It looks so great how a person describe the cockpit and hands moves naturally, but when hands needs to touch mouse, immersion breaks...

To be fair, I don't find that using the mouse breaks immersion, when I fly the Huey with my DK2, yes obviously it would be better to interact direct with the switches using your hands, but sadly tech isn't there yet. But believe me, no monitor has ever given me vertigo before.

The DK2 has though. :D it's a whole new experience, even using the mouse. I can't wait to test the gazelle with it.

For me, using the mouse with the pilot's body on breaks immersion. It really trips me up when I reach over but the avatar doesn't. I prefer being a ghost and flying in the empty cockpit.

Wouldn't it be better for the immersion if the viewpoint roll axis is centered to the helicopter one? E.g. currently if the helicopter rolls to the right, the camera stays horizontal (as your head is horizontal) so you have to roll your head to the right which is very awkward.

Hey guys....So I'm the guy who flew that video. I currently have about 6 hours in the Gazelle using the Rift and can tell you she looks amazing. In fact Matt Wagner in the live stream (around 57 minutes in) mentions that the Gazelle is his favorite module to fly with the CV1 (the production version of Oculus Rift).

The Oculus Rift for thos who haven't used one yet, tricks your body very nicely. I know in my head that I'm in my pit sitting - but when you take off in a helicopter: your body feels it. It's an amazing experience. I especially find that helicopters enduce this response alot more then jets. I usually only jet that feeling when upsidedown in a jet.

As far as using the mouse and immersion - I would probably agree. That's why I use a trackball. Some airline cockpits use trackballs for input so it's something that fairly easy to use. On most flights I rarely have to use it since I have pretty much everything I need mapped to my joysticks.

I am planning on making another Gazelle video with the Rift that I'm hoping to shoot this week sometime. So stay tuned. But in the meantime, if you have any questions about the Gazelle with the Rift....fire away. I'm here to anwer them.

I love how I got an email telling me there will be an update on my shipping date. So today I got the email telling me about my shipping date (4/18-4/24). Thankfully I have my DK2 to keeps me busy, otherwise I'd be going nuts by now.

Thank You for the video.Mid July shipping date for me.

Ok so i ask: what is your system spec and your in-game setting? I notice that it (seems) to run very smoothly.

My CPU is an i-7-4700k running at 4.0 ghz if I recall right. GPU is a GTX 980 (you need a 970 or better for rift). 16 GB of fast ram, ssd hard drive for OS and Flight sim.

In DCS all settings are on high. Although I find that I couldn't really tell the difference between medium and high with the rift.. On low I noticed things didn't render until the last second...so flying low with a helicopter in a city is dangerous as a building will pop up right in front of you.

On the Gazelle the guages were easy to read compared to other modules. Pretty much was able to do everything without issues.

Wouldent this work for the DCS? https://www.leapmotion.com/ a Swedish company uses one like these to get the hands showing in his Heli sim with the DK2.. Would save the immersion i think. [ame]

Ok, thank you for your answer. I have an i5 4690K @ 4,3/4,5ghz, coupled with a GTX 970 and 16Gb RAM @ 2133 mhz, that should do the trick. I'm thinking seriously about getting both....Gazelle first, I think I will wait a bit for the Rift. This must be a great experience!

Poly_Roie, sounds awesome. I'm really looking forward to flying the Gazelle in VR!

I've seen LeapMotion before but not sure it has DCS support. Would be awesome though.

Don't forget you also need 4 USB 3.0 slots. I bought a PCIe card with 5 USB 3.0 ports for like 30 bucks. That way I can keep all my oculus stuff on the same bus and not slow down all my other devices.

Was not aware of that. Thank's for advice.

how did you fix that trackball on your legs. I think that s gonna be necessary for any VR setup.

I ordered my CV1 after watching your video. I wont receive it before August unfortunately, but i want to be ready from say one! :)

Sadly that trackball isn't fixed to my leg...but since you mentioned it, I'm going to work on it. You know how many times that trackball has fallen and then the ball parts goes missing? More then I care to share....but it's a lot. So I'm thinking a little Velcro on the bottom and stitched to the flight suit should work.

The CV1 blew me away yesterday. I saw the reviews but it's hard to imagine a 3D world in a 2D video. It blew my expectations out of the water. Flying with her is amazing. Not only that, but DCS 2.0 alpha has a great new interface for the rift that makes it easy to use. I'm going to see if I can do a big flight this weekend and test out all the modules with her.

Besides DCS, it came with some free games that show off the technology. It's amazing in every sense. Even the kid games that I figured that I wouldn't be interested in were amazing.
