Hello People,

I guess this kind of question has been asked plenty times before, but I couldn't find a definite answer, looking through the forums.

I have a GTX 970, 16 GB of RAM and a Xeon E3-1231 v3, which basically is an i7 4770 (no K) with the integrated graphics removed (and 100$ cheaper).

Now these specs are quite enough to play DCS 1080p on the highest settings and would be enough to play on a 1440p display also i suppose, but are they enough for VR?

Also I was wondering if VR incerases the load on the CPU (even more?!) or more on the GPU over non-VR DCS.

Thanks!

you'll need to overclock the GTX970 to get to a proper frame rate.

the problem is that unlike normal screens, where you can drop down to 20fps from time to time and it will be OK, with VR you must stick above 45FPS for as much time as you can. and while dropping to 30 is acceptable, you want to make sure it is kept to the minimum, and you don't drop below that.

you can use the DSR feature on the Nvidia driver to push up your resolution to 4k (which will be closer to the render target you will need for a VR HMD). play around with the settings, to get the framerate and you'll get the rough estimate on what to expect visual quality wise.

I'm using an OC'd 2600K and OC'd 970. it's not perfect, and I'm running 45-30 fps, (optimal will be 90fps). But it's reasonable, and the immersion is great. but the instruments are very very hard to read. (don't forget that the resolution needs to cover 100 degrees FOV)

Awesome! Thanks for the answers. Gonnas start scraping Money together then.

Still I'm wondering if gpu or cpu is more important in vr in relation to normal dcs. Say your system works perfectly non-VR and struggles with the rift, what would you upgrade?

You have pretty close to the same setup I do, and I get respectable frame rates with midrange settings in VR. The load is on the GPU, not the CPU.

yes

my system. 4771 i7 32gb ram and msi gtx970. no overclocking, medium graphics quality set in dcs,

i would say sufficient and a good experience up to pixel density of 1.5,(which i recommend at least,2.0 would be better but isnt fluently playable with these hardware)

Have fun with your rift, i would never ever use a normal display again.

Initially I was running on a 780 without too much problems with my Rift. I never got to see how it reacted to pixel density changes since I installed a 1080 in it's place before those changes were made in DCS.

Hi,

I have similar config GTX 970, i7 4790, CV1 etc..

I try to play with 1.3 PD as on 1.0 I can't read the HUD(A-10C).

Config is on minimum, textures are on high otherwise the cockpit is ugly.

My problem is when I look at my "6" the render needs to catch up and I look at a black void for 0.5 sec(not always but often) and I see the oculus sandtimer very often(like in every 10 sec and it causes a "micro" lag ~0.2sec). I somewhat adapted to it but it is so bad sometimes(usually in multiplayer) that it is too much. Others said they are fine using the 970 so I'm wondering if they don't talk about this problem or something is wrong with my config.

Any idea what can be the problem?

I see the sandtimer in other games too but rarely.

GTX 970 overclocked but the results were the same without overclocking.

Temps are fine my PC is "overcooled".

I would add to all of the above, it depends GREATLY on where you fly. Most areas in NTTR should run just fine on moderate settings (45fps). Vegas itself can be a problem, but still very playable.

But in 1.5, you will need to choose where to fly. If you fly around Kutaisi your fps will suffer, sometimes enough to make it not worth playing. Sometimes it's "ok". I could never figure out what the fps killer was in that region.

But around Krasnodar, it's a solid 45-90fps all the time.

I think the DCS engine needs optimising pretty badly, but the maps clearly make a massive difference to performance also. Hope 2.5 has a well ported map!

Good to know but my main problem is the "oculus sandtimer" then the game freezes(for ~0.2sec) and it really kicks you in the brain in VR, low fps is unpleasant but not a real issue for me. I have 16GB of RAM too but I run the game from a 5200rpm HDD maybe it is not loading the map to the memory in time... I will try it with an SSD(However the game should not freeze when it doesn't have the assets). Actually I didn't have this freeze problem without VR so I don't think this is the issue but worth a shot.

So the question is does anyone have this lag/freezing/sandtimer issue?

Off topic: Hopefully they can optimize it as you don't see that far in VR so probably LOD threshold can be reduced. And some smart scaling would be nice to see instead of model enlargement: after a distance it is enough to render the plane as a dot and as it is further it could fade out to somewhat emulate real seeing - further -> harder to spot.

I have a very similar system, also the 970 and VR works perfectly.

can you see objects with your MFCDs in the A10 or Skval in the case of the Ka-50?

well I cant when in VR and that pretty much makes gaming in vr with gtx 970 useless.

my system is i7 4790k 16GB RAM and GTX 970

vr here in DCS is out of reach unless I upgrade my video card, which is what I think anyway?

I'm using Lenovo explorer, could this be my problem? or the video card!

I had I7 4790 with gtx 970 and it barely can take it. Everything to low/off PD 1.3 and dense areas still drops below 45fps.

Also some more demanding modules like mig-21 or Hornet will constantly drop below 45. You will be very dependable on the mission complexity and be able to fly mostly simple missions with less units and triggers.

When there are a few smoking/burning units on the ground fps starts to drop, with ka-50 when you shoot vikhrs, the smoke they produce makes the frames drops significantly which gives you noesea and frustration for 5-6 seconds with every vikhr shot.

Overall it will be somewhat playable but it becomes very annoying experience. I got pissed off and a few weeks ago spent 2000 euros for a complete new system with 8700k and 1080ti and voala, completely different world.

Thanks for the reply, but can you see targets with your targeting pod while in VR? and read texts of the instruments?
Pretty much yes.
