Ever since Flaming Cliffs 2, the Crimea map has been gone! I was quite fond of that map. I know a lot of people thought it was boring, but I quite liked it. :( How come it was removed? Surely it's not a design limitation, is it? I'd be surprised if it was. All the assets were already there. Even the terrain is still shaped correctly.

Anyone care to enlighten me? I'd love to see it return someday. It was a very nice map.

That goes back a ways. I think two of the driving forces were:

1. Terrain limitations at the time meant only so many objects in the world. To add objects meant something had to get cut.

2. The map from FC2 was first found in Black Shark, so perhaps ED thought the extended area of western Georgia and more eastward into Russia would be more interesting for that aircraft.

The map was extended a few years later with A-10C to the east possibly due to a forced 64 bit executable to remove ram limitations. The expansion east made sense due to the nature of the area, recent history and to include more of Georgia. Plus it is visually more interesting than Crimea.

I do miss the Crimea on the map, even before it became relevant to reality, but it is mostly in the sense of using Crimea as a spawn location for missions to go into Russia across the Kerch Strait. Though there were a few interesting points of interest there that could be useful for missions. Only ED knows if the map will ever receive an extension again.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

I'm also for this, I think it adds more completeness to the map, it will also increase the relevancy and future-proof so it doesn't fall off the radar completely in people's minds

It would be nice to see the shallows textured nicely, all those sandy beaches, I mean, why not even some sorrounding ukraine, or else it would feel "cut-off"

Flying under the Kerch Bridge where the ships suppose to pass would be nice too!

With the new jets, Mirage2000 and AJS-37, the upcoming F-14 and F-18, it makes a lot of sense to make the map larger and crimea is a good choice.

The Viggen right now could use it for naval attack operations.

And we were using this map since decades, bigger maps always brings new posibilities.

People have asked for this a few times, especially since learning about the 2.5 version of Caucasus, from what I remember ED's response was "not planned".

Personally, while I would like it, I'd actually rather see the map expand south a tad and expose some more land around the southern edge of the Black Sea. That'll be fun when we've got the F-14, F/A-18, Su-33 with PFM and new carriers :)

Well, just look at those shallows, maybe I'm just an earth-buff, but I think it looks kinda unique for the region.

With the new terrain engine maybe these things could be replicated in some fashion.

And I started looking up airfields, for my own enjoyment and adventure if nothing more.

EDIT: Well there are other real life events over there like the USS Donald Cook incident and the Bastion system was deployed on the coast, for example. But I'm not sure if Bastion will be in the game anytime soon.

But it can still be as a base for imaginary scenarios because of some activity, compared to areas with zero.

I hope I got them all, at least in Crimea, added a few on the edges, that areas should also have textured/modelled a few km inside for shores to give the sense of reality, otherwise if you fly around crimea it would always look bland and crappy toward ukraine, and you don't want to see that texture-cutoff right in the middle of the shallows, so optimally the landscape should span into ukraine somewhat, and a few extra on the west side just enough there for that major Kherson Airport.

And here's a draft of my optimal textured and supported area.

I agree...flying the Mig-29s I can cover Batumi to Anapa in little time.

If ED keeps this endless addition of new in-house and 3rd party aircraft coming, (and in unfinished, alpha/beta condition) there won't be a millisecond of time left to work on anything but aircraft. I'd love to see them start focusing on a few things and finishing them, rather than the endless addition of aircraft. Maybe I'm one of the only ones that feels this way.

Aircraft modules would not impact things like the game core or terrain.

I'm interested in hearing how that is possible?

I think he just means that aircraft development is occurring separate from Game/Terrain development and that the pace of one doesn't slow down the other.

Maybe an argument could be made RE resource allocation; but I know nothing about software development so I wouldn't want to venture an opinion there. Could be completely different skill sets?

That said, I'm rather anxious for 2.5, and my A/C stable is rapidly rounding out to a point where I'd MUCH rather spend my money on new maps.

I wonder if this might be on the horizon after 2.5 is all settled and integrated.

Though I suspect the priority would be more on the Straits of Hormuz map than an expansion to Caucasus.

There is no expansion to the Caucasus map planned, only upgrading it to use more of the new tech for maps.

Everything is subject to change! :D

This is true, but they may want to continue exploring other parts of the world :)

it s a shame. . . with ww2 and normandy. . . hormuz and nevada. . . it went in a totally wrong direction. it is a waste of (very limited) ressources.

we need a cold war scenario and a present.

nothing more.

but that is -for sure- only my opinion. . .

i love ED! and really looking forward to caucasus 2.5.

hopefully with updated and newly if possible from the scratch modelled aerodromes. . .

You will be surprised how much fun the Normandy Map is with modern equipment...

dont get me wrong, the area is cool. viva la france! :-)

but i think i will have no fun dropping bombs on spitfires parking on the green grass or chasing them back to the past. ;-) not my cup of tea.

my dream is a cold war scenario around 1986. . . warsaw pact against nato. with areas of gdr, western germany, parts of poland and parts of france.

this would be the most interesting battle place for all of us i guess. . . meaning the best compromise of areas, conflicts and eras.
