Preorder is up, time to get rid of my SLI 980s.

The thing about waiting is.. it's a never ending cycle. Wait for the 1080 TI, but Volta is right around the corner... but then the Volta TIs are right around the corner.. and the cycle goes on and on.

I have a 1080 SLI system and a Titan XP system, both 6850 Broadwell E platforms. Since SLI + VR/Rift doesn't really work, it's essentially 1080 vs Titan XP. I notice quite a bit better performance over the 1080 with the Titan in VR, and since the 1080ti will likely perform very similarly to the Titan XP in games, I think it's worth it to upgrade if VR/DCS is your thing.

Primary DCS System: AMD 9800x3d, MSI Tomahawk 870, 6TB m.2s (2x2t, 1x2tb), MSI Ventus 5080, Seasonic 1200 PSU, 64GB Gskill 6000mhz CL30.  32" Asus 4K OLED 240hz, 49"MSI OLDED

Secondary System : 14600KF, z790 Tomahawk, 32GB Gskill 6000mhz CL32, Asus 4090, 2x2TB m.2.  VR: Quest 3 for now.

Well I have an EVGA 1080 FTW that runs great for me, I just cannot fathom the Ti being able to give enough of a performance boost over it, to justify the additional expense - especially after having just bought this card just 7 months ago... so I am going to hold out for next gen I think.

Agreed about waiting, for the most part. However, buying a founders edition is just plain silly when there will be better cards for the same, or less, money in a fairly short amount of time.

The only reason to buy a founders edition card is if you plan to water cool. I'm actually considering it!

So for the sceptics, seems like the marketing was close enough.

1080Ti vs. 1080: 32% up in 4K

1080Ti vs. 980Ti: 74% up in 4K

http://www.anandtech.com/show/11180/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-review/17

This will be an important performance increase for VR (both this gen and next) assuming DCS can utilize it in 2.5. Assuming next gen VR is here within one year from now this will more or less be the best card we will have. Maybe the "1180" will release Q1 2018 but I don't expect it to beat the 1080Ti by that much.

Posted (edited)

The release of next-gen Nvidia Volta GPUs is planned for q1 2018. I see no reason to upgrade right now from 980ti. Will wait for 2080ti or whatever it's going to be to hit shelves by the end of 2018. And maybe next gen VR around the same time. DCS should have better optimization by then so I see the end of 2018 as a sweet spot for upgrades instead of having a rat race every year for the best and fastest

Not silly at all, depending on what you plan to do with it (EVGA Hybrid cooler for example). In fact, even keeping it on air there is nothing silly about this generation of FE cards, in the past you used to pay a premium, they didn't do that this time.

Of course no one knows when next gen VR will hit the market, but I would be very surprised if we don't see it latest Q1 2018. Then it will be around two years since gen 1 was released. We have also already seen a substantial price cut for the Oculus Rift which may very well be a planned half cycle price drop.

Well the performance increase from my 980ti to 1080ti is definitly worth it. Next card will be later or have a minimum on performance on the 1080ti. But that is my opinion.

It just depends what point in a cycle you upgrade. I've gone from a 780ti to 980ti and will now get a 1080ti. When Volta ti releases I will get that. Just upgrading at the last step of a cycle instead of the first. It makes little difference which point you upgrade in the long run.

Be interesting to see how this runs with DCS.

DCS is never included in benchmarks so down to someone in the community to do it.

Who's going to be the first to compare the 1080 and 1080TI with DCS then? :D

Don, your performance gain is too little for the money. 17% or so. Look i come from a 980TI so for me is it between 30 or 40% gain. That's the difference. :D

After days of checking I just got all excited to finally see a 1080ti tab on overclockers U.K. Clicked it and discovered the only product is a mug! Is that a sign? Lol
