCS 2.8.

"Saved Games" is a special windows folder, like "My Documents", "My Pictures", etc. You can't create it with windows' file management tools. If you want to place it somewhere else, you should move it using its properties sheet:

So when I installed DCS I should have pointed to the default Windows Saved Games folder, instead of creating one on another drive?
Should I just delete the one I created on the D drive?  Will my DCS saved game data then be written to the one Windows creates?

DCS By Default saves data to /Drive:Root/Users/<%Userprofile%>/Saved Games/DCS.<branch>/.

There is no way to simply change that, so unless you did some user Profile Moving in windows setup, then that's where it is.

I'm starting to see what is confusing me.  When I moved DCS from my old laptop to my new computer, I must have somehow created a Saved Games folder on the new D drive.  I was confused because after moving the files I saw DCS and Updater subfolders both there and in the default directory.  When I deleted DCS on the new computer I also deleted the C:\users\xxxxx\Saved Games folder.  When I reinstalled DCS Windows recreated the default folder.

I had created a Saved Games folder on the D drive, but now I see there's nothing in it.  I just deleted it.  Thanks for clarifying this for me.

I was operating under the assumption that having both the program and the Saved Game data files on a separate data drive was the right thing to do.

Looks like that's not possible - and not necessary.

Can you clarify one more thing?  When you say 'Profile' which one are you talking about? Windows user profile?  Something else?
I definitely haven't done anything to my Windows profile.  It's a brand new Win 11 install and I use my Microsoft account, not a local account.

I got your updater working.
The problem was I needed to drill down one more folder to have it recognize the Saved Games path.

I was pointing to c:\users\xxxx\Saved Games
I needed to point to c:\users\xxxx\Saved Games\dcs.openbeta

Still can't browse.  I manually entered the paths.

You may want to consider switching to a local account ... the Microsoft account has a lot of downsides:

"Cons of Logging in With a Microsoft Account

Some of the downsides of using a Microsoft account to log in to your Windows computer include:

Hackable: Microsoft stores your account info on the internet, so if someone hacks your account, the hacker gains access to your computer and every Microsoft service you use.

Internet needed: Logging in to your computer when you're offline requires an extra step to confirm that you want to use the latest saved settings.

Shared password: If you share a Microsoft login with anyone, they have access to your Microsoft services, and they can view any sensitive information stored there.

Less privacy: Microsoft saves your computer settings, computer usage, sites you visit, and apps you use on their servers.

Synced settings: Settings automatically sync on all devices that use your Microsoft account.

Locked out of all accounts: Being locked out of your Microsoft account also means you're locked out of all devices you use with that account. It takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to recover your Microsoft password."

When you install Windows the use of a MS account used to be optional, but not anymore ... Windows will not let you install without a MS account ...

fortunately, there is a trick to circumvent thos: Install windows with your PC not connected to the internet

(rj45 cable unplugged or when asked to connect to a wifi network tell the installer you have no wifi)

I have used MS account on Windows for years without any issue. Far from being a ‘con’, syncing between devices is an essential for me.
Syncing all Onedrive files and relocating Windows system folders to OneDrive has also been a major boon.

Each to his own, I guess.

I'm at risk of having accounts hacked no matter what I do - unless I completely disconnect.

Internet needed: Logging in to your computer when you're offline requires an extra step to confirm that you want to use the latest saved settings.
I'll never use this gaming computer unless it's connected to the internet.

Shared password: If you share a Microsoft login with anyone, they have access to your Microsoft services, and they can view any sensitive information stored there.
I don't share my MS login.

Less privacy: Microsoft saves your computer settings, computer usage, sites you visit, and apps you use on their servers.
I've been using Google, Amazon, and a bunch of other servers for years.  Microsoft is no more nefarious than any of them.

Synced settings: Settings automatically sync on all devices that use your Microsoft account.
This is the only computer I own or work on that I use my MS account.  Local or domain logins on everything else.
I sync OneDrive files with my Office365 apps, Google across multiple computers, and sync Apple files as well.

Locked out of all accounts: Being locked out of your Microsoft account also means you're locked out of all devices you use with that account. It takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to recover your Microsoft password."
Hopefully that never happens.  Try losing track of your Apple password....😆

I've done that on new Win10 builds when I wanted a local account.  I know they made it a little harder on Win11.  I made a conscious decision to use my MS account on this one.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You can still use OneDrive with a Local Windows account, I use it that way. I don't see the need to store all Windows System Folders on the cloud, I store there just the /Saved Games/DCS/ folder, by means of an mklink.

I like having all my system folders - including ‘Saved Games’ - available on all devices. It means I can see my pictures, documents, music, saved games etc. available at all times on all devices.
Also, an internet connection is not required as all files are stored locally as well as syncing with the cloud if an internet connection is available.
