Personally I'm not surprised at all about the Hornet, 2016 did seem way too far fetched of a timeframe. Same for the carriers. It's the 2.5 delay the main bullet point I think.

Again, we'll have to wait for clarification or similar.

I´m a little bit worried.

If early access to Normandy map is going to happen this year but not the 2.5 unification that allows multiple maps on the same DCS installation what is going to happen?

Three different instalations each one with one map?

Not the best movement from ED.

My guess is they'll add Normandy as an additional map module to the Alpha branch (what is now 2.0).

It makes the most sense, that may even give them some time to test the whole "map as modules" framework without putting their main Caucasus content on the line.

Its been discussed elsewhere that it could be added to 2.0.

2 months ago the weekend update said "We expect to release 2.5, final NTTR, and Normandy map this yr."

That's not a solid release date but an estimate to me.... and hey, 2 out of 3 aint bad.

This doesn't add up.... they kept saying 2.5 was slated for this year. And in this Friday's update they listed how to load forests and converting some of the old items over as the biggest things to get done for 2.5. That's not much.

Ughhh

I do not know what to say. I'm torn between support and criticism. I love the DCS and modern planes (fighter jets) and foremost because of that I bought modules since the time FC. Now ED turned to the past and develops WWII Normandy map and so much more developer power directed to these projects. I waited to merge all to the DCS 2.5 and has now been postponed to. ED promised many things, such as a stable multi player and dedicated server, etc. How it looks like none of it. For me it's not good news. Because of all that for months I didn't started simulation. And I no longer buy modules because with ED all late and is postponed... :(

Well as far as I've seen most of the work for Normandy has been done by modelers and map creators, two things that have probably little to do with the more engine related tasks they're facing for 2.5.

Since you're here, why was it that the Russians forums were given clear cut answers, while the English userbase was left trailing behind more vague statements? No negativity meant, just a honest question.

google translate doesnt always convey the message properly

My Russian reading skills are basic at best, but first two replies were translated very well. No google translate shenaningans here. Unless someone wants to split straws US-lawyer-style, you won't get any better translation than this, especially with such answers that are short and straight to the point.

Here is another human translation:

Q: As I understand, there will be no F/A-18 this year?

A: No. It's another year's worth of work at least.

Q: And is the plan to release DCS 2.5 in 2016 still in force?

A: No. 2.5 will not be released this year. There will be a large update to Nevada and early access to Normandy.

Q: I remember at the end of last year there was a developer post saying that 2016 will be «the year of aircraft carriers». It's almost November. Did this conception change? :)

A: It did. Aircraft carriers are postponed for now.

You forget one thing...

Good point, I'll ask for a proper one.

They never said full products will be released this year. They only mentioned that there is a good chance Alpha will be available in 2016. I think we are still getting F-18 and 2.5 this year.

I am right, this would also set a scene for Hornet expectations - end of 2017 at the earliest.

Well here's to hopng, just seems it would of been easier to state that upfront rather then leaving it open for interpretation.

At this point the whole ordeal just seems a bit bizarre. Oh well

There are Many things in 2.5 other than maps though.

"A little update... today the Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5 had its terrain elevation resolution increased by an average of 400%. This has eliminated almost all sharp edges to the terrain; and it's added rolling hills, much more detailed ridges and mountain sides, and provided many new places to hide down low.

I'll try to post some images in the coming weeks.

Yes, this is still a FREE upgrade planned for later this year.

Thanks"

"Perhaps our biggest focus is on the huge DCS World 2.5 Update that will unify DCS World 1.5 and 2.0. Not only will the DCS World 2.5 be one version to rule them all, it will also include a vastly improved Caucasus map. Features of the new map will include improved and higher resolution textures and elevation mesh, improved trees, higher density of ground objects, improved lighting and shadowing, terrain projected shadows, procedural grass, and other improvements. Best of all, this will be our free gift to you.

DCS World 2.5 is still on track to be available in 2016."

"We expect to release the updated Caucuses map for DCS World 2.5, the final version of the NTTR map, and the Normandy map this year."

2.5 always went hand in hand with the maps being releases this year.............................

In all of this "hype train derailment", we can rest assured that ED never takes any shortcuts in terms of quality for their releases. They always seem to go the extra mile and it shows when stuff finally gets released - and we'll be happier for it. Waiting just sucks for all of us...

Well, that's really disappointing.

I have absolutly no problems with delays, but what really disappoints me is the communication. In August it was said, that a release this year is possible. Now, just two months later, we're talking about at least another year of work. How does that happen?

The worst thing about it is how we learn about this, by a small forum post in the russian forum that answers a question that was asked there. No word about this in the english forum. And it happened on the same day a newsletter was released where nothing like that was mentioned.

Delays are fine, it's software development after all, but pls tell us all, if there is such a huge change regarding development and release plans and not just a portion of the community. And pls don't wait with that to the very last moment.

I posted this in the Hornet thread as well:

Just as a note on all this, be sure not to read too much into these quotes. Most of the time these are discussions on final feature complete releases and not necessarily early access. Dont get all stressed out over nothing just yet.
