Hi all! I haven't been in the loop about DCS. From searching the forums, it seems that there is a general consensus that the mig 21 is "still in beta" or is unfinished. What exactly is unfinished? I quite like the mig-21 and want to buy it

It is a good module and was even better a year ago. Once M3 gets the bugs worked out I think it will go back to being one of the very best DCS modules.

If you want an objective survey of what early-release means, just browse the bug sub-forum. Note that you may or may not experience the same bugs as other users.

There are some stuff like the ASP being worked on and flight model tweaks. It is a a bit of a lottery with the MiG21bis depending on the patch released. Stuff breaks and stuff get fixed. It is still a very good module that is "alive" with a great feeling of flight. It is often a bit heavier in the performance department than other modules, so beware if your computer is not up to date.

Other than that, the MiG21bis is really cool rocket and you won't find a better sim of that fighter. I never was much of a flight sim enthusiast. The Huey and F86F Sabre was gateway drugs, and the MiG21bis got me obsessed with DCS and fighter jets =)

The Mig21 is a great module. One of the best IMO. Very hands on for a Mach2+ fighter jet, and very fascinating to learn to operate and fly. Scary fast on landing :) A lot of fun in multiplayer too, as it is a good matchup against the F5.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

Thanks guys for all the input

Well 350kmh landings are always scary:no_sad:

While there are some bugs and some of them sure are rather annoying, the module in whole is definitely working and it's a great module.

I bought the Mig 21 in the recent Fatherland sale. Since then I can not put it in the hangar! Its totally addictive and flies well in both maps.

There are over 100 switches in the cockpit, at first they look daunting, but are a satisfying challenge to learn. In fact, once you can fly circuits and navigate PRMG/RSBN, or NDB, you then must learn all the radar modes and weapon systems. These are all very challenging. Fortunately xxjohn'sxx videos are a good starting point. The manual is superb and has excellent illustrations, with high definition annotated cockpit photos available in the simulation folder.

The lack of look down radar is another challenge, but with the GCI radar units strategically placed, you get to fly it the way it was intended....with GCI, giving B.R.A. There is more satisfaction in prosecuting a successful attack, in this aircraft, then any other...in my humble opinion.

The addictive nature becomes so engrossing that recently I stalled my car at some traffic lights and started to reach on my left panel, for the "in flight engine start circuit breaker"!! :joystick:

A great simulation.:D

Regards

David

Thank you guys - means a lot to us.

Note that we recently dedicated significant time to further improve the module. We are working on it each day for some time. We hope a patch will be released soon.

Power through superb knowledge, training and teamwork.

Buy it! I love flying the MiG-21. She's a great bird. Took me a bit, but I finally have the landings down pretty good.

Couple the MiG-21 with Capt Zeen's Helio's profile and a second touchscreen monitor, and WooHoo!

I have all the modules, but only fly the Huey and Fishbed.

In VR the mig is outstanding. It also feels like a real plane (it has inertia). I would rate it as the best module available!!!

It is a great module... as some already noted, there some quircks about it, but overall it's a must ... I really look forward to its progress in development/fixes.

Mig21 is a great module, i havent noticed any issues in 1.5 or 2.0. I will caution you though, the module itself is extremely well done, but because of this, you really get a feel for how awful the MiG21 is. Systems randomly fail, the engine is very tempermental, sometimes the radar doesnt work, landing slightly rough will break stuff, etc. The plane is touted as the AK47 of planes, but it is not very reliable, and overly complicated. You really have to know what you are doing to get the most out of it, so expect to spend quite some time learning. Its not like the F5 where you can basically just jump in and go.

It's fun to fly, but expect there to be problems with the plane, not the module. Aside from its quirks and complexity, the module feels great flying. One of the best cockpit modeling ive seen, especially the lighting. I got it in the fatherland sale and have really enjoyed it.

I'm less than enthousiastic about the module, since quite a lot of stuff is either missing, broken or erroneously moddeled.

I posted a list about this a couple of weeks ago:

- RSBN/PRMG/ARC

- Clock

- Weapons Selector

- ASP

- Flight Model

- External sounds

- Afterburner sync

- SAU

- Radar that does monopulse instead of Doppler

- Radar that respects RCS and doesn't immediately recognize full AC, regardless of RCS, when the AC gets into maximum detection zone of RP-22

I would avoid this module until it is actually finished. Which is a shame, considering the love I have for the real-life MiG-21.

Issues Vincent posted are not fantasy, they exist. Although I don't share he's opinion about the Mig being in such a bad state. The aircraft is the most real feel flying AC in the sim and its a joy to fly and master. Good thing is that M3 are in deep bug fixing atm so expect the most of them polished soon.

Could you elaborate a little more on some of those issues? Specifically the flight model and weapons selector? What about them needs to be corrected?

The FM is quite odd for a delta atm, the aircraft stalling at an abnormally low AoA, lower than the F-86 & MiG-15, which is very much at odds with the real bird.

It's an odd thing because it wasn't like this a few patches ago, back then the FM seemed much more believable in terms of the AoA range.

Damn, where do I even begin? :D

Landing speeds, roll rates, behavior on AoA, sudden mayhem flight departures, the faults in the FM are quite diverse and extreme. I would suggest to read through the flight envelope as documented here and try and recreate it in DCS:

http://www.avialogs.com/en/aircraft/ussr/mikoyangurevitch/mig-21/mig-21bis-pilot-s-flight-operating-instructions.html

They nailed the FM last summer, but for some reason it has gone totally on the fritz.

Weapons selector:

The current implementation is that for you have to manually set the weapons selector knob to the pylon that you want to use.

In the real plane, the weapons selector knob is only there to choose the first pylon. After that it uses an automatic sequence, so there is no need to touch the knob during combat.

Thanks for the info. I did find it odd that after firing a missile, the pilot would have to physically turn the selector to the next pylon. I chalked it up to Russian engineering. Interesting points about the flight model as well.

Obviously I've never flown a MiG21, so its hard to know what isn't modeled correctly. I hope these issues are addressed, would make the MiG21 a lot more effective in combat.

Yes excellent module... Just a little remark ... Why can't we have three joystick binds, one for taxi Light, one for landing light and one for light off. In mig21 it's a three state switch and actually bind is limited to a cycle push button !

Hope that can be done one day

To me the whole point of the clickable cockpit is that it is not all on the HOTAS. The Mig-21 pilot has to remove his hand from the throttle or stick to adjust the landing/taxi lights.:)

Yeah but in DCS one has to release the stick in order to grab the mouse and switch off the landing lights. The real MiG pilot just had to release the throttle, thus keeping his right hand on the stick and keeping control over the aircraft :D I don't see a problem in having a cycle push button though - I wouldn't like to assign three different HOTAS switches only for adjusting the lights.

With the Captain Zeen Helios profile and touchscreen, loving it. the MiG-21 is truly clickable cockpit heaven. You want switches, it's got switches...
